WASHINGTON — Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski says she's “struggling” over whether she can support President Donald Trump given his handling of the virus and race crises roiling the U.S. Murkowski said Thursday to reporters on Capitol Hill that she was “thankful” for retired Gen. James Mattis' extraordinary rebuke of Trump for politicizing the military. Mattis' comments, published Wednesday, accused Trump of dividing America, saying that Trump "does not evn pretend to try" to unite the countrty.Asked about her support of president, Murkowski replied, “I have struggled with it for a long time.” Murkowski retracted her endorsement of Trump in 2016 after the “Access Hollywood” tape revealed he had bragged about sexually assaulting women. She voted to acquit Trump of House impeachment charges earlier this year. Murkowski is among the first Republican lawmakers to formally rebuke Trump for his handling of Monday's photo op, which required hundreds of largely peaceful protesters to be removed from a park near the White House so Trump could walk to a nearby church, which had been burned during a weekend riot. 1137

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has told a U.S. House committee that the coronavirus outbreak in the U.S. is going to get worse.CDC Director Robert Redfield reports that U.S. virus deaths are now up to 31 and confirmed cases are over 1,000.Fauci told the House Oversight and Reform Committee in Washington on Wednesday that "I can say we will see more cases and things will get worse than they are right now."He says how much worse it gets depends on two things: the ability of U.S. authorities to curtail the influx of travelers who may be bringing the disease into the country and the ability of states and communities to contain local outbreaks in this country.Asked if the worst is yet to come, Fauci said: "Yes, it is."U.S. lawmakers and health officials have set up containment zones and quarantine areas and sought to limit contact with those who might be infected.Governors and other leaders are scrambling to slow the spread of the virus, banning large gatherings, enforcing quarantines and calling National Guard troops in to help.U.S. health officials are now telling doctors and nurses that surgical masks are OK to wear when treating patients who may be sick from the new coronavirus — a decision made in reaction to shortages of more protective respirator masks. The CDC decision was prompted by reports of dwindling supplies of respirators.Meanwhile, across the world, more than 121,000 cases have been confirmed, with over 4,300 deaths. A majority were reported in mainland China, where the virus was first detected. Wednesday, Belgium's health ministry has announced the country's first three deaths related to the virus: a 90-year-old woman and two men aged 73 and 86. Albania and Bulgaria also each had their first deaths.Italy has become one of the hardest hit countries in the outbreak. Italian authorities say the number of coronavirus infections has topped the 10,000 mark and deaths rose to 631 on Tuesday. A sweeping lockdown has been put in place in the country to try to prevent it from becoming the next epicenter of the epidemic. The lockdown comes as China edged back to normal, with the diminishing threat prompting its president to visit the outbreak's epicenter. But in growing swaths of the globe outside China, virus-related closures and other disruptions are increasingly the new normal. 2412

We were just involved in a fatal accident with a driver going the wrong way on Veteran’s Highway as we were leaving Myrtle Beach. Thank God we are all okay. I feel so bad for those who died needlessly tonight. I’m really shaken up by what I witnessed. God bless those who died. pic.twitter.com/zcfRK7XxFc— Travis Tritt (@Travistritt) May 18, 2019 358

Two top Illinois GOP officials are condemning a meme recently posted to the Facebook page of the Illinois Republican County Chairmen's Association that depicted four minority congresswomen as being "THE JIHAD SQUAD."The image, which has since been taken down from the group's page, is modeled after an action movie poster and edited to include the four lawmakers' faces on the bodies of various characters. The women in the photo are Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan. The image includes the words "THE JIHAD SQUAD" below the names along with the words "POLITICAL JIHAD IS THEIR GAME" and "IF YOU DON'T AGREE WITH THEIR SOCIALIST IDEOLOGY, YOU'RE RACIST."The meme also includes the association's logo. It's unclear who in the party posted the image, or if those responsible have been admonished.President Donald Trump has recently criticized the four women, known as "the Squad," in racist terms as part of an effort to define the Democratic Party as far-left. Omar and Tlaib are the first two Muslim women in Congress, and Ocasio-Cortez identifies as a Democratic socialist.CNN has reached out to the offices of the four lawmakers for comment.A 1267
