In a few weeks, thousands of college students will begin their yearly right of fall by returning to the campus of Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, but a return to campus life this year will mean testing and quarantining for those students who chose to come back.Like colleges and universities across the country, Tufts is experimenting with a new plan that will allow more than 5,000 students to come back to campus while at the same time, instituting rigorous new guidelines in an effort to keep COVID-19 from spreading.The key to success, testing.“We wanted to test for COVID at a frequency that would catch people when they’re asymptomatic before they have a chance to spread,” explained Tuft’s President Anthony Monaco.Tufts plan for the fall is as complex as the virus itself. Students from outside the Northeast will be brought back to campus first, where they will be forced to quarantine for 14 days. Health officials expect at least a small portion of those students to test positive for COVID-19 the moment they step back on campus. Because of that, the university has constructed an extra 200 modular units of dorm space. The idea of the modular facilities is to give campus health officials a contained area to monitor students who test positive for the virus, while at the same time, keeping them out of the general population.After students from outside the Northeast are brought back to campus, students from the general area around New England will return.Every single student will be tested twice a week for COVID-19, something experts say will be a key component to safely reopening college campuses this fall. Regardless, school officials expect students to test positive for the virus throughout the fall.Researchers at Yale’s School of Public Health have been advising Tufts and hundreds of other colleges who are planning to resume some form of in-person learning this fall.“If we don’t test frequently, we give silent spreaders an opportunity to grab hold and this virus is hard to play catch-up with,” explained Professor A. David Paltiel, who recently published a study on how quickly the virus can spread through colleges if left unchecked.To study the virus, Paltiel and his colleagues used epidemic modeling to assemble hypothetical situations resembling a college campus. The study found that if you take 5,000 healthy students and add in only 10 students who have COVID-19, hundreds, if not thousands, of kids will be sick by Thanksgiving.“At that point, the only thing that keeps the virus from getting out of control is Thanksgiving break,” he said.That is why testing is key, the study found. When Paltiel took those same 5,000 kids and added in 10 students who have COVID-10, but tested every student twice a week, the study found that only about 100 students ended up catching COVID.“Many universities are planning to only test students who have symptoms, in our view that is a recipe for disaster,” he said.Only adding to the uncertainty of the situation, about 40 percent of college students said they would return to live near campus even if classes were held virtually. Paltiel and other health officials say because of that, it’s more beneficial to have students on-campus where they can be monitored and tested frequently.“It’s hard and it could be a nightmare, people who say we shouldn’t open campuses should remember the nightmare doesn’t go away,” he said. 3420

(KGTV) - An altercation over a mask turned ugly at an Imperial Beach taco shop on Thursday night.Just before 10 p.m. at Don Pancho's Taco Shop, surveillance video shows a customer at the walk-up order window. He's using his shirt and sleeve to cover his face."Our cashier says he has to wear a proper face mask. The customer gets upset. The cashier offers a face mask that we have on hand for those who don't have masks. He thinks about it and gets upset," said manager Myra Espinoza.In the video, the man waves his hand, apparently waving off the mask offer, before he begins walking away. Moments later, there is a loud sound."He heard something hit the window, and the window falling and shattering down," said Espinoza.The video revealed the cause: the man took his skateboard and thrust into one of the restaurant's windows."It hurts. That's like my house. It's so disrespectful. I wouldn't go to his house and break his window," said Espinoza.Espinoza says it's not the first time someone has gotten upset over the mask policy."We have sliding windows. One gentleman grabbed the sliding windows so hard, it bounced back," said Espinoza.Still, those types of incidents are rare. Thursday's vandalism is the first time things have turned destructive."It's uncalled for and unnecessary. We're all trying to what's best and keep people safe," said Espinoza.The vandalism totaled about 0 dollars in damage. In a heartbreaking Facebook post, a Maryland animal shelter announced they found a puppy with its ears cut off tied to a tree in Baltimore. BARCS say they got a call saying someone had found two dogs tied to a tree and several other puppies in an empty lot. When the officer arrived, they found one of the puppies was bleeding from the head and the other puppies were for sale. The puppies were immediately taken to BARCS where they were seen by a vet. They named the injured dog Claude and determined that his ears were removed using poor instruments, like household objects, leaving him with tissue damage, pain, and infection. Claude is only 10 weeks old and BARCS says he is trying to do normal puppy things, but cannot because of the pain. He received emergency surgery but the veterinarians had to remove untreated infected tissue, so he lost even more of his ear structure. BARCS is now asking for money so they can continue to help Claude so he can find a loving home and recover. He needs more space in his refrigerator."This is one we've had since we built the house 17 years ago," he said.Like many families during this pandemic, he wants to stock up on frozen beef and chicken."We thought we would just invest in a freezer we would put in the garage, so we started to look."But finding a freezer was tougher than finding Nemo."We have been searching all summer long, nine months, for a freezer," Conougher told us in a Zoom interview from his kitchen."And even when the big box stores have their specials, they don't have them in stock."Many brands, price ranges affectedIt doesn't matter if you are looking for a freezer, refrigerator, range, oven, or washing machine.It also doesn't matter if your budget is 0 or ,000, or what brand you want (though American brands like Whirlpool and Maytag appear to be in better shape than European or Korean brands).You are going to find spot shortages just about everywhere, according to Ken Reiman, co-owner of an appliance distributor.He supplies builders and remodelers, who he says now have to delay finishing some projects due to ongoing shortages."When I check our vendor websites," he said, "they are just not available."He says the shortages that started when factories shut down for two months early in 2020 have not let up."For instance," Reiman explained, "they will give an estimated time of December 5, and December 6 comes around and they have moved to January."Why the shortage hasn't endedReiman says there are 3 reasons for the current shortages.Originally, it was factory shutdowns in March, April and May, along with delays getting appliances shipped from China during that time.The second reason is shortages of foreign-made parts, such as wiring harnesses and compressors, which forces U.S. factories to shut down their assembly lines until product arrives.The third reason is high demand, as people spend their vacation dollars this year on their kitchens instead, Reiman said.His suggestion: Be flexible on brand and model."We have products coming in," he said. "Our warehouses are more stuffed now than ever.
