SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several students fighting over a BB gun at a Logan Heights middle school accidentally shot a fellow classmate Tuesday. The incident began when a boy told a fellow student he brought a BB gun to Memorial Preparatory for Scholars and Athletes. The two boys began fighting when the student told his classmate he didn't want to show him the BB gun. During the fight, police say the BB gun went off, shooting a 12-year-old girl in the temple. The student was treated at the school but didn't need to be taken to the hospital. The girl reportedly had a large welt on her head from the incident. At this time, the school hasn't said whether or not they'll be taking disciplinary action against the students.  759

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several changes are being introduced to how Assembly Bill 5 applies to freelance writers and photographers.Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez announced the changes Thursday to address feedback from freelance writers and journalists over the effects of AB 5.“Having heard additional feedback from a variety of freelance writers, photographers and journalists, we are making changes to Assembly Bill 5 that accommodate their needs and still provide protections from misclassification,” Assemblywoman Gonzalez said.RELATED: Proposed bill would exempt musicians from AB 5The changes will remove the cap on the number of submissions that a freelancer writer, photographer, or editor can submit to one hiring entity before they must be classified as an employee. Hiring entities must not use a contractor to replace an employee position as well.When contractors provide services, their contract must specify the rate of their pay, when they receive payment, and the individual's intellectual property rights to the work submitted. The changes also say a freelancer can work for more than one hiring entity and cannot primarily perform their work at an entity's location.RELATED: Concerns raised as California's independent contractor law is set to take effectAB 5 was signed into law last year, requiring companies, including tech giants like Uber and Lyft, to classify their independent contractors as employees. And it's even more evident when looking at a new ranking from the Brewers Association.The non-profit trade group that represents small and craft breweries recently released its annual list of top brewers in the U.S., based on beer sales. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some San Diegans are pushing back against the county’s order to wear face coverings in public.The face coverings requirement in San Diego County -- prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic -- has been in effect since early May, but in other California counties, rules are starting to change.Last week, Orange County officials decided to roll back their mandate and only “strongly recommended” that masks be worn in public settings.Riverside and San Bernardino counties have also relaxed their respective mask mandates.“It's a hard thing to draw the lines. There’s human nature, there’s a concern about such a ramp-up of state enforcement of things,” said University of St. Thomas Law School Professor Robert Kahn.Kahn, an expert in mask law and history, said one of the biggest issues is people are not used to taking orders from health officials.That feeling is evident in social media postings on pages like Reopen San Diego on Facebook, where there is a growing push to rescind San Diego’s mask mandate.Many health officials still agree that face coverings can block transmission of the respiratory droplets released by people when breathing or talking.During a Monday press briefing, San Diego County Public Health Officer Wilma Wooten said, “Every jurisdiction is different, but San Diego will continue mandatory face coverings.”Kahn said no matter what rules or laws government might put in place, people will ultimately have to abide by what businesses want their customers to do.“Businesses will make their decision; private business, free enterprise understands this,” he said.Orange County’s public health officer resigned rather than remove the county’s mask order. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Since they got the call for help a week ago, San Diego Border Dreamers has been working around the clock to set up an emergency medical clinic in Tijuana.Board Director Milad Torabi says he's getting word migrants have conditions including fevers, rashes, blisters and bad sunburns. On a Go Fund Me, they're raising money for basic medical, first aid, and sanitary supplies.The advocacy group is partnering with two UC San Diego organizations which specialize in this area: Flying Samaritans and the International Health Collective.They're accepting monetary donations as well as medical supplies.San Diego Border Dreamers is also seeking doctors, nurses, medical students, acupuncturists, physical therapists and medical translators willing to volunteer their time. 799
