(WNEP/CNN) -- A Pennsylvania mother and a father are charged with endangering the welfare of their two children in Lackawanna County.Investigators say the two children were knowingly left alone in the town of Dunmore for nearly three days while the mother was in Florida.Nicole Sciortino, 30, and Vincent Licciardello, 30, were both arraigned Monday morning on those neglect charges.Sciortino told police that she didn't realize it was against the law to leave her two children home alone unsupervised for an extended period of time and added that she, "didn't think it was really that bad."According to court papers, on Wednesday, March 7, Dunmore police responded to the home on Monroe Avenue after receiving a report of children who had been left alone for weeks.When officers arrived, they found a 10 year old and an 11 year old home by themselves. Police say the place was in deplorable condition, with food, boxes, pills, and other trash on the floor. The thermostat read 58 degrees.Police were able to contact the mother of the two children, Nicole Sciortino. She first told them she wasn't far away, but later admitted to police that she was in Florida. She told investigators that the children's father, Vincent Licciardello, who lives elsewhere, was watching the kids.During the investigation, police found that on Monday, March 5, Licciardello dropped the kids off at their mother's house early in the morning. Over the next three days, while their mother was in Florida, he would occasionally stop by to drop food off for the unsupervised children.WNEP-TV spoke with a few people who work in the area, who were floored to hear about the accusations.At the time of the investigation, police say one child had missed 16 days of school, while the other had missed 26 days since the start of the school year."That hurts. I'm a mom of five kids. I couldn't imagine leaving my kids for 10 minutes without an adult supervisor," said Tamra Murphy. "Who's feeding them? Who's washing their clothes? Who's making sure their homework is done? That upsets me beyond it. That hurts me.""That's insane to me," said Kaylia Riley. "I mean, at the end of the day, I couldn't even leave my dogs for three days by themselves, let alone children, especially small children. It's just mind-blowing."Sciortino and Licciardello were both charged Monday with endangering the welfare of children. (KGTV) — Southern California police say they've arrested two people and seized 0,000 in electronics and gift cards in connection to a nationwide phone scam investigation.Fontana Police have arrested Ailing Lu, 25, of Los Angeles and Ji Hyun Lee, 25, of Gardena, over the scam they believe has affected hundreds of victims around the country.Investigators say a victim reported a cold call on Sept. 4 of a scammer impersonating an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) official. The scammer threatened to arrest the victim if they didn't pay them ,200 in Target gift cards.The victim eventually provided the gift cards to the caller and later reported the incident to police.Police tracked the redemption of the gift cards to a Los Angeles Target location, where they investigated surveillance videos of the transactions. Target reported a similar incident from Indiana University Police and investigators compared the two case videos and transactions. Police say they had enough evidence to identify and arrest Lu and Lee after they conducted surveillance on suspected locations and vehicles in Los Angeles.Police served search warrants on two locations as well, discovering about 0,000 in things like gaming systems and computer devices, gift cards, and gift cards from victims.Fontana Police warned the public to contact law enforcement if they receive a similar call and threatening requests. A Baltimore County, Maryland police officer was killed in the line of duty in Perry Hall, Maryland on Monday. According to Baltimore County Police, around 2 p.m. they received a call for a suspicious vehicle in the unit-block of Linwen Way. Police say the officer responded to the scene when she encountered a suspect or suspects. They say she suffered significant critical injuries and was later transported to Franklin Square Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 2:50 p.m.The officer was a 4-year veteran with the police force and was expecting an anniversary this July.Officials said there were multiple suspects involved but they are actively searching for at least one suspect.During a press conference, Cpl. Shawn Vinson said detectives determined that there was a house on Linwen Way that has damage to a patio door. The damage indicated that it may have been a burglary in progress.Baltimore County Police are searching for an armed suspect and they are expanding the scene. 1120
