BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Major foreign media have been positive in their coverage of Chinese President Hu Jintao's recent interview with two U.S. newspapers.On the eve of his state visit to the United States, Hu answered questions concerning major domestic and international issues in a written interview with reporters from Wall Street Journal and Washington Post on Monday.Japanese newspaper Tokyo Shimbun said President Hu stressed the need to reform the U.S. dollar-based international financial system and expressed disagreement with the U.S. criticism of the slow appreciation of the Chinese yuan. BEIJING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Wednesday pledged to cement legislative ties.The pledge came out of talks in Beijing between Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China Wu Bangguo and Chairman of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) Choe Tae Bok.In his opening remarks, Wu said the meeting was his third with Choe this year.The first meeting took place when DPRK leader Kim Jong Il visited China in May. Choe was then a part of Kim's entourage.Wu and Choe then met on the sidelines of an international parliamentary leaders' meeting in Geneva in July."Three meetings in one year reflects our special relationship," Wu said, adding that he expects Choe's visit to boost bilateral relations and ties between the two nations' legislatures.Saying China and DPRK are good neighbors, Wu noted that China-DPRK relations have withstood the tests of changes in the international arena.China-DPRK relations have witnessed significant progress this year, Wu said, citing DPRK leader Kim Jong Il's two visits to China during which Chinese President Hu and Kim reached a number of important agreements.Wu said it is the unswerving principle of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government to cement and develop friendly ties with the DPRK.China hopes to work with the DPRK to carry out the consensus of their leaders while maintaining high-level exchanges and stepping up strategic consultation, Wu said.Choe hailed China's remarkable achievements of the reform and opening-up and China's modernization drive, expressing hope the Chinese people will make further progress in building socialism with Chinese characteristics.On legislative ties, Wu said the NPC and the SPA play crucial roles in their countries' politics.The NPC hopes to work closely with the SPA on state governance and legal system building while boosting communication and consultation on international and regional parliamentary organizations, Wu said.Choe began a five-day visit to China Tuesday. SHANGHAI, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- The first annual development report for east China's metropolis Shanghai was released Thursday, pointing out new strategies to build the city into an international economic, financial, trading and shipping center by 2020.The Development Report on Shanghai International Economic, Financial, Trading and Shipping Center was released by the municipal Development and Reform Commission and the municipal Development and Reform Institute.The report reviews the efforts and progress in building Shanghai on four fronts and makes proposals for future development.Shanghai set the goal of becoming the center in the four areas in 2009.At the ceremony marking the release of the report, scholars gathered to discuss Shanghai's development.In terms of becoming an international economic center, Jiang Yingshi, president of the Shanghai Society of Macroeconomics, said that Shanghai should draw on the World Expo effect to enhance its service-oriented economy, regional integration, and cultural development.To become an international financial center, Xiao Lin, deputy chief of the municipal Development and Reform Commission, said that the key task in the next decade is for Shanghai to become the RMB products trading and investment hub with world class financial services.In terms of becoming an international trading center, Yuan Zhigang, economics professor at Fudan University, said that efforts should be made to develop high end products and build Shanghai into a shopping paradise.In terms of becoming an international shipping center, scholars pointed out the importance of a modern shipping service system.The development report will be released every year starting in 2010 to keep track of each breakthrough along the way, said Xiao Lin.

QINGDAO, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan-based EVA Airways Corp. Saturday launched a weekly direct flight service linking southern Taiwan's Kaohsiung City and Qingdao City in eastern Shandong Province.The service will operate on Saturdays. It is the first direct service between the two cities.The flight will increase the number of direct flights between Qingdao and Taiwan to 20 per week, according to Qingdao Airport.Thanks to increased people-to-people exchange between Taiwan and the mainland, Qingdao Airport's passenger traffic to and from Taiwan this year reached 145,495 on Nov. 15, a 55 percent year-on-year increase.
