SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A controversial Target store opened its doors Tuesday night in North Park, on University Avenue at the corner of Ray Street. Not everyone was on board when plans for the two-story Target were announced. North Park residents worried about the impact the retailer would have on local businesses and on parking in an already crowded neighborhood. There was also frustration when Target painted over a popular mural that had been on the side of the building for years. San Diego State University professor Dana Kuhn said economically, Target could have a positive impact on the community by creating jobs and boosting businesses nearby. Kuhn said people spending money at Target would inevitably mean they spend money in surrounding businesses. Kuhn also explained that Target will provided goods and services the community needs and that the money spent will stay in North Park. Target says the new store created 60 jobs and many of the employees do live nearby. Target is officially open as of Tuesday night but a grand opening for the community is scheduled for Sunday, March 17. 1106

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A dog named Roadrunner was spotted on camera escaping a coyote in an incident that’s happening more than ever before, according to the Helen Woodward Animal Center. The shelter’s veterinarians got a call from neighbors in Vista last month. One of the residents saw a small dog repeatedly on the run from coyotes in the Creekside and Brengle Terrace areas. Neighbors kept in touch through NextDoor as many of them tried to lure the dog to safety. Babs Fry, whose nonprofit “A Way Home For Animals” helps rescue pets, was able to save Roadrunner. She brought the dog to the Helen Woodward Animal Center for a free checkup. “We were concerned that Roadrunner may have been bitten and would require Rabies shots and months of downtime, but he was one of the lucky ones who managed to escape without incident,” said Animal Health Supervisor Madison Hughes. Roadrunner was treated for malnourishment, and skin and flea issues, shelter officials said. Fry took him home for a full recovery and will start interviewing potential adopters next week. Roadrunner’s story is increasingly common, according to Helen Woodward Animal Center officials. The shelter has received more reports of coyote attacks and the deaths of pets than ever before. The increase in coyote encounters may be due to last year’s fires, seasonal drought, heat, and recent housing development, shelter officials said. The Helen Woodward Animal Center has tips to protect your pets from coyotes:Don’t keep pet food or water outside, especially at nightSupervise your pets while outdoors, especially smaller dogsPick up fallen fruit from trees in your yard.Keep your cat indoors, especially between dusk and dawnThoroughly clean your grill and if possible store it in a garageNever leave dogs tied up outsideDo keep your dog on a leash on walks and hikes in order to keep them in close proximityBring a whistle or bear spray along on hikes and walksSix-foot tall fences are most effective in keeping coyotes out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A bluff that overlooks Beacon’s Beach in Encinitas is on the brink of collapsing, which could mean changes for the walking trail that leads visitors down to the beach. The City of Encinitas says the bluff is at risk. There is a low-lying failure and the bluff could fall, taking the walking trail with it.“We’ve been told by our experts that there is a chance that the slide could happen at any time,”says Brenda Wisneski, Developmental Services Director for the City of Encinitas. Visitors at Beacon’s Beach say they feel the walking trail makes the beach different from others. “It’s one of my favorite beaches in all of San Diego. A part of that is because of the access, this trail is highly unique and it's not stairs,” says Mark Tayer. The city has a proposal to add a staircase south of the entry to the trail.“That is the most safe, the most secure. It requires a minimal amount of stability at the base of it,” says Wisneski.Wisneski says the city also has plans to move the parking lot back from the failure area. This could mean fewer parking spaces for visitors. The city hopes to begin construction in the fall of 2019. The proposal will go to the planning commission next. The trail will stay there until it poses a safety issue to visitors. On Wednesday, the City of Encinitas will have an open house where members of the community can voice their concerns. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 4-acre brush fire in Chula Vista highlighted a firefighting technique that's relatively rare throughout the state: nighttime aerial water drops.Once considered too dangerous to attempt, a handful of agencies in California now have the helicopters and equipment needed to handle night operations, including the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.San Diego Fire has been doing water drops using military-grade night vision goggles since 2005, said pilot Chris Hartnell. The agency expanded its night helicopter coverage countywide in late 2014.Only two helicopters in San Diego County have the capability to do night drops. Both were in use Wednesday when flames broke out near a riverbed just before 11 p.m. in the 2500 block of Faivre Street, near Hollister Street.CAL Fire does not currently operate firefighting helicopters at night anywhere in the state, although the agency has plans to purchase 12 new helicopters with that capability, said CAL Fire San Diego spokesman Thomas Shoots. The agency just received its first Firehawk helicopter this year and plans to put it into service in about a month, Shoots said. Two more helicopters should arrive before the end of the year, and the agency plans to acquire all 12 by 2021. 1256
