SAN DIEGO (CNS) - SANDAG and Caltrans opened a southbound Interstate 5 auxiliary lane in the University City area.The new exit-only lane allows motorists to enter the freeway from Genesee Avenue and continue directly to the La Jolla Village Drive off-ramp without having to merge with freeway traffic.The approximately half-mile auxiliary lane is intended to improve traffic flow, reduce travel delays and increase overall safety in the area. Prior to its completion, the heavily trafficked southbound I-5 off-ramp to La Jolla Village Drive often caused congestion on the freeway, posing a safety risk to motorists.Construction for the I-5/Genesee Avenue Auxiliary Lane project began in July 2019 and required careful work alongside freeway traffic. The million project was made possible by the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, which increased the state gas tax to fund state transportation projects.The auxiliary lane was constructed concurrently with the Mid-Coast Trolley project, which will extend Blue Line Trolley service from Downtown San Diego north to the University community when it opens for service in late 2021.The auxiliary lane runs beneath the Voigt Drive Trolley bridge, one of two locations where the future trolley will travel over I-5. 1278

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Protesters are planning to assemble Saturday outside the California Democratic Party Convention in San Diego as part of a ``Working People's Day of Action,'' according to a local labor organization.The rally will start outside Convention Center Park at 3:30 p.m., according to the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council. Workers will advocate for their rights two days before the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to hear a case that could have a dramatic impact on the ability of workers' unions to raise money.The case, Janus v. AFSCME Council 31, will determine whether public sector labor unions are allowed to charge mandatory fees to all workers in their organizations. The case could overturn the Supreme Court's 1977 ruling in Abood v. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 2,686 new COVID-19 infections -- the 26th consecutive day with more than 1,000 cases.On Saturday, there were no new virus-related deaths reported.Saturday was the 18th day with more than 2,000 new cases.Another 35 people also were hospitalized, according to Saturday's data, and another two were sent to intensive care units.The county's cumulative cases increased to 142,647 and the death toll remained at 1,402.Nine new community outbreaks were confirmed on Friday. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Lucky Duck Foundation announced a million region-wide homeless employment and jobs training initiative Friday, aiming to hire and train people experiencing homelessness to secure long-term employment.An anonymous donor gave the million gift in grants to expand existing programs and launch new ones, including culinary skills, homeless outreach, community beautification work, youth support services and intensive job training.The donor asked the foundation to focus on high-impact programs to help people on the streets.FACING IT TOGETHER: How San Diego is working to end homelessness"The Lucky Duck Foundation is honored to work with our generous donor to establish a results-oriented, best-in-class strategy for reducing homelessness," said Stephanie Kilkenny, the foundation's co-founder and president.
