OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - After years of planning, the City of Oceanside is now weeks away from breaking ground on a project that will create a new source of drinking water. Called Pure Water Oceanside, recycled water with go through a rigorous purification system, ultimately supplying 32 percent of the city's water supply needs. "It's more sustainable and will help us stabilize rates moving forward," said Sarah Davis, a Senior Environmental Specialist with the City of Oceanside.Right now, the city is offering tours of its water plant and educating residents on Pure Water Oceanside. Similar projects have gained headlines because water from your sinks and toilets is recycled into drinking water.Davis wants to assure the public that Pure Water Oceanside will yield high-quality drinking water that is clean, safe, drought-proof, and environmentally sound. "Currently, Oceanside imports the majority of our water from Northern California or the Colorado River, so that comes from hundreds of miles away, and takes a lot of energy to transport. Also, the cost of that continues to increase," said Davis. Officials broke ground on a new national memorial in Washington, D.C. Thursday to honor the millions of Americans who served in World War I, 100 years after the United States got involved in the conflict.The memorial will be built in Pershing Park, a small plaza about a block away from the White House.More than 100,000 Americans died in the war and more than 200,000 others were injured. Now, nearly 100 later, there are no living survivors from World War I."It's a national tragedy that the millions of veterans of the Great War have not been memorialized in our capitol,” said Terry Hamby, commissioner of the United States World War I Centennial Commission."There was so much sacrifice in World War I, it's time for America to build a memorial to the forgotten war." Hamby’s grandfather fought in the war. His uncle died in it.“It means a lot to me, personally, because when you have a memorial and you can go stand in front of it, the emotion burst forth,” Hamby said.In Washington, D.C., other American wars are honored with a national memorial, including World War II, as well as the wars in Korea and Vietnam.The Centennial Commission was established by Congress in 2013 and authorized to create a new national-level memorial in the nation's capital, to honor the men and women who served.Denise Rohan, National Commander of the American Legion, expressed support for the memorial and the veterans it will honor.“Their legacy is one of freedom and heroism. Some paid the ultimate price. The American Legion supports this overdue memorial because the world must forever remember the story of those men and women who liberated a continent. OCEANSIDE (CNS) - A pedestrian was hit and killed while crossing an Oceanside highway late Saturday night, police said.The crash was reported to police shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of state Route 76 and Douglas Drive, according to Oceanside police Sgt. Rick Davis.Officers found a man lying unresponsive in eastbound lanes of Route 76.Davis said according to witness statements and evidence at the crash scene, investigators believe the pedestrian was crossing Route 76 from north to south against a red light, and was hit by a car heading east on the highway with a green light.The driver, who was not injured, immediately stopped and waited for police to arrive, Davis said. Police did not suspect alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.The name of the victim was not immediately released. 826

ORLANDO, Fla. — A Georgia woman who ran in the 10th Anniversary Disney Princess Half Marathon over the weekend says she lost a cross pendant necklace filled with her daughter's ashes on Sunday.Chasity Foster, a teacher from Augusta, Georgia, lost her 17-year-old daughter, Shaylin, in a car crash on her way to school last month. Shaylin was a high school senior who had been accepted into college to become a biomechanical engineer with the dream of creating prosthetics for children. Before the tragic accident, Foster said the two used to run several marathons together; including the Disney marathon."She was a very fast runner. She was involved in soccer, cross country and track," Foster told Digital Producer Veronica Beltran over the phone. Foster said this year they had signed up for the Disney Fairy Tale Challenge, previously known as the Glass Slipper challenge, — which involves a 19.3 mile magical adventure in two days including the Disney Princess Enchanted 10K and the 10th Anniversary Disney Princess Half Marathon.She said after last month's accident she was unsure about participating in the race. After Wesley Baker, Shaylin's best friend, asked his mom, "what if Shaylin would have wanted us to?" she knew they would in fact be heading to Florida for the race to run in her honor.Foster said her husband, Chris, ran in Shaylin's place and even wore her Princess Anna costume. During Sunday's marathon, Foster says she was hesitant to wear the cross pendant necklace with Shaylin's ashes because it means so much to her but she wanted her daughter to be there with her as she ran even if she wasn't there physically."I had my husband double check to make sure the necklace was on properly because I didn't want it to fall off," Foster said. "During mile three, I realized the necklace was missing. It's devastating to lose any child and then to lose the necklace I started freaking out."She said she was still wearing the necklace when they were in front of the Magic Kingdom parking lot entrance. A short distance later, near the princesses, is when she realized it was gone.She went to look for it with her family and friends, but wasn't able to find it before heading back to Georgia."To lose this necklace is just devastating and priceless. No amount of money in the world could replace this necklace," she said.Foster said the necklace matches her daughter's promise ring — which her father gave her at her 16th birthday — and has her name engraved in the back."If anyone finds the necklace they can contact me in any way possible that they can," Foster said. OAKLAND, Calif. — A bust of Breonna Taylor was vandalized in Oakland, California.The Oakland Police Department is investigating after large pieces of the statue were found broken off sometime over the weekend, KGO and KTVU report.The sculpture was made by artist Lee Carson to honor the 26-year-old EMT who was shot and killed in her apartment by Louisville police officers in March. The deaths of Taylor, George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery prompted countless people across the country to take to the streets over the summer to protest police violence against people of color.Carson told KTVU that he hoped the piece would energize the Black Lives Matter movement, which seeks to eradicate white supremacy and intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities.Carson told KGO that the vandalism felt like an attack on Taylor and those fighting against racial injustice.The statue is made of clay, concrete, wood and foam, and was reportedly installed in the downtown area this month. Along with a bust of Taylor, it includes the words “say her name Breonna Taylor,” which has become a rallying cry.Carson told KGO that he intends to repair the statue as soon as possible and he may cast it in bronze this time. 1217
