LA JOLLA (KGTV): Researchers at the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center and the La Jolla Institute of Allergy and Immunology have teamed up to find a new way to fight cancer. They've created a vaccine that can help teach the immune system how to attack only cancer cells and leave the rest of the body alone."Patients will be able to tolerate their therapy much better than they have so far on conventional approaches," says Dr. Stephen Schoenberger from the La Jolla Institute. Each vaccine is highly personalized to the patient. According to a release from UC San Diego, the vaccines "defines the neoantigens – foreign protein fragments recognized by the immune system – in a patient’s cancer. With neoantigens identified, the team can identify peptides – strings of amino acids – that can be used to create a vaccine to stimulate a protective immune system response."Simply put, the new vaccine takes information from a patient's immune system and the tumor and uses it to help white blood cells to fight it."We're giving them life and giving them hope," says Dr. Schoenberger. The first patient in the clinical trial is Tamara Strauss. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2015 and went through chemotherapy and surgery."It was brutal," says Strauss. "It's been three and a half years of hell."Strauss' parents helped fund the clinical trial with a million donation. She says she feels fortunate they could do that, but also hopeful that it helps others down the road."I really pray that this vaccine and personalized form of treatment really does change the paradigm of cancer treatment," says Strauss.During the trial, ten patients will get three doses of the vaccine. They'll also be on Keytruda, an immune system boosting drug for up to two years. Their health will be monitored for five years to determine the vaccine's effectiveness. 1871

Katherine Johnson, the woman who hand-calculated the trajectory for America's first trip to space, turns 100 today. Before the arrival of electronic data processors, aka, computers in the 1960s, humans -- mainly women -- comprised the workforce at NASA known as the "Computer Pool."Black women, especially, played a crucial role in the pool, providing mathematical data for NASA's first successful space missions, including Alan Shepherd's 1961 mission and John Glenn's pioneering orbital spaceflight.Principal among them was Johnson. But her work -- and that of the "Computer Pool" -- barely earned a mention in pop culture space tributes. That changed, thanks to "Hidden Figures," a best-selling novel later turned into an Oscar-nominated movie. 753

KEARNY, N.J. — An uninvited guest made its way into several New Jersey suburbs, creating quite a stir inside normally quiet areas.Police believe a 300-pound bear is roaming around communities and was most recently seen in North Arlington. It was likely the same bear that was spotted in Kearny. It's not clear how a black bear ended up in the middle of densely populated areas like Kearny — and Harrison, beforehand — but some New Jersey residents needed a second to get their bearings after spotting the furry animal."I haven't seen any here, this is the first time. Surprised me. Especially close to my house," said Ruben Martinez. He barely noticed that it had climbed up a tree in his own backyard around 1 p.m. Monday. That was until he heard some commotion outside."When I went outside, that's when I found out. I saw police in my driveway, that's how I found out. Plus, I see a lot of people outside," Martinez said.Harrison police said the bear was first spotted on Saturday at the local Walmart and by Red Bull Arena. Officers snapped a picture with their bare hands and posted it on social media, warning people to be on alert."We did get a call from the town of Kearny that there was a bear was in the neighborhood and police were looking for it,” said Herbert Ginbel, a local resident.Police asked residents to bear with them as they tried to capture the animal. They've requested an animal control unit and notified the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife."I just hope everything will work out all right, and as a deacon I pray that the bear will be ok, and it can be returned to the habitat that I belongs,” Ginbel said. It's estimated the bear weighs 300 pounds. Ironically today marked the beginning of bear hunting season in New Jersey, though the governor said 2020 would mark the end of bear hunting under his administration. This story originally reported by Cristian Benavides and Rebecca Solomon on pix11.com. 1941

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City, Missouri Health Department is speaking out after it poured bleach on food intended to be given to homeless people.Nellie McCool, who helps run Free Hot Soup Kansas City, has been helping the homeless for years until Sunday."Officers and health inspectors demanded we destroy our food and we were violating health code violations by sharing meals with our friends," said McCool. The department said the group wasn't following the law about serving the homeless."They were notified back in a meeting in September that they needed to get a permit and they just outright said they refused to do that," said Dr. Rex Archer, director of health for KCMO.But McCool said she never heard from the department."That is incorrect," McCool said. "We never had any kind of government official ever come and speak with anybody at any of the public parks."According to the health department, the permit is free and all organizations that want to serve food to homeless people (or anyone) needs this permit. Archer said the food was also not being handled correctly and could put others at risk."Preparing food in all these individuals homes when people haven't been trained, prepare food safely. Then, they are taking it and transporting it in trunks of cars when its cool. It's supposed to be warm food but they have no insulation or a way to keep the food warm," Archer said. 1424

JetBlue says it plans to increase the number of seats it will fill on planes starting in December. That makes JetBlue the latest airline to retreat from blocking middle seats to give passengers more space because of the pandemic. A JetBlue spokesman said Thursday that the airline still plans to limit seating through the holidays but hasn't decided how many seats to leave empty. A statement on their website reads: "JetBlue is currently blocking the vast majority of middle seats on larger planes (and most aisle seats on smaller ones) for all flights through 12/1/20. We’ll continue to block seats and limit the number of travelers on JetBlue flights through the holiday season, in order to provide additional space between those not traveling together while helping families and others who are traveling together to sit together where possible."Southwest plans to end blocking middle seats on Dec. 1. Delta and Alaska Airlines say they will limit capacity on flights through Jan. 6, but will end the policy early next year. The airlines are backing away from seat blocking as the number of passengers slowly rises. 1126
