Pinal County Sheriff's Office says an electronic road sign showed an offensive message overnight in Queen Creek. Several viewers of Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix reached out Friday morning regarding a road sign along Hunt Highway that said "Hail Hitler". According to PCSO, the department first received a call about the sign around 2:30 a.m. A private company reportedly owns the sign and Pinal County officials say they were unable to reach the company for help at that time. They also reached out to Pinal County's public works department for help, but they too were unable to turn off the sign. Crews eventually covered up the sign so it could no longer be seen by passing drivers. KNXV crews headed out to the area later Friday morning where workers were on scene and confirmed the sign no longer had the offensive message.KNXV has reached out to the company for comment on the incident but has not yet heard back.  970

Police and other law enforcement are constantly trying to stay ahead of criminals, but sometimes technology can get in the way.Apple made headlines a couple years back, when the company refused to unlock a phone when asked by law enforcement.Then came Grayshift, a company that specializes in cracking iPhones.  "Apple's fighting these guys pretty hard,” says digital security expert Steve Beaty. “Has been a bit of a chess game right."Beaty is a digital security expert professor with Metropolitan State University of Denver."It appears that people aren't now able to break into the iPhone with the most recent release of version 12 of iOS," Beaty explains.While Apple isn't saying much about what they've done, law enforcement around the country will have to scramble to find new ways to get into these devices.Beaty seems to think it's related to a small change in access by adding a USB restrict mode--that disables devices after a certain amount of time if it’s plugged into your phone."They can plug into iPhones, that historically in general, have what we call brute force them," Beaty explains.Brute forcing allows Grayshift to continue putting in passcodes until they find the right one. But because these external devices deactivate after about an hour, their process is interrupted. That's the main belief in how Apple is thwarting these devices.If you're worried about security, it's simple to activate USB restrict mode on your phone. There may be some other problems though you could run into charging issue."So, for the time being, I don't see it being more than a chess game that they are going to be advances made on either side,” says Beaty. “And I don't think there's going to be a definitive, if you will, checkmate in the foreseeable future." 1776

Police are warning about a terrifying phone scam where the person on the other end of the phone says they are holding a family member for ransom.One woman said she received one of these calls and it was the most frightening call she ever received.Natalie Bruser was heading home from work when her cellphone rang from a number she did not recognize."I answered, and it sounded like one of my kids crying, and I couldn't figure out who it was," said Bruser, who has three children. "They were crying super hard, and so I was hysterical."The sobbing young woman said she had been kidnapped. Bruser thought it sounded most like her daughter Nicole, who is in her 20s."It seems that a black Suburban pulled up, and people got out with guns," she said. "And Nicole started screaming."A man then got on the phone and said if Bruser wanted to see her daughter again, she needed to drive over at a gas station off Interstate 75 in Springboro, and get money from an ATM.The man said police were on their tail, and then he told Bruser to stay on the phone and not call 9-1-1. The man also said Bruser needed to act quickly or they would harm her daughter, who appeared to be still crying in the background."She was crying heavily," Bruser said. "And I said, 'Nicole, please calm down. I need to hear your voice. I need to really hear that you're OK.'"But it was all a scam.Luckily, Bruser was able to yell for help, and someone nearby called the police. Officers quickly sorted the situation out.It turned out that there was no black SUV with armed men inside, there was no police car in pursuit, and as for Bruser's daughter Nicole, she was home resting."I'm freaking out at this point. I don't know if they have her hostage or not," Bruser said. "So Springboro police actually went and banged on her door, and she was sleeping, and so here she was safe at home."How the scam worksIt's called the "virtual kidnapping scam."According to police, the caller is not local and does not even know your son or daughter's name. But panicked parents will grab hundreds of dollars, then run to the nearest Western Union desk to wire money for the release of their child.Reports from around the country say this is a very effective scam. The scammers usually tell their victims to stay on the phone and not let anyone know what is going on or they will harm their child.As for the black Chevy Suburban filled with kidnappers carrying guns, the scammers have seen action movies where this is a common trope.In a moment of panic however, it's easy to miss all the holes in the caller's story.So be suspicious of any strange phone calls that appear to be from a family member in distress. OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A vintage biplane had an emergency at a South Bay airport Tuesday, sending it skidding off the runway and onto its nose. The incident with the single-engine Stearman plane was reported at Brown Field Municipal Airport, 1424 Continental St. The pilot and one passenger were on board but escaped without injury, San Diego Fire-Rescue Chief Colin Stowell reported on twitter. The plane had minor damage. Stowell tweeted that the FAA and NTSB were notified about the crash to investigate its cause. City News Service contributed to this report. 575
