SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Surveillance video from a Clairemont church shows a woman with a gun in one hand and her baby in the other, prosecutors said.The video was played in court Friday as the preliminary hearing started for Anna Conkey.Conkey is accused of walking into Sunday services at Church Tsidkenu in April and making threats while holding her 10-month-old son.Pastor Benjamin Wisan testified Conkey pointed the gun at parishioners and her own baby. Wisan was on stage and tried to calm everyone by telling them the weapon was a Taser. A 911 call prosecutors say Conkey made to report herself was played for the jury."Hi, yes, there's a woman at a church and she's saying she's going to blow up the foundation of the church,” said the person in the 911 call. Police later determined the weapon was not loaded. Wisan said Conkey had disrupted services weeks before the incident. He had tried to set up a meeting with her but it did not happen. Conkey pleaded not guilty to several felony counts including child abuse, making criminal threats, and a false report of a bomb. A judge will determined if the case will go to trial. 1312

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sunday, San Diego County health officials reported 568 new coronavirus cases and three new community outbreaks, including one at a preschool.The county's new cases were out of 8,943 reported tests, a 6% positive rate, and brought the region's total to 23,682 cases.The three new community outbreaks were reported in a restaurant/bar, in a manufacturing facility, and in a preschool, the county said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The man who jumped on stage during a Taylor Swift concert and assaulted a security guard was charged Monday with a deadly beating in the Midway area, police said. Christian Ewing, 29, was charged for the death of 57-year-old Gregory Freeman, according to SDPD Homicide Lt. Anthony Dupree. Officers got a 911 call about an assault near the Interstate 5 overpass at 3900 Rosecrans St. the evening of Dec. 5. A witness said a victim was on the ground and another man was hitting him with an object, investigators reported. He died three days later of his injuries. The suspect fled the scene, police said.Ewing was arrested on Dec. 21 for a parole violation and rebooked Monday on suspicion of murder. In 2015, Ewing jumped on stage at Petco Park as Taylor Swift was performing. Swift’s personal security guard, David Durkin, told Ewing he was not allowed to be in the area. During a struggle, Ewing seriously injured Durkin. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Laurel Street Bridge at Balboa Park was closed late Friday after a fire started inside the bridge. At around 7:30 p.m., Park Rangers called the San Diego Fire Department after seeing smoke coming out of the side of the 105-year-old bridge. The closure caused great inconvenience for Old Globe Theater patrons trying to get to and out of Friday night's show. Season ticket holders Kenny Ard and Brian Moore barely made it to the theater, before the bridge was closed off by emergency responders. Witnesses saw firefighters carefully try to suppress the flames by opening the manholes on the road.“We kind of rushed when we saw the fire truck," Moore said. “I was like, I bet they’re going to close the bridge. So we hurried and made sure we got here.“San Diego Fire Fighters said the fire broke out inside of the hollow bridge. They have not announced the cause of the flames. However, this scene was all too familiar. Since its construction in 1914, the Laurel Street Bridge has caught fire several times. Many of the fires were started by transients who end up living inside the bridge. In 2017, several homeless people were rescued from inside a utility hole on the bridge.“There are access panels at the base and some on the sides, and so people get in there,” Moore said. While Are and Moore were able to avoid the jam getting to the show, they were not so lucky finding their way home.“My car is parked right on the other side of the bridge,” And said. “We’re going to have to take a Lyft because it’s a long way around.”The bridge had reopened by Saturday morning. 1601

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Teachers, grocery workers and police officers are among those slated to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in the next phase, but there is still debate about how best to prioritize those industries during the rollout.After the vaccine reaches individuals in Phase 1A, frontline healthcare workers and people in nursing homes, a CDC advisory panel recommended Sunday that Phase 1B consist of people aged 75 and up and certain high-risk essential workers.About 30 million essential workers fall into this category. Ultimately, it will be up to states and local health departments to determine which of those essential workers get first access to the lifesaving vaccines.“I feel like we're on an organ transplant committee deciding who gets the liver and gets to survive. It's a tough decision,” said Dr. Christian Ramers, a member of San Diego County’s vaccine advisory group.There is particular focus on when to vaccinate teachers. Nevada’s preliminary plan is to put teachers and transit workers ahead of food and retail workers. On the other hand, Louisiana’s plan is to vaccinate prison guards and food processing workers before teachers.“I really hate that idea that we are pitted against other essential workers,” said California Teachers Association president Toby Boyd.There are health and economic considerations surrounding the timing of immunizations for teachers. On one hand, there’s broad agreement that in-person learning offers superior educational and emotional outcomes for children, along with significant child care benefits for families.“It’s going to help economically because it will allow parents to go back into the workforce without worrying about their child,” Boyd said.On the other hand, education can happen virtually while jobs like policing, firefighting and food processing cannot.
