Fast food sandwich chain Subway expects to close about 500 stores in North America this year.But it's also hoping to open as many as 1,000 stores overseas.The company has 44,000 locations globally -- more than any other retailer. The town is the hometown of Encinitas resident of Rob LaBreche."It shows the neighbors are thinking about each other, and that is a positive thing," said LaBreche.Labreche decided to try to ring in some positivity in his own neighborhood. He posted his plans on the Nextdoor app and early this week, he and his kids got out some pots and pans at 7 p.m. and started making noise.That night, about five other neighbors joined them."To be honest, I kind of felt silly out there banging the pots and pans, but then when you're silent and feel other neighbors doing the same thing ... it makes you feel good and you know we're all in this together," said LaBreche.Since then, the idea has continued to resonate. He sent us video of his son ringing one of the family's newly-bought bells. On Thursday night - based on messages on Nextdoor - LaBreche believes more than 75 others joined in. FALLBROOK (KGTV) -- Deputies are investigating a suspicious death in Fallbrook Tuesday afternoon. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the death was reported at Live Oak Park Road and North Ridge Drive in Fallbrook at an unknown time. At this time, it’s unclear how the individual died and how the body was discovered. Deputies investigated, then called in homicide detectives to take charge of the case, Lt. FALLBROOK (CNS) - One person was killed on Interstate 15 near Fallbrook early Saturday morning in a single-vehicle crash that may have involved alcohol, authorities said.California Highway Patrol officers were first alerted to the crash shortly after 5 a.m. when a truck driver reported seeing a damaged car with an injured person inside stop momentarily at the truck scales in Rainbow before continuing on northbound I-15, CHP Officer Mark Latulippe said.Officers called hospitals in Temecula and Murrieta to check if there were any walk-in patients who could have been involved in the crash, and eventually were alerted that apparent victims had turned up at Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta, according to a CHP incident log.One passenger involved in the crash, identified as a 20-year-old man from Winchester, was pronounced dead at the hospital, Latulippe said. Another passenger, a 21-year-old Torrance man, sustained moderate injuries and the driver, a 23-year-old man also from Torrance, was not injured.The driver was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, Latulippe said.Officers were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and determined it occurred on northbound I-15 past state Route 76.Evidence suggested that the car struck a call box, lost control toward the center divider and may have returned to the right shoulder before continuing on the freeway, Latulippe said.Officers asked anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call the CHP Border Communications Center at (858) 637-3800. 1538

ESCONDIDO (CNS) - A Pauma Valley man accused of ambushing three San Diego County sheriff's deputies at his home in a rural area near Casino Pauma, sparking a nearly six-hour standoff in which he suffered a gunshot wound, was charged today with three counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm on a peace officer.Arraignment for 28-year-old Jose Nieto at Palomar Medical Center was postponed until Jan. 11 because he was deemed medically unfit for the proceeding while being treated for the gunshot wound he sustained during last Thursday's standoff.The complaint against Nieto includes allegations of personal use and discharge of a firearm. He faces 33 years and eight months in prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Michael Runyon.The standoff began around 4:15 p.m. on Dec. 20, when deputies Cory Crawford, Jared Muli, and John Avedesian went to a home in the 156-00 block of Adams Drive in response to a a 911 call from a man who said "he needed help and didn't feel safe in his home."As the three deputies approached the front door of the home, they were met with gunfire, said sheriff's Lt. Rich Williams.The deputies returned fire, established a perimeter around the home and called for backup, including a SWAT team. Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes and surrounding streets were shut down. The deputies were not injured.Authorities spend hours trying to establish communication with the gunman, but when that was unsuccessful, the SWAT team entered the home about 10 p.m. and found Nieto inside with a gunshot wound to his lower body, Williams said. 1598
