SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two women are launching a new nonprofit, Black San Diego, to bolster Black-owned businesses locally. It started at a kitchen table over chips and salsa four years ago. Sheri Jones, a real estate broker, and physical education teacher Tinicia Smith wanted to create a hub for Black-owned businesses in San Diego. They created a Facebook group called Black San Diego and now they're more than 34,000 members strong."For the last four years we've been able to collect data and what we realize is that business owners haven't been able to sustain because they don't have the tools," Jones said. She first noticed the issue when she was running her real estate business and went to a conference. She said she was the one Black person there and it was uncomfortable."I knew when I was having trouble, others must be too," Jones said. This week, Black San Diego became official, registered through the government and they're excited to plan workshops to offer those tools to the community. Jones described the workshop as, "an 8-week course where they can go through and get business basics, book keeping, business taxes, really how to formulate their corporation."Newly Appointed Board Member and CEO of Growth 1031 Lance Growth said these workshops are crucial for black-owned businesses like his."I stumbled into my position.. I made so many mistakes and I just had to sit down and learn from those mistakes," he said. "I'm going to send my operations lady, and ask her to take some extra notes on accounting, on marketing, on filing correctly, but it's a really beneficial tool."The workshop costs 0 per business and the nonprofit is launching a donation campaign to sponsor local Black-owned businesses."If the dollar circulates in the Black community then we can unite and produce generational wealth and that's what we're here to do," Smith said. They hope to bring members of their community out and help them elevate their business, "they don't want to step in the front, not get criticized, not get caught up in the chaos. We've been working smartly in the back, building our companies and now we don't have the luxury to sit in the dark anymore."If you would like to donate to Black San Diego please click here. 2240

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- After a rise in COVID- 19 cases, the governor closed many indoor activities, including places of worship. Churches around the county were forced to make changes to their services, but some embrace the new scenery.Sunday morning mass was held outdoors for parishioners at Saint Agnes Catholic Church. Members brought their beach chairs to worship in the church’s parking lot.“I love being able to see people here, gathered together, and worship together,” says Father Bill Marquis. The changes came after the governor’s announcement to stop indoor activities due to the rise in COVID-19 cases across the state. San Diego county is one a few dozen on the state’s watchlist.Saint Agnes Catholic Church says it is still offering virtual services, but it was the members who requested to have the “beach chair mass” on Sunday morning.“Parishioners asked me if we were going to have mass on Sunday, I said we were going to live stream it,” says Father Marquis. “She says we would still like to have an outdoor mass on Sunday, if possible. I said why, and she said because we want to receive communion. That was the deciding factor for me.”As many churches around the county make changes to their services, some places of worship are working with city leaders to hold outdoor services. Poway officials approved a plan to share park space with places of worship and fitness centers. The City of El Cajon is looking into a similar idea. 1452

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two men died after authorities said they jumped from a bridge following a car crash on a Carmel Valley freeway. It's the fourth incident where someone has died after falling off of a San Diego area bridge in a little more than a year.In April Team 10 spoke to Gwendolyn Sneed. Her partner of 20 years, Bob Bruno, died in a tragic incident at the Pine Valley Bridge.Bruno died, not in the accident on the bridge, but while trying to help a family in need. He'd seen a vehicle stopped on the side of the bridge and pulled over to help. Sneed said a family with a baby was stranded. Bruno was in the process of helping move the baby seat when a Ford F-150 pickup truck drove over a patch of ice and barreled toward Bruno.RELATED: 2 dead, 2 teen girls injured after jump from San Diego bridge following car crashBruno jumped out of the way to avoid being hit, but instead of landing on solid ground, he hopped over the side of the bridge guardrail and fell into the canyon below."I think Caltrans just needs to take a look at what the safety measures could be, lighting, higher guard rails, I don't know what that is, signage," Sneed said at the time. While Bruno's incident is tragic, Team 10 discovered two other unrelated incidents where people lost their lives falling off of San Diego-area bridges in the span on a year.In September 2018, Caltrans Highway Maintenance Lead Worker William Casdorph fell while he and his crew were doing maintenance work on the southbound State Route 163 overcross to southbound Interstate 805. He sustained significant injuries and died at the hospital. In April 2018, Martin Lapisch fell to his death from State Route 125 in the Bonita area after a crash in which his car struck and killed a deer on the freeway. Authorities said it appeared he jumped over the side of the bridge, possibly to get to a safe location, and didn't realize there was a 40-foot drop.In April, investigator Adam Racusin asked Caltrans about safety when it comes to bridges and overpasses."We are always looking for improvements of safety whether it's on our bridges or our regular highways," Caltrans Headquarters Division Chief of Maintenance Dennis Agar said at the time.Agar told 10News the agency always talks about incidents or close calls and how to prevent them. They even travel to other states to see how they handle safety."We make sure we do everything we can to address the concerns, especially with safety that brings up to our office and we try to address it statewide," he said in April. On Wednesday Team 10 asked Caltrans if there are any safety measures the agency is looking at to try and prevent this type of tragedy.Late Wednesday afternoon Caltrans Public Information Officer Edward Cartagena released a statement saying, "Caltrans extends its sympathies to the families of the deceased and hopes for a quick recovery for the injured. Although Caltrans will be looking into this incident, we want to allow the CHP to conduct and conclude their investigation."The California Highway Patrol says if your vehicle gets stuck on a bridge try and get to a safe location. If that's not possible, the best thing to do is stay in your vehicle with your seatbelt on and calls 911. 3226
