CHONGQING, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Rain-triggered landslides in southwest China Monday blocked a river, creating a barrier lake in Chongqing Municipality and forcing the evacuation of more than 12,000 people, flood control authorities said.The landslide blocked the Luojiang River in Chengkou County early Monday, creating a dam holding 15 to 20 million cubic meters of water, said Xing Hua, a Chengkou Water Resources Bureau spokesman.As of 5 a.m. Monday, the barrier lake was five-square-kilometers in area and 18-meters deep, said Xing.Photo taken on July 19, 2010 shows the Ciqikou Town surrounded by flood water of the Jialingjiang River, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality. BEIJING, July 6 (Xinhua) -- China has sent 15,603 soldiers to participate in 18 United Nations peacekeeping missions since 1990, an official of China's Ministry of National Defense said Tuesday.Of the total, nine soldiers died while on the missions, said Tao Xiangyang.As of the end of June 2010, there were still 1,960 soldiers deployed in UN peacekeeping missions in nine mission areas or working in the UN peacekeeping department, Tao said.Also on Tuesday, a group of 38 foreign military attaches to China, who were from 36 countries, visited a training center for peacekeeping soldiers in Huairou District, suburban Beijing.

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Wuhan Iron and Steel Company Ltd., the listed subsidiary of China's third largest steel maker, said Sunday that its net profit rose 90.43 percent year on year to 963.53 million yuan (141.7 million U.S. dollars) during the first half of the year as strong economic growth boosted steel demand and prices.The company's first-half-year sales reached 34.36 billion yuan, up 50.72 percent from one year earlier, it said in a statement delivered to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.However, costs also climbed in the first six months compared with a year earlier because of increases in raw material prices, it said.Production costs for steel products gained 47.12 percent year on year to 31.18 billion yuan.
