SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who went on a South Bay crime spree that included shooting at a moving vehicle and ramming an occupied San Diego police vehicle during a pursuit was sentenced Thursday to 19 years in state prison.Alfonso Ayala Flores, 26, pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges of assault with a semi-automatic firearm and resisting arrest for a series of crimes last November that culminated in him driving toward officers who cornered him in a cul-de-sac and ramming a patrol car.One officer opened fire on the pickup truck Flores was driving, striking the truck, but not Flores.He was also given a separate 16-month sentence for an unrelated burglary case, but that term will be served concurrently with his 19-year prison term.The spree began with Flores carjacking a motorist's Ford F-150 pickup at the Frontier Motel in San Ysidro on Nov. 6. Deputy District Attorney Mary Naoom said that on the following day, Flores shot at an occupied vehicle.Two days later, he sped off when San Diego police spotted him driving the stolen truck in the 1900 block of Dairy Mart Road in San Ysidro. The suspect, who had a female companion in the truck with him, fled west, where he wound up at the end of a cul-de-sac in the Nestor neighborhood.As officers got out of their cars and shouted at him to halt, Flores made a U-turn and accelerated toward them, prompting one of the officers to open fire, police and prosecutors said.Naoom said Flores rammed the patrol car with the pickup as he sped away, with police again in pursuit. The subsequent chase ended in the 1200 block of Holly Avenue in Imperial Beach, where he pulled over and ran off along with the woman, according to Sainz.His companion was quickly apprehended and questioned by police before being released. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A person died today in a traffic collision involving a motorcycle and an SUV near Escondido.The crash happened at 4 p.m. Saturday on Birch Avenue and Bear Valley Parkway in an unincorporated area outside Escondido, the California Highway Patrol said.An Acura MDX SUV and a motorcycle collided, killing one person, the CHP said. It was not immediately known whether the victim was on the motorcycle or in the SUV.The accident forced the closure of northbound Bear Valley at Idaho Avenue. Traffic on southbound Bear Valley was being diverted to Birch, the CHP said. 589

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A would-be carjacker who didn't know how to drive a stick shift was foiled when he tried to steal a car with a manual transmission in San Diego's Fox Canyon neighborhood, police said today.Two teenagers were sitting in the car around 10:45 p.m. Thursday in a hilly residential area near Auburn Drive and Wightman Street when a young man approached the window and demanded the victims' phones, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said. The man then demanded the victims, an 18-year-old man and 17-year-old boy, get out of the car."They got out and the suspect got in and tried to drive away,'" Heims said. "He revved the engine several times but the car did not go. It appeared the suspect did not know how to drive a manual and got out and ran away." 783

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A young man who was seen being repeatedly struck by San Diego police officers in a widely viewed social-media video was sentenced to four years and four months in prison Friday for resisting arrest and unrelated robbery and burglary cases.Trenelle D. Cannon, 20, pleaded guilty last month to charges stemming from a video clip showing a group of officers punching him during a struggle on a South Bay roadside in early May. The 12-second video sparked public debate, with critics saying the officers used excessive force in arresting Cannon. At that point, police said Cannon burst out of the vehicle and tackled the patrolman, prompting several other officers to pile onto Cannon as one of his companions videotaped the unfolding fracas from inside the car."Believing Cannon possibly had another weapon, responding officers used a combination of physical force and distraction strikes to take him into custody while continuously giving him orders to surrender,'' Nisleit said."Cannon refused to cooperate and struggled to keep his hands in front of his body. "We will continue to advocatewith our students, who are doing a tremendous job of educating legislators about the necessity of adequately funding the university to ensure UC remains a world-class institution and engine of economic growth for our state."The Board of Regents had been expected to consider a 2.7 percent boost in base tuition. While that vote will no longer happen, the regents could revisit the issue "depending on the outcome of budget negotiations in Sacramento."UC officials said they will look to secure an additional 0 million in state funding above what was already proposed for the coming year in the governor's budget proposal.The announcement echoed a decision announced last week by California State University Chancellor Timothy White, who said the CSU would also focus on lobbying the state for additional funds rather than pursuing a tuition hike."In light of California's strong economy, California's students and their families should not be saddled with additional financial burden to attain public higher education," White said.
