BEIJING, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Some 600,000 people visited graveyards in the suburbs of Chinese capital Beijing on Friday, about triple last year's figure of 189,000, according to official statistics.     On Dec. 16, the State Council (cabinet) revised the nation's official holiday schedule to add three traditional festivals -- Qingming, Duanwu and Zhongqiu -- in response to public calls. The holiday marked on Friday was Qingming, or grave-sweeping day.     The change was intended to allow more people to pay their respects to deceased relatives on what would otherwise be a workday like Friday. In Huangling County, Shaanxi Province, 8,000 people including some senior officials attended the annual memorial service at the tomb of Huangdi, the "Yellow Emperor" of Chinese legend.     Governor Yuan Chunqing addressed the gathering and expressed his hopes that the Beijing Olympic Games would be successful, the reunification of China would occur and the world would become harmonious.     Scholars say that Qingming has preserved the "feeling" of being Chinese across the generations.     "Traditional culture has been infused with new spirits in different eras, and this is the mysterious power of Chinese Culture," Shi Aidong of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told Xinhua in an interview.     Qingming is always a day of bitter memories for residents of Nanjing, the provincial capital of Jiangsu. The Memorial Hall of the Nanjing Massacre received numerous domestic visitors -- and many from Japan.     "We, from the aggressor side of the war, want to show regret to the victims on this special day," said one of the Japanese visitors.     In December 1937, invading Japanese troops slaughtered 300,000 Chinese soldiers and civilians in the city, which was then the national capital. Many of the bodies were never properly interred, and many of the Chinese visiting the memorial on Friday have no graves to visit.     Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian Province in east China, unveiled a monument ln honor of the thousands of firefighters died on duty since 1949. It is the first such monument in the country.

BEIJING, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said during a spring planting inspection in the northern Hebei Province on Saturday and Sunday that the Chinese people were fully capable of feeding themselves.     Wen said the country's self-reliance in feeding its 1.3 billion people with its own grain production was a great contribution to the world.     "China has abundant grain reserves standing at 150 million to 200 million tonnes," said Wen. BEIJING, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- The ongoing global financial turbulence will have a limited impact on China's banks and financial system in the short run, according to officials and experts.     "We feel China's financial system and its banks are, to the chaos developed in the U.S. and other parts of the world, relatively shielded from those problems," said senior economist Louis Kuijs at the World Bank Beijing Office.     He told Xinhua one reason was that Chinese banks were less involved in the highly sophisticated financial transactions and products.     "They were lucky not to be so-called developed, because this (financial crisis) is very much a developed market crisis." Farmers harvest rice in 850 farm in Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province on Sept. 26, 2008.    A few Chinese lenders were subject to losses from investing in foreign assets involved in the Wall Street crisis, but the scope and scale were small and the banks had been prepared for possible risks, Liu Fushou, deputy director of the Banking Supervision Department I of the China Banking Regulatory Commission, told China Central Television (CCTV).     Chinese banks had only invested 3.7 percent of their total wealth in overseas assets that were prone to international tumult, CCTV reported. The ratio of provisions to possible losses had exceeded 110 percent at large, state owned listed lenders, 120 percent at joint stock commercial banks and 200 percent at foreign banks.     Kuijs noted most of the banks resided in China where capital control made it more difficult to move money in and out. Besides, the country's large foreign reserves prevented the financial system from a lack of liquidity, which was troubling the strained international markets.     "At times like this, one cannot rule out anything," he said. "But still we believe the economic development and economic fundamentals in China are such that it's not easy to foresee a significant direct impact on the financial system."     However, he expected an impact on China's banks coming via the country's real economy, as exports, investment and plans of companies would be affected by the troubled world economy and in turn increase pressure on bad loans.     Wang Xiaoguang, a Beijing-based macro-economist, said the growing risks on global markets would render a negative effect on China in the short term but provided an opportunity for the country to fuel its growth more on domestic demand than on external needs.     He urged while China, the world's fastest expanding economy, should be more cautious of fully opening up its capital account, the government should continue its market reforms on the domestic financial industry without being intimidated.     Chinese banks had strengthened the management of their investments in overseas liquid assets and taken a more prudent strategy in foreign currency-denominated investment products since the U.S.-born financial crisis broke out, CCTV reported.

JIUQUAN, Gansu, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- The crew of China's Shenzhou-7 space mission is scheduled to meet the press at 17:30 on Wednesday.     In addition, the headquarters of China's third manned space mission will hold another press conference at 14:30 Wednesday.     The crew, who will conduct the first Chinese space walk, is waiting for a launch window at Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern Gansu Province.     Depending on weather, the launch is scheduled between Sept. 25 and 30. The spaceship has been finished docking with the rocket recently.    The Shenzhou-7 spacecraft will send three Chinese astronauts who will make a historical spacewalk.     Six Chinese astronauts are ready for the mission, three pilots who will finally be aboard and three substitutes.     However neither the military or the mission's headquarters has officially released their identities, even though many local websites had reported various stories on six favorites.     According to the headquarters' release, three pilots and three substitutes said they were fully confident to successfully accomplish the mission.     After three hours of tests and safety examinations in the last rehearsal on Monday, the mission has been given the green light.     Scientists working for the mission said on Tuesday that the carrier rocket of the spacecraft was ready to be fueled, bringing the launch to the countdown status.

XIAMEN, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- China will further open up to the world and step up its international investment cooperation, Vice Premier Wang Qishan promised here Monday.     Addressing the 12th Xiamen International Trade and Investment Fair in the east Fujian Province, Wang said the country would continue to stick to the national policy of opening up, constantly improve its policies on utilizing foreign investment and investing in foreign countries, and create more space for foreign companies to develop their business in China.     China's reform and opening up policy had significantly transformed the country in the past 30 years, and its accession to the World Trade Organization had further integrated it with the global economy, he said.     Although the country met with severe natural disasters and an unfavorable international economic environment, its coping measures made its national economy stay healthy on the whole, he said, noting it was confident in and capable of overcoming the current difficulties and challenges.     Expounding on improving its policies on utilizing foreign investment and investing in foreign countries, Wang vowed to further improve the country's investment environment including building a service-oriented government, a market of fair competition, a transparent legal environment and stable policy environment.     He also stressed lifting the quality and diversifying the means of utilizing foreign investment, and encouraging domestic enterprises to invest in foreign countries.     The Chinese government had always supported trade and investment liberalization and opposed protectionism in any form, he said, vowing to work with the world to eliminate trade and investment barriers and cope with various difficulties and challenges for global economic prosperity and stability.     Attendants of the forum are from 120 countries and regions and seven international organizations
