SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Health officials Wednesday confirmed the first influenza- related death of the 2019/2020 flu season in San Diego County.The county's Health and Human Services Agency reported that a 74-year- old Chula Vista man died Aug. 15 due to complications from Influenza B. The man, whose name was withheld, also had additional medical issues, according to county health officials.The county tracks flu activity year-round during each flu season, which corresponds with the county's fiscal year from July 1 to June 30. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist suffered serious injuries Thursday morning when the person's vehicle crashed into a wall on an Interstate 8 transition ramp in the Mission Valley area.The crash was reported around 1:15 a.m. on the I-8 west transition ramp to northbound state Route 163, according to a California Highway Patrol incident log.CHP officers responded to the scene and found a vehicle had crashed into a wall, leaving it with major front end damage, according to the incident log. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who fired a pellet gun at Navy SEAL instructors and trainees conducting a nighttime training exercise near Liberty Station was sentenced on Thursday to a year in jail.Scott Douglass Weaver, 48, pleaded guilty last month to making an attempted threat on a witness and brandishing a replica firearm.Because of credit for time already served, Weaver will spend about 80 more days in local custody before being released, authorities said.Dispatchers received a report of a man shooting at Navy officers shortly before 10:45 p.m. on July 23 in the 2500 block of Laning Road and Weaver was arrested. No military personnel were injured, according to the Navy.Police did not say if Weaver had a motive for firing at the SEALs or if he was even aware of who he was shooting at.In light of the shooting, the Naval Special Warfare Command said it would evaluate its training procedures. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Officers found a man fatally wounded inside a vehicle in the Bay Terraces community of San Diego, a police lieutenant said Saturday.Officers discovered the vehicle off the road with no other vehicles around and it did not appear to have been involved in a traffic crash, San Diego Police Lt. Paul Conley said.Officers dispatched to the location a little before midnight in the 7000 block of Paradise Valley Road walked up to the vehicle and discovered a man behind the wheel suffering from a gunshot to the upper body, Conley said.Paramedics rushed the man to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries, he said.The San Diego Police Department's Homicide Unit asked anyone with information regarding the shooting to call them at 619-531-2293. 775

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Former San Diego City Councilman and Reform California Chairman Carl DeMaio announced his intent Monday to enter the race for the only Republican-held congressional seat in San Diego County. In a statement announcing his candidacy for the 50th Congressional District seat, DeMaio framed the decision to run as one of ``fight or flight.'' He also lambasted the state's Democratic dominance, arguing the state has shifted to the left in an untenable way. ``Too many Californians are fleeing our state because of the extreme socialist agenda being imposed on us by Democrat politicians, but I refuse to flee: I choose to stand and fight,'' DeMaio said. ``In California, voters have mostly only been given two choices: socialists or ineffective cowards.'' The 50th District seat is currently represented by Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Alpine, who was indicted last August, along with his wife, on five dozen criminal charges, including conspiracy, wire fraud and record falsification, for allegedly misusing campaign funds. Margaret Hunter has since pleaded guilty to conspiracy and is cooperating with prosecutors. Her husband maintains his innocence. Hunter won a sixth term last November, defeating Democratic candidate Ammar Campa-Najjar with 51.7% of the vote. With rumors of a possible resignation swirling, a cluster of Republican politicians have announced plans to run for the seat in the event Hunter foregoes a run or cannot legally run in 2020.
