CHULA VISTA (KGTV) - After a series of fires, Chula Vista Police have begun the process of clearing people out of the Otay Mesa River Valley. Tuesday morning, members of the CVPD Homeless Outreach Team handed out vacate notices to people living in the area. Several fires have broken out in the river bed recently, requiring large responses from local fire agencies. Chula Vista Police said after people have been moved out, they will begin clearing brush. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV)— The Chula Vista Police department is investigating a home invasion robbery that happened Saturday night on the 1600 block of Claret Cup Drive.80-year-old Don Oder believes he may have had an encounter with one of the suspects.He told 10News he was unloading the bags from his late night shopping trip Saturday and saw a man walk into his garage.“He says 'I’m thirsty. Can I have some water?' So I got him a glass of water,” Oder said. That was around 10:30 p.m. at Oder's home near Camarena Elementary School.At the time, Oder did not know that the person who asked for water could have been a suspect in a home invasion robbery that happened moments prior. “I didn’t put two and two together right away,” Oder said. Chula Vista Police said someone fired a gun at a nearby condo on Claret Cup Drive around the same time.Two people entered and robbed the residents, then ran east. No one was hurt.Looking back now, Oder believes one of suspects may have been the man hiding in his garage.“Pretty obvious that he didn’t want to be seen,” Oder said. Oder describes him as a young, built, clean-cut man.He was surprised at the man’s get-away car.“He said, I’ve called an Uber and it’s going to be here in a few minutes.”Oder stayed with him for a few minutes until the man suddenly ran.Moments later, he and his grandson called police. The next morning, Oder’s son Tim was walking toward the crime scene.Tim Oder said he found a bundle of stuff next to a car along Exploration Falls Drive.“I pulled a hat out, walked a little further, and then I started pulling some gloves, and I thought, oh my God, these are white latex gloves!” Tim Oder said. The water cup and the bundle of items are now with Chula Vista Police, being processed for evidence. The Oders said the fact that one family had two run-ins with an unusual crime in a safe neighborhood is a crazy coincidence.“It seemed so strange, you know?” Oder said. Chula Vista Police said the suspects are still at large and asked the community to be vigilant. 2154

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A woman narrowly avoided being hit by a falling tree branch on a busy Chula Vista street Wednesday. A large branch fell from the eucalyptus tree along Telegraph Canyon Road about 3 p.m., crashing through the passenger side window of a woman’s car. Had a passenger been in the seat, the person would have been impaled, crews on the scene estimated. The woman pulled into the bike lane to assess the damage. She was able to walk independently but paramedics took her to the hospital for an assessment. No other cars were damaged, officials said. A neighbor told 10News they have seen other branches fall from the same tree. No one has been injured by the other incidents. 706

CINCINNATI -- A school bus crash Monday afternoon on Winton Road in Cincinnati left a 12-year-old girl in "critical" condition, flung a 2-year-old boy onto the road and resulted in the hospitalization of at least 18 other children, according to Lt. Steve Saunders.At least 11 children, including the seriously injured boy and girl, were taken away in ambulances Monday afternoon after the Pleasant Hill Academy bus and four other vehicles collided around 2:30 p.m. Nine others were taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center after their parents took them there to be checked out."I was devastated," parent Latisha McKelton said of the moment she heard about the crash. "I didn’t know what was wrong with my child. I just had to jump in the first moving vehicle and get here as fast as I could to my child. I didn't know if he was injured. I didn't know if he was going to be alive. I just didn't know. I was praying the whole way."According to a news release from Cincinnati police, a total of around 40 people were involved in the crash.Police said the bus was traveling southbound on Winton when a northbound vehicle driven by 23-year-old Robert Jett made an ill-fated attempt to pass the vehicle in front of him.Jett lost control of his car and struck another, this one driven by Jordan Ervin and transporting a pair of toddlers. Ervin's vehicle spun out of control and hit the bus; bus driver Tina Turnbow attempted to control her spinning vehicle and struck a fourth car, this one driven by LeAndre Acoff.Ervin was hospitalized in serious condition, as were his two passengers: The 2-year-old and a 1-year-old.The injured 12-year-old had been riding in the school bus at the time of the crash, according to the release. A district assistant superintendent went to Children's Hospital to help families there. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who are affected by this," Saunders said.He added charges were pending against Jett. 2010
