SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con accused of abducting and sexually assaulting a woman in two separate locations before letting her out of his truck in Logan Heights pleaded not guilty today to felony charges, including rape and sexual penetration by force.Phillip Terrel McLeod, 47, who has a criminal record that includes a similar kidnapping case from 2002, faces 160 years to life in prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Patrick Espinoza, McLeod was ordered held on million bail.The prosecutor said the 27-year-old alleged victim in the current case was initially attacked on Delta Street near Balboa Elementary School about 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 20.Espinoza alleged that McLeod pulled up and threatened to use a Taser on the woman, then forced her into his white pickup truck and drove her to an area near 39th Street and Broadway in Mount Hope, where she was sexually assaulted.The prosecutor said the victim fought back and McLeod drove her to Logan Heights, where he allegedly tried to rape her again. The victim pleaded with McLeod to let her go, and he did so near 32nd Street and National Avenue, Espinoza said.McLeod -- who is also charged with kidnapping for rape, attempted rape, assault with intent to commit rape, assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury and a misdemeanor count of resisting an officer -- was arrested Dec. 29.He will be back in court Jan. 15 for a readiness conference and the following day for a preliminary hearing. 1481

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Health officials announced Tuesday that students at three high schools in San Diego County have tested positive for mumps and may have exposed others to the contagious virus in the last two weeks.One person at each of the campuses -- High Tech High School International, La Jolla High School and San Pasqual High School -- tested positive for the virus, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, which did not specify whether the patients were students or staffers.Students and faculty at the three schools are being advised to be aware of possible mumps symptoms, which can include a fever, headache, earache and salivary gland inflammation.The exposures happened during normal school hours on Oct. 21-22 at High Tech High; Oct. 21-23, 25 and 28 at La Jolla High; and at San Pasqual High on Oct. 17-18 and 21-24.Symptoms can show between 12 and 25 days after exposure, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency."We are working closely with school officials to inform the school communities about the symptoms of mumps and vaccine recommendations," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Because there is no prevention after exposure for mumps, people should be watching for symptoms and make sure they have all the recommended doses of measles, mumps and rubella immunizations."County health officials have received reports of 47 mumps cases this year, the most in 25 years. Mumps cases statewide, nationwide and in Baja California are also outpacing the number of reported cases at this time last year.The viral disease is passed through coughing, sneezing or close contact. Severe complications are often rare but can include meningitis, permanent hearing loss, a decrease in fertility and fetal loss for pregnant women in their first trimester. Most mumps patients recover without incident.Health officials encouraged all residents to receive the measles-mumps- rubella vaccine to protect against developing the illnesses. The vaccine is recommended in two doses at 12 to 15 months old and at 4 to 6 years old. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who allegedly posed as a maintenance worker in order to burglarize residences across San Diego County was charged Thursday with burglary and other felonies that could have him facing more than 300 years in prison.Corey Henson, 45, is suspected in burglaries in San Diego, La Mesa, El Cajon, Vista and San Ysidro that occurred between August of last year and this February.Deputy District Attorney Daniel Shim said Henson could face 339 years and four months to life if convicted of all counts, due to numerous prior convictions, which include burglary and assault with a deadly weapon. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - All administrative offices in San Diego will be closed Thursday for the Thanksgiving Day holiday, while public transportation around the county will largely run on limited Sunday schedules.The City of San Diego's Development Services Department will provide limited services on Friday.Curbside trash, recyclables and yard waste will not be collected Thursday for customers served by the city's Environmental Services Department. Thursday's normally scheduled collection will occur on Friday, and Friday's collection will occur on Saturday. Residents in other cities should check with their waste hauler for holiday service schedules.The Miramar Landfill will be closed Thursday.Torrey Pines, Mission Bay and Balboa Park golf courses will be open until 3 p.m. Holiday rates will apply. All San Diego skate parks will be open.All public buildings in Balboa Park will be closed, including the Balboa Park Activity Center, Botanical Building, Casa del Prado, Municipal Gym and War Memorial Building.
