BEIJING, March 8 (Xinhua) -- China's Minister of Science and Technology Wan Gang said here on Monday a lot of new and high technologies will be applied to the Shanghai World Expo, which is designed to highlight the theme of "Better City, Better Life" with the latest technologies.Clean energy will be used to supply electricity for the six-month exposition beginning May 1, said the minister at a press conference on the sidelines of the annual session of the country's top advisory body, the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).The 5.8-square kilometer exposition site will become the venue for the largest-scale solar energy application project as 4.6-megawatt solar power generators will be put into operation, said Wan, who is also vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee. Wan Gang, vice-chairperson of the 11th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), speaks during a news conference held by the Third Session of the 11th National Committee of the CPPCC on the 2010 Shanghai World Expo in Beijing, capital of China, March 8, 2010. A group of 34 3-megawatt wind power generating units are under construction and will supply clean energy for the event."After the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the Shanghai Expo will continue to have a zero-emission of vehicles in the expo site with the use of various kinds of electricity-driven cars," said Wan.In the landmark four pavilions along the Central Axis of the expo site, LED lamps account for more than 80 percent of the lighting system, the minister said, adding that devices have been installed in the four permanent buildings to recover all rainwater. The minister, who was born in Shanghai in 1952, said he hoped the high technologies to be showed and applied during the exposition could be applied to the daily life of every one and help Shanghai boost industrial development and restructuring."As science workers, we will take the exposition as a good opportunity to learn the R&D ideas of other countries and the latest technologies from them," he said.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, in a recent bold speech here, criticized China's policies on Internet administration and insinuated that China restricts Internet freedom.Clinton's statement, which were inconsistent with the facts, is clearly yet another example of the double standards that the United States applies. As is widely recognized, freedom is always relative, and such is also the case with Internet freedom. Through years of development, the Internet has been closely connected with people, bringing both convenience and threats. The threats include Internet-based crimes and pornography. It is common practice for countries, including the United States, to take necessary measures to administer the Internet according to their own laws and regulations. The Internet is also restricted in the United States when it comes to information concerning terrorism, porn, racial discrimination and other threats to society.Shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the U.S. Congress approved the Patriot Act to grant its security agencies the right to search telephone and e-mail communications in the name of anti-terrorism. The move aroused a great deal of controversy far and wide.U.S. authorities have also taken measures, such as installing supervision software and imposing grave punishments, to curb Internet child porn, a serious crime in the country. The United States often gossips about other countries' policies on administering the Internet, but at the same time it takes similar measures to minimize the spread of illegal information. That shows that the United States takes a strict line with other countries, but not with itself.Clinton in her speech also talked of Google's threat to quit China due to what the company said were "cyber attacks of varying degrees on a regular basis."As a matter of fact, the U.S. was the first country to introduce the concept of cyber warfare and then put it into practice. The country also developed a new type of troops -- cyber troops. The Pentagon has adopted several measures to beef up the military's cyber warfare capacity, according to American media reports last year. In June, Defense Secretary Robert Gates issued an order to establish a new military cyber command dedicated to coordinating the Pentagon's efforts to defend its networks and conduct cyber warfare. The command was expected to be fully operational by October this year. So, it is quite hypocritical to point one's finger at others without proper justification while managing to strengthen one's own cyber warfare capacity.Necessary regulation of the Internet is a consensus of the entire international community for the sake of healthy development of the Internet. No responsible country takes a laissez-faire attitude towards the use of the Internet. It is an operational norm observable by all foreign-funded enterprises to respect and comply with laws and regulations as well as public interests and the cultural tradition of the host country.Noting that most countries exert some sort of control over information,Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said Friday his company must comply with the laws and customs of any country where it does business. The U.S. move to make Internet freedom an issue just indicates its continued application of double standards. People just wish that the United States will respect facts and treat others equally. It is not acceptable for someone to assume for themselves the high moral ground and arbitrarily make baseless charges against others.

Jinan met its medium and short-distance Spring Festival travel peak on Wednesday with most of the travelers going by long-distance buses to visit their relatives. The ministry predicts the travel peak days will probably be Feb. 19 and 20, as more and more passengers start their return trip. YAOUNDE, March 23 (Xinhua) -- China and Cameroon said on Tuesday that they would make joint efforts to step up their parliamentary ties. The pledge came out of the hour-long talks between China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin and President of National Assembly of Cameroon Cavaye Djibril.Jia, the chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top advisory body, is on a three-day official visit to the central African nation. This is the first visit to the African continent by a senior Chinese leader this year.Jia said that exchange and cooperation between the CPPCC and National Assembly of Cameroon would help boost people-to-people relationship and state-to-state relationship."The CPPCC would like to increase personnel exchanges with the National Assembly of Cameroon and discuss how to run the state and promote livelihood," Jia said.Djibril said the National Assembly of Cameroon stands ready to work more closely with the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, and the CPPCC.On the broader China-Cameroon relationship, Jia said the two countries have withstood the test of time and vicissitudes in the international arena since they established the diplomatic ties in 1971."The two countries have reaped new harvests in recent years," Jia said, referring to bilateral cooperation in trade and economy, science and technology, education, among others.China appreciated Cameroon's adherence to the one-China policy and support to the most populous country on issues concerning China's core interests, Jia said.Jia reaffirmed that China would work with Cameroon and other African countries to implement eight new measures announced last year by Premier Wen Jiabao, including debt cancellation, agriculture production, infrastructure, education. As China and Cameroon will mark the 40th anniversary of the diplomatic ties, Jia called on the both sides to take the opportunity to boost exchanges at all levels and hold celebrations to uplift the relationship.Echoing Jia's proposal, Djibril said his country would like to cooperate with China to advance relationship and generate benefit for their peoples.Following the talks, Jia also delivered a key-note speech on China-African relationship.Jia will meet with President of Cameroon Paul Biya on Wednesday.Cameroon is the first leg of Jia's ten-day African tour which will also take him to Namibia and South Africa.
