ZHANJIANG, Guangdong, June 28 (Xinhua) -- After a five-day visit to China, Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer "Sazanami" left the southern Guangdong Province port city of Zhanjiang on Saturday morning.     Sazanami, with its 240-member crew, is the first Japanese warship to visit China since World War II.     A farewell ceremony was held at the port before its departure.     "Please send the love and friendship of the Chinese navy and people back to Japan," Lt. It will focus on communication and formation.     During its five days in port, the Japanese crew visited the Chinese missile destroyer "Shenzhen" and toured Zhanjiang's urban area. They also played basketball, football and tug-of-war with the Chinese crew in the rain that has blasted southern China of late.     In addition, officers from both sides held seminars to exchange experiences in disaster relief and other activities.     About 1,000 locals visited the Sazanami with smiles and excitement since it was opened to the public on Friday. Chinese and Japanese military bands also gave live performances for visitors with the Chinese Peking Opera and the theme of evergreen Japanese cartoon "Doraemon" on the playlist.     The destroyer with a 4,650 standard tonnage, set off from Hiroshima for the reciprocal visit. An unequal treaty was signed between China and Japan as consequence.     During 1931 and 1945, Japanese troops invaded China and the war lasted until the end of the World War II.     Resentment still remains between the two nations as there are disputes on history, sovereignty and the exploration of resources under the sea.     The military exchange came after another breakthrough in Sino-Japanese relations as a result of Chinese President Hu's landmark visit to Japan earlier this year. The two countries announced last week they had reached a principled consensus on the East China Sea issue and Japanese companies were allowed in the development of the Chunxiao oil and gas field.  BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) -- The 28-year-old policewoman Jiang Min has become a national model for her devotion to quake victims while her own mother and two-year-old daughter died in the devastating May 12 earthquake.     Jiang was received by Zhou Yongkang, secretary of the Central Committee for Political and Legislative Affairs of the Communist Party of China (CPC), at Zhongnanhai, the leadership compound in downtown Beijing, on Saturday afternoon. You have been on the frontline to assist quake victims when bearing great pains of losing the beloved. All of us should learn from you."     A day after the quake, Jiang learnt that ten members of her family living in Beichuan county, one of the worst-hit areas, passed away including her only daughter.     She was working as a police officer in the neighboring city Pengzhou.     "I felt that the sky was falling. I can't believe that. I had just talked with my baby girl on phone a day ago," she once recalled the dark moment in an interview.     But Jiang did not leave her post as more and more displaced people came to Pengzhou from quake-hit areas and the police had to help them settle down. In the week following the earthquake, she had worked at temporary shelter camps and barely slept until she fainted on the spot and was sent to hospital.     Jiang has showed the best of Chinese police officers, Zhou said.     He hoped that local police officers and those from other parts of China to assist quake relief would stick to such a noble spirit to work together and well serve their duty in a bid to help create a stable society in the quake-affected areas.     Jiang said she would not fail the Party and people's expectation and work harder in her own post.

BEIJING  -- The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) is forecasting an 8 percent increase in the country's Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the first quarter of 2008. The official government figures come out in mid-April.The bank said in a report issued on Thursday that the CPI would hit 8.2 percent in March, slightly down from the previous month as the effects from the snow chaos that hit China earlier this year died away.Inflation in China took its biggest jump in nearly 12 years in February when it rose 8.7 percent compared to the same period a year earlier. Food prices surged 23.3 percent while non-food prices edged up 1.6 percent from the year earlier period.Inflation was mainly fueled by rising food and energy prices in the global market, and compounded by domestic factors that included increased costs and a strong demand, the report said.The new round of global grain price rises, including rice and wheat, might add more pressure to the government's anti-inflation efforts.However, the inflation index would start decelerating in the second half of 2008 as the government's macro controls took effect. The continued global slowdown also weighed on demand and could gradually pull down prices, the report said.China rolled out a series of measures to fight inflation after the government was reshuffled last month. Among the latest moves was an increase in farm subsidies to boost production and curb grain price hikes.

Many of the bodies were never properly interred, and many of the Chinese visiting the memorial on Friday have no graves to visit.     Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian Province in east China, unveiled a monument ln honor of the thousands of firefighters died on duty since 1949. It is the first such monument in the country.

BEIJING, May 29 (Xinhua) -- China's Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH) urged local governments to strengthen flood control at a meeting here on Thursday.     Water resources authorities should double check the preparation work for the incoming flood season, strengthen monitoring systems and ensure the safety of major rivers and large- and medium-sized reservoirs, it said.     It also asked relevant authorities in quake zones to pay special attention to flood control and protect earthquake victims from fresh dangers.     Flood control precautions and safe water supplies in cities holding competitions for the 2008 Olympic Games in August should be ensured. It added that drought prevention work should also be listed on the agenda.     The SFDH initiated a level-three emergency response to the torrential rains that hit China over the past week causing 57 deaths.
