It's looking more and more likely that the United States soon could face its first tropical threat in the young 2019 hurricane season. On Sunday, the National Hurricane Center increased the chance to 50% that a system could develop in the Gulf by the middle of the week. Depending on your computer model of choice, the ensuing system could pose trouble -- or worse -- from the Florida panhandle to southern Louisiana. While it's still too early to tell if this system will get strong enough to be named (that would be Barry, by the way), more interesting is "how" this could all come about. For the most part, meteorologists vigilantly scan the Gulf or Atlantic Ocean from June to November for signs that low pressure systems are developing with the potential to strengthen.Turns out that average date of 814

In recent years, scientists have noticed an increased frequency of tornadoes in the Southeast, carving a deadly path in what's called Dixie Alley. While Tornado Alley in the Great Plains still leads in the number of tornadoes, more are appearing in the South. And tornadoes shifting to this region can take a devastating toll. On Sunday, an EF-4 tornado ripped through Alabama's Lee County killing 23 people and cutting a path of destruction at least 24 miles long. It's not an anomaly that tornadoes appear in the Southeast every year, but they present different vulnerabilities, said Victor Gensini, professor of meteorology at Northern Illinois University."As you move east from Kansas to Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, the population density increases rapidly and we also have an issue in the Southeast of more mobile homes," he said. "If you get hit in a mobile home from a tornado, you're much more likely to be killed. You just have a really unique exposure and vulnerability problem."Gensini was co-author on a study that started tracking tornadoes in 1979 and they observed a shift towards the Southeast around 2008.Dixie Alley includes portions of East Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. Tornado Alley includes the area from central Texas stretching north to Iowa, and from central Kansas and Nebraska east to western Ohio, according to the 1401

In a feat of engineering, human will and blatant disregard of speed limits, three men claim that they broke the record for the "Cannonball Run," a cross-country drive from New York to Los Angeles.Arne Toman, Douglas Tabbutt and Berkeley Chadwick say they started their drive on November 11 at 12:57 a.m. at the Red Ball Garage in Manhattan and ended at the Portofino hotel in Redondo Beach in 27 hours and 25 minutes, beating the previous record of 28 hours and 50 minutes."Holding the 'Cannonball' record is a lifelong dream of mine," Toman, one of the drivers, told CNN. "I have no intentions of trying to do it again. We had perfect weather, traffic, no construction, etc. I don't think you could recreate that or the good luck we had without having police interactions."Road & Track first reported the accomplishment in the unofficial and illicit event. The trio claims their average speed was 103 miles per hour, and the highest was 193.They drove in a "heavily prepared" Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. Upgrades to the exhaust and the engine's two turbochargers produced more than 800 horsepower, a press release said.It took "every navigational aid and police counter-measure known to man" and almost 20 different scouts to avoid police interference, they said. Technology included Waze, radar detectors, a CB radio, binoculars and an airplane detection system. They had no interactions with police during the drive, Toman said.Ed Bolian, who was 1460
