In an effort to limit COVID-19 exposure and new transmissions, authorities in China are ordering food importers to avoid frozen food “from areas with severe epidemics.”The country’s Foreign Trade Operations Office released a statement Monday citing cluster infections that continue to occur from frozen food items that test positive for the coronavirus. The statement does not list specific countries, and asks companies to stay up-to-date on “key epidemic areas.”In August, a city in China warned food importers that a “surface sample of frozen chicken wings” from Brazil tested positive for the coronavirus.In June, Chinese authorities said they found heavy traces of coronavirus in meat and seafood areas of a large wholesale food market in Beijing, after an outbreak of new cases.Earlier this month, China said it would suspend imports from companies overseas if their frozen foods test positive for coronavirus. Media outlets report China has already taken steps to ban imports from some meat processing plants.Their release on Monday puts responsibility on food importers in China to “establish and improve the early warning and reporting mechanism for preventing the import” of the coronavirus.The CDC and the World Health Organization say the chances of catching the coronavirus from food is low.“Currently, there is no evidence to suggest that handling food or consuming food is associated with COVID-19,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states on their website.However, they continue by stating it is possible a person could touch a surface that has the virus on it and then touch their mouth or nose, potentially spreading the virus.The CDC recommends safe food practices like washing hands after touching food packaging and food products, and cooking meat thoroughly. 1802

Hurricane Maria was upgraded to a Category 5 hurricane on Monday, with top sustained winds of 160 MPH. As the hurricane continues to churn in the Atlantic Ocean, it is expected to strike Puerto Rico on Wednesday. The hurricane could prove to be a disastrous blow to more than 3 million Americans in Puerto Rico. Because of the threat posed to the US territory, Puerto Rico was placed under a hurricane warning by the National Hurricane Center.Earlier on Monday, forecasters predicted Maria's rapid intensification. "Significant strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Maria is expected to become a dangerous major hurricane before it moves through the Leeward Islands," according to the National Hurricane Center's latest update.  Maria has prompted a hurricane warning for Martinique, Guadeloupe, Dominica, St. Kitts, Nevis and Montserrat. As of early Monday evening, the storm was passing over Dominica. Torrential rainfall could cause deadly flash flooding and mudslides on islands that it crosses. Maria could dump 6 to 12 inches of rain across the Leeward Islands -- including Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands -- through Wednesday night."We want to alert the people of Puerto Rico that this is not an event like we've ever seen before," Gov. Ricardo Rosselló told reporters Monday.And for the first time in 85 years, Puerto Rico is expected to suffer a direct landfall from a Category 4 or 5 hurricane. In a survey of 1,000 small business owners conducted by the US Chamber of Commerce, 57% ranked the economy as the first or second most important issue influencing their vote in the 2020 Election. With 30.2 million small businesses in the US, according to 2018 US figures, these voters make up a significant chunk of the electorate. “Small businesses provide so much to our economy,” Pete Mikulin, CEO of 3R Technology Solutions said. The company focuses on electronics recycling and data destruction.“We’re fortunate in that we’re OK. We’re just OK,” he said. The pandemic hit businesses hard like Mikulin's hard. “It wouldn’t take much right now to ruin, completely destroy the small business landscape.”Many are not sure what the future holds.“Your plans go out the window,” Mikulin said. “So you deal with it everyday, day by day, and it’s survival.”“It feels like we’re alone. It feels like there's no one in our corner as a small business owner,” he added.“There’s concern of the small businesses that not enough attention is being paid to them in Washington, that Washington is looking at some of the bigger items in the election and they’re forgetting about the fact that small businesses is the major driver of our economy,” Mac Clouse, business expert for over 40 years and professor at University of Denver, said.“The stock market is a general indicator of what's going on with stock prices, and stock prices are usually reflective of your larger firms, firms that are publicly traded,” he said. “That really doesn't measure what's happening with the mom and pop businesses, the small businesses.
