The event allowed riders of all abilities to tour the 25 miles of the Bayshore Bikeway and the Coronado Bay Bridge. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County leaders Monday announced proposals that would crack down on vaping amid vaping-related illness and death throughout the U.S. At the Monday news conference, County Supervisors Dianne Jacob and Nathan Fletcher proposed a ban on the sale and distribution of flavored tobacco products and e-cigarettes. The recommendations will come to go to the board on October 15 and, if the board follows up with approval, the rules would take effect in the county’s unincorporated area. “Vaping-related illnesses are a grave concern and we must take local action to address this fast-growing public health crisis,” said Jacob, chairwoman of the Board of Supervisors.“Teenagers and young adults have been the hardest hit, and we must stand up to vaping manufacturers that are preying on them for profit.”So far across the U.S., there have been more than 800 confirmed illnesses tied to vaping and 13 deaths. The news conference comes after health officials around the country advise people to refrain from vaping as investigations into the cause of the illnesses and deaths continue. “E-cigarettes, and in particular the flavored products, are erasing years of progress in reducing teens’ use of tobacco and nicotine,” said Supervisor Fletcher.In San Diego County, there have been 22 confirmed probable vaping-related illness cases. Teenagers and young adults make up about half of those hospitalized as a result of e-cigarette use, according to the state Department of Public Health. 1513

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County officials are once again sounding the alarm, asking San Diegans to follow all health guidelines to slow the spread of COVID-19.On Wednesday, local leaders held a press conference to discuss the county's latest numbers and their placement on the state's colored tier system. The county stayed in the red tier, but was dangerously close to slipping into the more restrictive purple tier. In fact, County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said San Diego County was only two cases away from the purple tier."Yesterday we dodged a bullet. We could not have gotten any closer without tripping into the purple tier," County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said at Wednesday's press conference. "But we don't want to live or die on the tiers by how many tests we've done."The county's unadjusted case rate is 7.7, while the adjusted rate is 7.0. Officials said the county's testing efforts allowed for that adjusted number. The county's health equity metric also improved, going down from 5.7% to 5.5%; the metric looks at the most undeserved, impacted communities.On Wednesday, health officials reported 263 new COVID-19 infections and six additional deaths, raising the region's cumulative totals to 53,263 cases and 863 fatalities.Six new community outbreaks were also reported Wednesday, two in businesses, two in restaurants, one in a restaurant/bar setting and one in a healthcare setting. In the past seven days, 32 community outbreaks were confirmed, well above the trigger of seven or more in a week's time.A community outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the past 14 days.Wooten said the best way to keep cases down is to continue following all health guidelines in place, like wearing a mask, staying home if you're sick, social distancing and avoiding indoor gatherings. The county is also looking ahead to Election Day, urging San Diegans to vote via mail-in ballot, but also reassuring in-person voters that it will be safe to cast a ballot. County Registrar of Voters Michael Vu is asking all in-person voters to wear a mask and be patient on Election Day. Vu said all 4,500 election workers will undergo two days of training before the election so they can handle sanitization procedures and how to direct crowds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police officers were forced to abandon a pursuit Tuesday after learning a child was in the suspect's vehicle.The pursuit began after the suspect rear-ended an SDPD vehicle along 17th Street downtown around 1 p.m., according to police. The officer in the vehicle hit was fine.Police pursued the driver but terminated the pursuit after learning a child was in the car.SDPD ran the suspect's plates and found the vehicle was also stolen. During the pursuit, the suspect's vehicle collided with at least one other vehicle - losing the front right tire.No injuries were reported.The vehicle was abandoned in the 1300 block of Angelus Ave. in Lemon Grove. Police have yet to locate the suspect.The owner of the vehicle told 10News the car was stolen from Lakeside two days ago. He said he and his 12-year-old son worked on the vehicle as a project together. 943

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer has identified a park-and-ride lot in Scripps Ranch as a perfect place for new affordable housing, but neighboring businesses worry the plan will drive away their customers."You solve one problem and create ten new ones. There’s seven businesses that are going to suffer," said Yannis Pihas, owner of Yanni's Bar & Grill.Pihas says his customers, as well as visitors to the two hotels in the center, frequently use the park-and-ride because there is limited parking otherwise. While he's attempted to speak with city leaders about his concerns, so far he says he has not been given any indication that the housing project will include parking that the businesses can use.ABC 10News reached out to the city. A spokesperson says the project is still in the early process of planning and that details on potential parking have yet to be worked out. The spokesperson also said the public can always bring concerns to the area's planning board and that there will be more opportunities for public input once the plan is prepared.In a statement, Mayor Faulconer said, "There is a great need in our community for housing that gives folks a real chance to have a place of their own, but also the support system they need to stay housed. This public-private partnership will help transform these vacant City-owned properties into opportunities that will change the lives of so many of our fellow San Diegans for the better."The plan is expected to be finalized and brought to the City Council for a vote in 2021. 1566
