BEIJING, May 7 (Xinhua) -- China's policy of actively attracting foreign investment will not change, said vice minister of commerce Ma Xiuhong Friday.The Ministry of Commerce will keep working to maintain a good investment environment for foreign companies, said Ma during a discussion with multinational firms."The ministry will strengthen its communication with multinational corporations and foreign enterprises," she said.China could provide new opportunities for foreign investors as the country is in a process of modernization, urbanization and transformation of its economic development pattern, said Ma.She hoped that while achieving their own development goals, foreign enterprises could play a larger role in China's pursuit of scientific innovation, industrial upgrading, and more balanced regional economic development.Representatives from 64 multinational corporations and four foreign chambers of commerce participated in the discussion. They were joined by officials from a number of Chinese government departments, including the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Industry and Information.Foreign direct investment to China increased 7.7 percent year on year to 23.44 billion U.S. dollars in the first quarter.

BEIJING, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has urged reconstruction authorities to protect the fragile ecosystem and improve living conditions during their work in the quake-hit Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.Hui was speaking at a meeting held by the State Council on Friday in Beijing to evaluate a report on the reconstruction's impact on resources and the environment.A 7.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Yushu in the Himalayan northwest Qinghai Province on April 14, leaving at least 2,200 deaths.The State Council, or Cabinet, approved the report at the meeting and Hui said reconstruction planners should consider the impact of their projects on the ecosystem.The epicenter of the devastating quake was at the headwaters of three major rivers -- the Yangtze, the Yellow and the Lancang rivers -- that run through China and neighboring countries.The clearing of debris, selection of sites for new towns and development of other industries in the quake area should all prioritize environmental protection, and natural forests as well as vegetative cover should be protected and restored, Hui said.The government has pledged to finish reconstruction work within three years.

XINING, April 26 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin visited quake survivors and rescuers during a trip to the quake-hit Yushu in northwest China's Qinghai Province on Monday."The government will go all out to rebuild the quake zone," Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, told villagers from Yushu County, where the epicenter lies.Jia also met with representatives of monks who joined the rescue. XIANGNING, Shanxi, March 31 (Xinhua) -- The water level dropped Tuesday in a flooded coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province, where 153 people were trapped, as rescue efforts entered the third day.But there was still no communication with the trapped although almost 1,000 rescuers have been racing the clock to pump out water and trying to reach them.By 6 p.m. Tuesday, the water level in the shaft had dropped by 15 cm, and a total of 15,000 cubic meters of water had been pumped out of the pit, the rescue headquarters said late Tuesday.Rescuers send drainage pipes down to the shaft at the site of the flooding accident of Wangjialing Coal Mine, sitting astride Xiangning County of Linfen City and Hejin City of Yuncheng City, north China's Shanxi Province, on March 30, 2010.Currently, six pumps are being used to pump up to 645 cubic meters of water per hour.Altogether 261 workers were in the pit of Wangjialing Coal Mine, which was under construction, when underground water gushed in at about 1:40 p.m. Sunday. Although 108 were lifted safely to the ground, 153 others were trapped in the shaft.The mine, which straddles Xiangning County, of Linfen City, and Hejin City, of Yuncheng City, covers about 180 square kilometers.The mining zone was estimated to have more than 2.3 billion tonnes of coal reserves, including 1.04 billion tonnes of proven reserves, according to the company's official website.The mine, affiliated with the state-owned Huajin Coking Coal Co. Ltd., is a major project approved by the provincial government. It is expected to produce 6 million tonnes of coal annually once in operation.
