At the Denver Public Library, story time is one of the most popular programs. They're interacting with me, they're responding to questions, they're rhyming,” says children’s librarian Warren Shanks. But in the age of social media, a principal in Texas is offering children a more modern option: a digital version of story time. Principal Dr. Belinda George hosts the story hour called "Tucked in Tuesday" on Facebook Live. “You can't just stay stagnant. So, she decided to read them a story, while in her pajamas, from her living room. She decided to keep reading, with the goal of bridging the gap between home and school.What started with 35 students from her Texas elementary school, has grown to hundreds of kids and parents around the world. The response has been overwhelming. “In my head, I'm doing something that I love and I’m doing something for kids, and so the attention that I’m getting is kind of like I don't know the big deal yet,” Dr. George says. Now, authors are sending in books for her to read, and some are even joining her during story time. But Dr. George says what's most important is that her students are learning.“They're learning to read with expression,” she says. “They're learning that the principal cares.” 1438

The Ohio Department of Agriculture issued a warning about an insect that could kill wine in Ohio.The spotted lanternfly can cause significant damage to some plants and has been seen in Pennsylvania. According to the Department of Agriculture, the insect is fond of grape and fruit trees, hops, blueberry, oak, pine, poplar and walnut. Adult spotted lanterflies usually eat grapevines, while nymphs eat multiple types of plants. The insects eat stems and leaves, which can cause sap to bleed and reduce photosynthesis, which can eventually kill the plant.Spotted lanternflies can be spotted now through November. The insect can be identified by its red body, roughly a half-inch in size, with black stripes and white dots. Later this summer until November, the insect is in the adult moth stage. The adults are larger, roughly one inch in size, with black bodies and brightly colored wings.The insect has not been confirmed in Ohio yet but residents who believe they have spotted one are asked to report it online or by calling 614-728-640. CHICAGO, Ill. – The fight against domestic violence has found a new warrior in a surprising place – the hair salon. And now, more and more states are looking to stylists to spot the signs of victimization. For Joan Rowan, who has been in the salon business for 44 years, the bond between hair stylist and client is strong. “It's a very intimate relationship,” said Rowan. Over the years, she says she’s heard the intimations many times before. “’He'd kill me if he knew how much money I spent. No, you can't cut my hair too short. My husband doesn't like it.’ Those kinds of answers. Suddenly you're asking them like are you OK?” It’s those in-chair conversations that drove her 20 years ago to start training her own staff to recognize the signs of domestic abuse. “They all knew stories and heard it all before. They had had clients who came bruised or hair missing,” said Rowan. Many clients she said appeared sad or afraid. In 2017, Illinois became the first state to require all cosmetologists and salon professionals to complete a one-hour, one-time education course on how to spot the signs of domestic violence and sexual assault. They look for evidence of physical abuse like bruises and cuts or outward behaviors like self-blame, sudden lifestyle changes, and irregular appointments. The law, which went into effect this year, impacted more than 84,000 licensed cosmetologists and estheticians in the state. “We are not trained as reporters or anything like that,” explained Rowan. “All we do is give them a phone number that they can call if they need help.” According to the Professional Beauty Association, Illinois, Arkansas and California, have already passed laws mandating domestic abuse training for cosmetology school students or current salon professionals. Since last year, another six including, Florida, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Texas, have attempted to pass similar legislation. For salon owner Susanne Post, it’s personal. “Part of my story is that I’m a survivor of domestic violence myself,” said Post. Two years ago, she helped create a domestic violence training program for Nashville stylists. She says she’s hopeful that her home state of Tennessee will pass a law similar to other states. "In Tennessee, we are the fifth in the nation at the rate that women are killed by men, which is just unbelievable,” she said. “It affects one in four women, and one in seven men.” Joan Rowan says she’s proud to have been part of genesis of the training and the laws that are now spreading to help protect both men and women. “It has saved lives,” Rowan said. “It's real. And it doesn't have to be. And we can all help people get out of trouble.” 2725

In a world of digital games, there’s a group of people who prefer to keep it old school.Their game of choice: pinball. "We play in a league; the Chicago Pinball Authority League,” said competitive pinball player Eric Meunier. “There are 32 active participants." Competitive pinball is growing in popularity, and its headquarters is in Chicago. "This is where a lot of the best players in the world are," Meunier said. There are over 200 pinball arcades in the city, and countless leagues. The Chicago Pinball Authority League was started by Kent Zilch. In order to understand his passion for pinball, you have to go to his basement. It all started with one machine. "Then, we bought a second, then a third, then a fourth…,” Zilch said of his pinball machine collection.Now, Zilch owns more than 60! His basement is now his permanent practice area. "We like a mixture of old pinball machines with the new ones, too,” he says. “So, if you look around, there are machines all the way back to the 60s." The newest game added to his collection is The Munsters. The games also bring the family together. Zilch’s wife and children are also on his league. "We come down here probably four or five times a week," he said. When it's pinball season, they all practice together. Zilch says they usually begin in January and go through August. "We have two divisions; we have an A division and a B division,” he said. “And whoever wins a division, wins a really cool trophy." Each game has its own set of rules. But with four people to a machine, there is one goal: rack up the most points. “You go to each game and then you get points based on what place you come in," Zilch said.The competition keeps him and his family and his team coming back to the flippers, but so does the fun. 1791
