SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Friday, San Diego Police responded to an urgent request to reform the department's de-escalation policy.A board appointed by the mayor has now voted on a request to add more explicit language to the policy on tactics and techniques for how officers are allowed to de-escalate in the field.“The time is now and we really need this for the City of San Diego,” said Attorney Maresa Talbert, Co-Chair for San Diegans for Justice and a member of the Coalition for Police Accountability and Transparency. 10News spoke to her on Friday after Thursday night's emergency virtual meeting of the Community Review Board on Police Practices.“We really need holistic policies in place that will both keep not only our residents safe but also law enforcement safe,” she added.Below is a statement from Sharmaine Moseley, Executive Director of the Community Review Board on Police Practices:"The Community Review Board on Police Practices (CRB) held a special meeting to discuss a recommendation they previously made for SDPD to adopt a de-escalation policy that models Baltimore PD’s de-escalation policy. At that meeting, the CRB discussed and unanimously agreed to add more explicit language to a policy that would require officers to use de-escalation techniques and tactics without the use of force when safe under the totality of the circumstances to do so. The CRB also listed factors for the officers to consider when a person is not complying and techniques and tactics officers can use for de-escalating situations. A revised letter with the CRB’s recommendations will be forwarded to Chief Nisleit early next week. At last night’s meeting, the CRB also discussed the many local protests and SDPD’s response to the protests. By a unanimous vote of 16-0, the CRB agreed to forward this item to its Policy Committee for the Committee to look at best practices for a policy recommendation to Chief Nisleit. The Policy Committee is planning to meet on Thursday, June 11 on MS Teams. This meeting will be open to the public on the City of San Diego’s YouTube channel and an agenda will be posted prior to the meeting."An SDPD spokesperson told 10News on Friday that the department wants to be clear that it does have a de-escalation policy incorporated into its use-of-force policy but the department is open to receiving any new recommendations from the board. 2381

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nestled off of Camino Del Rio West in the Midway District, the Body Shop sits between a Navis Pack and Ship site and the "Les Girls" adult entertainment club on Riley Street. The Body Shop, a strip club at 3776 Riley Street, welcomed customers for five decades before it closed last December. This week, Rock Church announced they'll be moving in. Rock Church has five campuses across San Diego County. They have a school and now, they have plans for the property in the Midway District. They told 10News the purchase is about more than repurposing a strip club - it's about transforming the neighborhood. "We thought it was a great idea because we know the pain that goes on in that building," said Miles McPherson, pastor at Rock Church. "Not just the women, but the men who go there and their families.”The church’s main campus on Rosecrans is roughly a mile and a half away from the new property. "We don’t know what we're going to do with the building, we just know what it won’t be used for," McPherson said. For decades, parents have explained to their kids why there's a huge sign that says 'nude girls' in their neighborhood, he said. Soon, it won't be necessary."It would be nice to put 'Rock Church' on top of that billboard, but that's another step," he said. "We’ll get to that. But you know the people in that community have been looking at that building for 50 years, and hopefully we can put something more positive in that building.”In addition to taking over the building, McPherson said the church plans to do outreach in the community. Nancy Sussman is no stranger to the courthouse. Usually, she’s representing her clients, but this time she’s defending herself against criminal charges that could send her to prison.Traffic backed up. Drivers snapping video of how the high speed chase ended. Police say Sussman finally stopped when they laid down spike strips. Still, they say she refused to come out of the car, eventually forcing them to smash out one of the windows.10News is learning new details about the woman behind the wheel of the white Mercedes. Sussman is a longtime medical malpractice attorney.RELATED: Woman arrested after leading police on chaseIn court Tuesday, she represented herself. “Are you an attorney,” the judge asked.The judge entered a not guilty plea on Sussman’s behalf. She’s charged with felony evading, driving with a suspended license and resisting arrest.Sussman tried to explain to the judge why she didn’t stop. “Regarding the chase, I was a victim of police brutality on October 28th.”According to a police report, the October 28 case involves Sussman and her neighbor, a Border Patrol agent. In that case, she’s charged with burglary, making criminal threats, vandalism and other charges.On December 30, police tried pulling her over on that warrant, finally arresting her after that chase on I-5.If convicted on the charges connected to the chase, Sussman faces more than six years in prison. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One Comic-Con tradition for many has been donating blood every year through the San Diego Blood Bank.While the convention isn't happening in person, locals can still participate in the yearly blood drive and score some SDCC swag while they're at it.San Diego Blood Bank is extending its annual Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive until Aug. 18 at any blood bank center or mobile donation drive. Donors will also receive a limited-edition Marvel Black Widow t-shirt while supplies last — a traditional reward for donors every Comic-Con.For the last 43 years, the blood bank says the drive has seen more than 25,000 pints of blood donated, impacting more than 75,000 lives.The drive is even more important this year as the blood bank faces a shortage amid the pandemic. Last month, the center said it's experiencing a critically low blood supply and all blood types are needed. Summer is usually a challenging time, according to the blood bank, strained even more without schools being open, businesses hosting drives, and as local hospitals continue surgeries delayed due to the pandemic.The blood bank is also testing all blood donations for coronavirus antibodies through the end of July. To be eligible to donate blood, you must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 114 pounds, and be in generally good health. Appointments must be made through the blood bank here. 1393
