BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of people gathered at the Tian'anmen Square in central Beijing early Sunday morning to watch a national flag hoisted to full height and then lowered to half-mast, mourning victims of a massive mudslide in northwest China's Zhouqu County one week ago.A flag at half-mast is also seen at Xinhuamen, the main entrance of Zhongnanhai, the headquarters of the Communist Party of China and the central government, as part of the one-day national mourning.The State Council announced Saturday that Chinese flags across the country and at overseas embassies and consulates would be lowered to half-mast Sunday to mourn the victims of the devastating mudslide.Public entertainment will be suspended Sunday in a show of mourning, said the announcement by the State Council, China's cabinet.The mudslide hit Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in southern Gansu Province, on Aug. 8, leaving 1,239 people dead and 505 missing.Soon after Sunday midnight, front pages of Chinese websites turned to black and white, in a show of mourning.Public recreational activities, such as movies, karaoke, and on-line entertainment including games and music are set to be suspended Sunday, according to an urgent circular issued by the Ministry of Culture.Mourning ceremonies will also be held Sunday in Zhouqu County and Lanzhou, capital city of Gansu. A silent tribute will be observed at 10 a.m..Sunday is the seventh day since the mudslide occurred and, according to some Chinese traditions, the seventh day after a death marks the height of the mourning period.Large-scale national displays of mourning are rare in China.China observed a three-day national mourning period after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, and a one-day national mourning after the Yushu quake on April 14 this year.On both occasions, the national flag was lowered to half-mast and all public entertainment was suspended.

He spoke of Zimbabwe's defence forces as a "good friend and partner" of People's Liberation Army (PLA).Since the establishment of China-Zimbabwe diplomatic ties 30 years ago, cooperation between the two nations had continuously deepened in the areas of politics, economics and trade, culture, education and health, Liang said.China expressed appreciation for Zimbabwe's firm adherence to the one-China policy and its support to China's peaceful reunification, said Liang. He also thanked Zimbabwe for support on issues concerning China's core and major interests.Chiwenga expressed appreciation for China's long-standing support to Zimbabwe in various areas. BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Health reported 1,397 deaths from infectious diseases on the mainland in July.Some 750,000 infections were registered last month, including 10 cholera infections, according to a statement released Tuesday by the ministry.No plague cases or deaths from cholera were reported in July, the statement said.Plague and cholera are categorized as Class A infectious diseases -- the most serious class under China's Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases.More than 350,000 cases of Class B diseases were also reported in the month, with 1,251 of them resulting in death.Tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, dysentery, syphilis and gonorrhea were among the five most frequently reported cases in the month, accounting for 94 percent of all Class B cases, the statement said.The death toll due to Class C disease was 146. The top three Class C diseases were hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD), infectious diarrhea and mumps, which accounted for over 98 percent of cases in this category, the statement said.

BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- China's trade surplus would likely fall noticeably this year as exports outlook would not be optimistic while imports would remain robust, Ministry of Commerce spokesman Yao Jian said at a briefing Saturday.Exports growth would slow after July, Yao forecast, adding the surge in exports in May was due to a low comparison basis last year. China's exports in May surged 48.5 percent year on year, customs data released Thursday.China's trade surplus in the first five months fell 59.9 percent to 35.39 billion U.S. dollars. The figure in 2009 topped 196.07 billion U.S. dollars, down 34.2 percent year on year.Yao attributed the weak export outlook to the European sovereign debt crisis, rising commodity prices and labor costs."In the following months, the fallout from the debt crisis in Europe would gradually become apparent, and China would closely watch changes in its important exports markets including Germany, Spain and Italy," Yao said.China would maintain stable trade policies amid the crisis, and might adjust some policies in some specific industries for environmental protection purposes."Stable trade policies are a top priority when the external outlook is not clear," he said.Yao also told reporters that attempts by some U.S. lawmakers to include China's exchange rate policy into trade investigations on China's exports of aluminum extrusions and coated paper lacked factual support and did not conform to rules of the World Trade Organization.The WTO regulated trade policies instead of a country's overall financial or foreign exchange policies, he said.
