SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - A kindergartner walked out of his Santee school, crossed a busy four-lane road and made it to his home more than a mile away, his mother told 10News Thursday.The Cajon Park Elementary student had been placed in a 3rd grade classroom with his upperclassman buddy when his grandmother arrived to pick him up.According to the 5-year-old boy’s parents, the 3rd grade teacher told the boy to pack his things because he was going home and sent him to the office alone.The boy didn’t fully understand the instructions and walked past the office to his home, crossing busy Magnolia Ave.There is only one gate in and out of the school and the boy apparently passed through it undetected.School administrators noticed the boy was missing about half an hour later and told his grandmother, who panicked.The boy’s mother said she realized something was wrong when her doorbell camera sent an alert. She looked at the video and saw her son on the front porch with a woman approaching him.The woman turned out to be a school administrator who had been searching for the boy.Rob Cunningham has a kindergartner at the school and was concerned by the incident.“We trust the school to know where our child is when we drop them off and expect them to be here when we pick them up,” Cunningham said.Santee School District Superintendent Dr. Kristin Baranski responded to 10News’ request for comments, saying the boy was found safe within 15 minutes.She added the school has a practice of sending a buddy with younger children when they need to visit the school office but in this case, the guest teacher did not follow the practice.Administrators will put additional communication practices in place with guest teachers to make sure they are aware of the policy, Baranski said. 1789

(KGTV) - A 3-month-old golden retriever puppy with a price tag of ,700 was stolen from a pet shop Thursday night in Santee.That’s according to Sharon Franco, the owner of Pups and Pets, who has surveillance video of an unidentified man grabbing the dog while in a play-pen and running out the front door.The man had been in the store earlier but came back a second time and asked to play with the golden retriever puppy, said Franco.He played with it for about 5 minutes before he picked it up and ran out of the store.Two employees tried to run after him but said a car was waiting outside. They described it as an older model Audi with Florida plates.Anyone with information is urged to call the San Diego Sheriff’s Department. 754

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Santa Clara County announced its first coronavirus death Monday. According to the county’s public health department, the person who died was a woman in her 60s who was hospitalized for several weeks. The woman was the first person in Santa Clara County to test positive for COVID-19 without any known history of international travel or contact with a traveler. SAN YSIDRO (CNS) - A pedestrian was struck and killed by a van early Monday morning while he was attempting to cross a San Ysidro street, police said.It happened shortly before 1:10 a.m. in the 400 block of East San Ysidro Boulevard, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The unidentified man, believed to be in his 40s, stepped off the east curb of East San Ysidro Boulevard and was struck by a 64-year-old man driving a 1999 Chevrolet Astro van in the northbound lanes, Buttle said.The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, Buttle said.The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with officers, Buttle said.Alcohol or drugs were not believed to be factors in the collision, Buttle said. SAN MARCOS (KGTV) -- Since CSU San Marcos student Adrianne McWilliams was young, the service was always near and dear to her heart."My dad was active duty for 20 years, so the first few years of my life I moved around a lot. When I was in elementary school, my mom started working for the Marine Corps," McWilliams said.When she found out that those coming home from deployment wouldn't get the staple celebration she remembered as a child, McWilliams wanted to take matters into her own hands."It just kind of made me think about how when I was really young and my dad was deployed, whenever he came back there was always that big homecoming moment," McWilliams told 10News.She created thank you and care packages for those returning home from duty."I'm doing everything I can to make sure that there's at least a little handwritten note on it that says 'welcome home' and 'thank you for your service' so at least they get that little bit of homecoming that they'd get if this were under usual circumstances," McWilliams added.She included basic essentials like toiletries and snacks, something she said they could use since many of them have to self quarantine for two weeks before reuniting with family."Our Marines that are coming home do deserve a special homecoming. Coming home after a long deployment then having to quarantine is not an ideal situation," said McWilliams.McWilliams gathered gifts and donations thanks to friends, family and community members, all from word of mouth and social media. Her first batch was given to 35 returning members."I've always liked giving back but when it's something I'm passionate about and have a personal connection to, the motivation is a little stronger and it's something that hits closer to home," she said.On June 2, 50 packages will be given to another group of returning members.
