Experts say the United States is going through a maternity and child health crisis.“We know that every 12 hours, around the clock, a mother dies as a consequence of childbirth, and if you are a Black woman, those numbers are three-fold higher,” said Dr. Rahul Gupta, Chief Medical and Health Officer at the March of Dimes. “If you're an American Alaskan woman, its two and a half times higher.”The March of Dimes is highlighting the areas of the country that are considered maternity care deserts, meaning places where there are no hospitals providing obstetric care.They say a third of counties are affected and it’s not just a rural American problem. It’s urban counties too.Dr. Rahul Gupta touched on some of the consequences, such as mothers dying unnecessarily, 22,000 infants dying before their first birthday, and the pre-term birth rate rising for a fifth year in a row.The numbers and problems are amplified in maternity care deserts, which have a higher poverty rate and lower household income. That’s something that's escalated during the pandemic.“The COVID-19 pandemic has unveiled the underlying challenges as well as ugliness within our systems of care as well as communities in terms of institutional racism and bias as well as the socioeconomic conditions that lead to some of these outcomes,” said Gupta.A report touches on many different policy-based solutions that could improve access to maternity care, including expanding access to Medicaid for new moms from 60 days to 1 year after childbirth, allowing better access to midwives, reimbursement for doula care, and expansion of telehealth services. 1629

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - A 13-year-old boy suffered burns to his face after a science experiment at Capri Elementary School in Encinitas went awry.Priest Rivera, a 6th-grade student, said a teacher was attempting to show a group of students an experiment known as the “black snake” or “carbon snake” when it exploded in his face.The experiment involves mixing sugar and baking soda with a flammable liquid and lighting it on fire to create a snake-like reaction.Rivera said the teacher told them to stand in a semi-circle around her on the field as she lit the experiment on fire.“The teacher kept on pouring more rubbing alcohol onto the flame itself because the flame wasn’t building up,” said Rivera.That’s about all he remembers before waking up in an ambulance with a sharp pain all over his face.“My face was constantly burning and burning,” he said. “I still feel it right now.”He spent six days in the hospital and underwent four surgeries, according to his mom Gina Rivera.“It was just hell,” she said about the experience. “He kept saying, ‘mom am I going to go blind?’”Priest kept his eyesight but two weeks after the accident, still had bandages around his face to protect the burn areas.Gina said it’s still unclear how bad the injuries will end up being though she said the effects will be long-lasting. “It has halted his life. It’s changed his life,” she said.The outgoing superintendent of the Encinitas Union School District, Timothy Baird, told 10News they could not comment on any specifics because the incident involved a student. Ever since their older brother competed in the Scripps National Spelling Bee years ago, twin brothers Garrett and Pierce Bryner have dreamed of making it to the bee — together.This year, they’ll see that dream become reality. “It’s kind of historical, I guess you’d say,” said Garrett, who made it to the national bee — without his brother — last year.Previously, twins would never have been able to make it to the bee together, as one would have always beaten the other out. But thanks to new qualifying rules put in place this year which incorporate a point system, two sets of twins are now going to be on the national stage for the first time in the spelling bee's 91-year history: the Bryner twins, and another set of twins from Mississippi.Garrett’s brother Pierce will become the third sibling in the Bryner family to attend the bee.Their mom, Liz Bryner, who has shepherded her kids through her share of bees, says that while the two will be nervous, for the parents, its on a whole other level.“I think nothing compared to the Bee in terms of the stress level,” Liz said from her home in Utah. “If you look around at the parents they’re often more nervous than the kids. I think it’s really a nail-biting experience.”Garret and Pierce say they can be competitive when it comes to studying. "Sometimes the other one jumps in tries to spell the word before the other one,” Pierce said. Ultimately they hope for the best for each other.“I just cheer him on,” Pierce said.They’ve been studying as much as they can, Liz said, but as eighth grade boys, surrounded by the rugged landscape of Utah, their attention span only lasts so long before they want to get back outside and hop on their bikes.“I don’t think we’ve ever gone longer than probably 90 minutes at a time,” she said. “That’s about as long as anyone’s been willing to do.”“To know that they can both understand what it’s like to be there at the national bee to compete, and it’ll be something they share,” she said. “The fact that they can share this experience is just incredible as a mom.”ESPN, which broadcasts the bee, has seen viewership numbers for the annual contest that have hovered around one million people.
