CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) – It opened with much fanfare back in September, but after a two week period of cancellations February, Carlsbad-based airline, Cal Jet was still dealing with setbacks in early March.“I can’t say that it didn’t [suffer],” said Cal Jet’s President, George Wozniak of their reputation.On Friday, he stood on the tarmac at McClellan-Palomar Airport, personally apologizing to travelers boarding a plane at 4:15 p.m. that had been originally scheduled to leave at 9 a.m.Wozniak said the passengers had been notified of the delay earlier in the day. The plane had experienced mechanical problems the night before and had to fly to Arizona last night for repairs.The delays come after the airline canceled nearly two weeks of flights, beginning just before President’s Day weekend.Wozniak said the plane they use, which is owned by Elite Air, had also been booked by NCAA basketball teams. “It was either a crew or aircraft scheduling problem, where if they had one pilot get ill and not show up, it could throw the whole thing off,” described Wozniak.They could theoretically still use it, but rather than risk more abrupt cancellations, he decided to clear the schedule until they could get the plane back full time.“It was not an easy decision to make,” said Wozniak.Cal Jet’s Yelp page says why. CAMP PENDLETON (KGTV) - Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is balancing mitigating risk of exposure to the coronavirus with training to keep Marines ready for deployment."Changes of command are smaller, retirements are smaller," Col. Jeff Holt, Deputy Commander for Marine Corps Installations West, Camp Pendleton, said.At changes of command, Marines are masked and six feet apart, and large formations are no more."We have mitigation measures to protect our people but life's not perfect, life gets in the way. We have to overcome those obstacles and challenges because we have a greater mission and that is to our nation," Col. Holt said.The Marines take pride in the 'First to Fight' motto. The 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) is deployed in Jordan and the 15th MEU is preparing to deploy. Coronavirus is not creating a delay."There are choices that are made to protect the people but also to replicate what we would face in combat because the requirements of the Marine Corps do not stop," Co. Holt said Marines are training the way they would fight overseas.Units are quarantined for two weeks before and after deployment to ensure everyone is healthy. When units are training they are isolating, they do not go home each night. Marines are asked health screening questions and given temperature checks.It's not just training that has changed, the commissary and thrift store have a strict cleaning schedule and safety barriers just like San Diego's grocery stores.Col. Holt said they've been learning from San Diego and took notes, implementing strategies used at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar when flights from Wuhan, China arrived. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- As a way to deal with San Diego’s growing roadway congestion, more communities are installing mini-roundabouts to slow speeding drivers. Yet some neighbors in North County are calling them death traps.If you take a drive down Cassia Road in Carlsbad, you’ll see mini-roundabouts, also known as mini-circles, that are causing a big fuss. Fire Captain Nick Valenzuela lives in the neighboring community. “I've come down [to the road] because I’ve heard traffic accidents from my house and come down and helped people,” he tells us.“I've seen the aftermath of at least two accidents,” adds neighbor Mark Bua, who is also a police officer. Bua says the mini-circles are so small that drivers blow right past them without yielding for oncoming traffic. He shared photos of debris from some of the collisions.The mini-circles on Cassia Road were installed at the end of 2016 as a way to slow traffic in bustling North County.Mini-circles have had great success in other booming cities like Seattle, which now has more than 1,000 of them with a 90% reduction in collisions.Dan Burden is a renowned traffic expert. He was once named one of the most important civic innovators in the world, according to TIME Magazine. We asked Burden to review photos of the Carlsbad mini-circles. “[They’ve] got some design issues,” he told us. “In this case the circle is so small and there's no consequence in getting close to it. They're designed in a way that a motorist could go much too fast,” he adds.Burden is a fan of mini-circles, if they're done right. He says they're easier on cars than speed bumps and create better flow than stop signs. "They slow traffic down to 15 to 20 miles per hour upon entry,” he adds.However, Carlsbad neighbors claim they’re playing chicken with speeding drivers and lives are at risk.10News submitted a request with the City of Carlsbad to review the number of recent collisions Cassia Road. According to reported incidents, collisions actually appear to have dropped since the mini-circles were installed.Nearby Leucadia is hoping to soon install mini-circles along the congested North Coast Highway 101. A few years ago, the mini-circles were installed in the Bird Rock community of La Jolla, where motorists are now driving half as fast as they used to. On Harbinson Avenue in La Mesa, the circles were removed a few years after neighbors complained about safety concerns.The City of Carlsbad is reportedly monitoring and making refinements to the mini-circles on Cassia Road, but is aware of residents’ concerns and will consider making more changes in the upcoming months.“This is Carlsbad. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police have identified the suspects who reportedly attacked a Carlsbad woman, stabbing her to death during an attempted burglary Monday morning. According to police, Ian Bushee, 37, and Malissa James, 26, who are both transients, were arrested on the 4800 block of Park Drive Monday. Both are on probation in San Bernardino for residential burglary. Police say Bushee was arrested for homicide, burglary, conspiracy, auto theft and accessory after the fact. James was arrested for homicide, burglary, conspiracy and auto theft. “The Police Department shares the communities’ concern over such a tragic incident,” Police Chief Neil Gallucci said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family.”The incident was reported at around 12:30 a.m. at a home in the 1800 block of Outrigger Lane, just north of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon, according to Carlsbad police.MUST-READ: Victims in deadly paragliding accident at Torrey Pines Gliderport identifiedPolice said the suspects broke into the home, and during the break-in, a woman in the house was stabbed.
