SAN DIEGO (CNS) - One of nine servicemembers killed last month when an amphibious assault vehicle sank in the ocean near San Clemente Island was laid to rest Friday at Miramar National Cemetery.Lance Cpl. Chase D. Sweetwood, 18, was among those killed in the July 30 maritime training mission when the vehicle they were in took on water and sank.Family members say the Portland resident was born in San Diego and grew up in Chula Vista, and died one day before his 19th birthday.Sweetwood was honored during a Friday morning funeral that included military honors and a procession from the Patriot Guard Riders.Eight Camp Pendleton-based Marines, including Sweetwood, and a Navy sailor died in the mishap. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- The San Diego City Council unanimously approved the creation Tuesday of an emergency rental assistance program tied to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which will utilize .1 million in federal COVID-19 funds to support thousands of low-income residents experiencing financial hardships.The COVID-19 Emergency Rental Assistance Program will provide up to ,000 per household, assisting around 3,500 households total, according to the San Diego Housing Commission.Applications will be available through the housing commission's website no later than July 20."Our rental assistance program cleared another hurdle today, and in a matter of weeks over million will be directly available to thousands of renters struggling to navigate the financial challenges of the COVID pandemic," said City Councilman Chris Ward, who proposed the program's creation.Ward initially sought to allocate .9 million of the city's 8.5 million federal CARES Act funding for the program, but that amount was pared down following disagreement from other council members."The current .1 million is a start to what I hope is continued relief for residents, especially since this program gives us a mechanism to add funds as they become available," Ward said.To be eligible for the program, households:-- must be located within the city of San Diego-- have a household income at or below 60% of the San Diego Area Median Income-- must not be receiving any rental subsidies-- must not be a tenant of a property owned or managed by the housing commission-- must not have savings to meet their financial needs-- must have eligible immigration status-- must have experienced hardships directly related to COVID-19Priority will be given to families with children and households with people age 62 and older. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation launched a project Thursday to build an Armed Forces Memorial Amphitheater with permanent seating in the cemetery's assembly area.The foundation, which sponsors the Avenue of Flags as well as the Veterans Tribute Tower & Carillon and the annual veterans' services at the cemetery, is working with cemetery leadership and the VA's National Cemetery Administration on the design of the amphitheater.The VA-required construction of the amphitheater and maintenance endowment are expected to cost between 0,000 and 0,000 -- the largest project the Support Foundation has yet undertaken at Miramar National Cemetery. No federal funds will be expended for the project."We're dedicating our fifth Annual "Virtual Gala" fund-raiser to the Armed Forces Memorial Amphitheater, said Charlie Inot, Support Foundation president and CEO. "We're asking corporations, members of veterans' organizations and civic groups, as well as the public, to help make this vision for Miramar a reality through their generous contributions."The plan for the amphitheater includes long concrete benches arranged in a semi-circle within the existing flag assembly area. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The city of San Diego will begin enforcing parking regulations again starting Oct. 1 with a two-week grace period before full enforcement Oct. 15.The city temporarily suspended parking enforcement on March 16 following the COVID-19 stay-at-home order. Multiple attempts in the following months to reinforce parking regulations have been thwarted by ongoing shutdown orders.In developing a plan to restart parking enforcement, city staff consulted with several business groups representing communities across San Diego.Starting Thursday, the city will issue written warnings for vehicles parked in violation of:-- Posted street sweeping routes-- Metered parking restrictions-- Curb time limits-- Commercial zonesCitations will continue to be issued for vehicles parked illegally at red, white and blue painted curbs.
