Arizona Governor Doug Ducey announced during a news conference Wednesday that local governments now have the ability, if they so choose, to mandate masks in their cities.The move comes as healthcare workers and many city leaders across the state called for the governor to make it a statewide requirement to wear masks in public to prevent the spread of coronavirus.Ducey said during the press conference that the amount of positive cases and the percentage of positive cases per test varies greatly by city and county across the state. Therefore, he says he is choosing to leave it up to local governments whether or not to mandate masks.Ducey did not clarify how exactly each local government could implement a mandate on masks, but Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego tweeted that the Phoenix City Council would vote on a mandate on the upcoming agenda.When asked about how the use of masks would be enforced, Ducey said that would be left up to the mayors to decide.Ducey also announced during the press conference that 300 National Guard members will be called upon to help with contact tracing across the state.A spokesman for the governor has said, "addressing COVID-19 remains our highest priority. An Ohio state legislator is urging people not to get tested for COVID-19.Republican State Rep. Nino Vitale made the request on his state representative Facebook page Tuesday after the state announced that counties determined to be "high-risk" for COVID-19 would require face coverings be worn in public."Are you tired of living in a dictatorship yet?" Vitale said. "This is what happens when people go crazy and get tested. An 11th child has died and 23 additional children have become sick in connection with an adenovirus outbreak at a New Jersey health care facility, the state's Department of Health announced Friday.The children have weakened immune systems and other serious medical issues, and many of them require assistance to breathe and function. They became sick at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, New Jersey.An ongoing investigation has revealed that not being able to separate the sick from those without symptoms -- in part due to "limitations in the facilities" -- is among the "major reasons for the outbreak being as severe as it has been," Dr. Shereef Elnahal, commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Health, said Friday.But after deaths and hospitalizations, the facility now has enough space to separate them."Up until this week, it has not been possible to completely separate those patients," Elnahal said. "But now, due to decreasing census at the facility, it is."On Thursday, health officials requested help separating those who are sick, putting out a statewide call for volunteers from New Jersey Medical Reserve Corps. He was looking to renew his business license but the computers are still down."I commuted all this way to get it, and now I've got to come back tomorrow or the day after," said Woodard.On the other hand, Doug Lueder walked out a happy man after his application to have a commercial property subdivided was handled."I had to turn in an application last week just before the cyberattack happened, so I got in and got out," said Lueder.
