The news of dogs?left tied up, abandoned by owners in Palm Beach County to fend for themselves during Hurricane Irma, disturbed many of you, and us.The question .. will Palm Beach County hold those pet owners accountable?  It's not something the animals asked for, to be abandoned by their families, for a storm. "Absolutely unacceptable. People need to be responsible pet owners in this community," says State Attorney Dave Aronberg."The animals should be a valued part of your family and they should be a part of your plan," says Animal Care and Control Capt. Dave Walesky. More than 50 dogs and 15 cats were surrendered to Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control. Around 38 other dogs, left to fend for themselves, mostly in the Glades area.  "Many of them were loose inside fenced yards, some were loose in the community where they just got turned loose or some were tied and left in small cages," says Walesky. "One of the dogs was left tied to a structure with a bowl of water and a bunch of bananas." It's not just sad, it's a crime. "And there is no excuse for leaving your pet behind to die. We are going to hold accountable those who we can prove left their dogs behind in the storm," says Aronberg.   1261

The list of recalled hand sanitizers is growing. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has named dozens that contain methanol, which can cause blindness or hospitalizations if absorbed through skin.A consumer watchdog tells us these products are not FDA approved. That's because in March, the agency allowed companies that never made hand sanitizer to make it in order to meet demand. They just had to agree to follow the rules.“So, guess what happened? Some of them didn't follow the rules, either intentionally or unintentionally, and so then, they started getting reports from the poison control centers of people getting sick from methanol in hand sanitizer instead of ethanol,” said Teresa Murray with U.S. PIRG.Murray says many of the recalled products have been made in Mexico. But as part of the temporary guidelines, companies don't have to disclose where the sanitizers were manufactured. So, it's hard for consumers to tell which products might be dangerous.Murray says if you can't tell where the product was made, don't buy it and don't use it if it's already in your home. To be safe, stick with brand names you recognize for now.Murray has found most stores and online retailers have pulled products on the FDA list, but you should still be careful depending on where you shop.“I would caution anyone from buying anything that's on an end-cap clearance aisle, or anything that's from a super discount store,” said Murray. “There may be a reason why one of the mainstream retailers is no longer selling it.”Murray says it's always important to keep hand sanitizers out of reach for kids and pets, but now, even more so.If ingested, methanol can cause even more health problems.Click here to learn more from the FDA. 1738

The Miami Police Department said they are investigating an incident involving an officer in uniform who was spotted wearing a pro-Trump mask inside a polling site.According to the Miami Herald, the officer was spotted wearing the mask inside a polling site, which under state statute, is not allowed during an election if they are endorsing a candidate.The picture of the officer was taken by Steve Simeonidis, who according to Buzzfeed News is the Chair of Miami-Dade Democrats.The police department said in a tweet that they are aware of the photograph and this type of behavior is "unacceptable, a violation of departmental policy, and is being addressed immediately." 679

The Miss America Organization is sharing the sad news of the death of Leanza Cornett, Miss America in 1993, at the age of 49.“Leanza had a bright and beautiful spirit and her laugh was infectious. We know she meant so much to so many, including all of you. The Gulf Coast appears to have dodged a bullet after Marco — once a tropical storm — collapsed into a post-tropical cyclone as it neared the Louisiana coast. But the National Hurricane Center (NHC) warns that the region faces a more substantial threat in Hurricane Laura.Just after 8 a.m. on Tuesday, the NHC reported that Laura had officially strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of over 74 mph. As part of the agency's 11 p.m.. ET update, the storm is expected to reach the Louisiana or Texas coast by late Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning. By the time it reaches the coast, the NHC forecasts that the storm could be a Major Category 3 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 120 MPH.At 11 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Hurricane Laura had top winds of 90 MPH, and was located 405 miles southeast of Lake Charles, Louisiana. The storm is moving west-northwest at 17 MPH.The storm has already proven to be deadly.
