SAN DIEGO, California — The Christ United Methodist Church's Safe Harbors Network needs help to prepare for the next wave of migrants approaching the US-Mexico border.The network, started in 2016, provides basic necessities for refugees, such as a bed, shower, food, clothes, medical care and legal aid, until their court date."They don't have anything, they have the clothes they're wearing, they don't have phones, they don't have money, they would be homeless, so we take them in," Volunteer Kathryn LaPointe said.In 2016 the majority of their refugees were Haitian, over the past several months they're mostly women and children from Central America."We're taking in between 20 and 30 a night the past few days, most of them were able to send to their families, but I would like to help more people," LaPointe said.Sunday, LaPointe said they're at capacity and need all the help they can get. "Every person that walks in front of me, I ask for a building," she said laughing, "can you please get me a building."The network is comprised of individuals, congregations and organizations who care for refugees. "[Provide] basic human kindness, and," LaPointe said as she sighed heavily, "I am so grateful to be able to do that to extend that kindness and I would like to extend that kindness to more people." 1351

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Drugs and graffiti were just some of the problems filling parks around San Diego, with most of the activity happening during the night hours. A curfew has now been put in place for several parks.Community members and city leaders threw a party Friday morning to celebrate the change. Residents have been rallying for a curfew at City Heights Square Mini Park, which sits in the middle of an assisted living facility for seniors. Neighbors say before the curfew, they observed everything from gangs and drugs at the park. “We are this beautiful community,” says Delia Contreras. “We have kids, we have a lot of good things, but the drugs are no good.”Since the beginning of the year, 217 crimes have been reported within a 1,500 feet radius of the park. The crimes include assault, theft, and vandalism. “To me, San Diego is a paradise, and we need to clean up the whole town,” says Ronald Tieken. City Heights Square Mini Park will now have a nightly curfew from 9 pm to 5 am. There were other parks around the city with the same problems. Cedar Ridge Mini Park, Montclair Neighborhood Park, North Park Community Park and North Park Mini Park. These parks will now have a curfew of midnight to 6 a.m. “It took a lot of time because we didn’t want to take just one site, so we opened it up for other sites to bring their concerns in, and five parks were identified to go forward with it,” says Raul Contreras, with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --The FDA has placed new restrictions on a controversial birth control device called Essure.The maker of the implant, Bayer, will only be allowed to sell to providers who agree to fully inform women about the risks and side effects.A San Diego woman who had the Essure implant is now suing the physician who performed the procedure.She says she wasn't given enough information and wants to warn others about her experience.Three months after Essure was implanted she began experiencing severe pain. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A large San Diego Church is continuing to hold in person, indoor services despite orders from San Diego County to hold services in outdoor settings only. Awaken Church has gotten three cease and desist orders at different locations and also had an outbreak at one of those locations, according to San Diego County.County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said the church is not cooperating with the county in regards to the outbreak at their Balboa location, so the county had to publicly announce the community outbreak and ask anyone impacted to quarantine. Typically, the specifics of community outbreaks would not be publicized, but he said the lack of cooperation from the church led to the public notice.“The Awaken Church in general has continued to be very defiant and continue to put the members of their church at a great risk and continue to not cooperate as we seek to investigate positive cases, which led us to the unique situation of publicly reporting that they did have a public outbreak at the Awaken Church,” said Supervisor Fletcher.Anyone who went to the location at 7620 Balboa Ave. between Nov. 15 and Nov. 22 is asked to quarantine for two weeks.Related: County asks Kearny Mesa church attendees to quarantine after COVID-19 outbreakSupervisor Fletcher said the county is trying to find a balance between respecting freedom of religion and also keeping the community safe.“We do recognize the first amendment role and I recognize the important role faith plays in our lives and in our community, particularly in a time of difficulty, which is why we work so hard to try and make sure that it is available, it just has to be available in a safe way,” he said.Glenn Smith is a Professor of Constitutional Law at California Western School of Law and also teaches at UC San Diego, and said there’s a chance churches could fight restrictions in court, but it depends on the circumstances. He said if a church is impacted by blanket rules for an area, they would likely not win in court. A church would have to prove that they were treated differently.“If religions are being treated in a nondiscriminatory fashion, in other words if there’s a general law that establishes how many people can be in a room or what are the conditions, and it happens to have an incidentally impact on religion, that’s not a special problem as long as government has a rational reason for doing that, that’s alright. It’s only when government discriminates against religion that a special level of review called strict scrutiny is required and government has to have a really really good reason for discrimination,” said Smith.He added that the makeup of a court will also impact any future decisions on religious freedom, saying when Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was alive, cases regarding religious freedom during the pandemic were found to not be discriminatory, however with the newly appointed Justice Barrett, it’s more likely the Supreme Court would rule in favor of a church. 3009

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The high temperatures, dry brush, and low humidity are leading to elevated fire danger in San Diego County this week.Cal Fire San Diego is asking everyone to be prepared for the possibility of a wildfire igniting.“We depend on the public to be careful; we depend on the public to be prepared at a moment’s notice to evacuate,” said Cal Fire Captain, Isaac Sanchez.“The fact that the winds aren’t there, it does not help us sleep at night; we’re still very dry.
