DENVER, Colo. – Workers use a lot of masks at Comfort Dental in downtown Denver.“We order about 12 boxes a month and each box has 50 masks in it,” said Dr. Jashon Hughes. Now, Hughes and his staff are experiencing a major shortage with this much needed medical supply, saying this deficit is linked to increased concerns over the novel coronavirus.Following news of the coronavirus spreading, Hughes started seeing companies putting a limit on how many masks he can order.“Usually I can order as many boxes as I wanted,” he said while looking at an online order form. “It says, ‘due to the coronavirus outbreak we are experiencing higher than normal demand globally for infection control products such as masks, goggles and face shields.’” Now, other medical experts are speaking out on this shortage. “I can understand why folks want to wear masks,” said Sheryl Zajdowicz, Ph.D. “However, it’s really a bit of a panic move.”Zajdowicz is a biology professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver and says most times wearing a mask won’t keep people protected.“You may not have any benefit whatsoever,” she said. “Because you may be wearing it long term, getting it saturated and that could possibly make you more susceptible to contracted other things.” The U.S. Surgeon General recently urged the public to stop buying masks and leave them for health workers, tweeting “they are not effective in preventing general public from catching coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can’t get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and our communities at risk!”Zajdowicz has also noticed some people trying to make a profit and cash in on this concern with the coronavirus with hand sanitizers selling for several times more than its normal cost.“It seems a bit extreme and just appalling to see that cost,” she said. “ for a typical bottle (for an right-ounce bottle of hand sanitizer).”Zajdowicz says the best defense against the coronavirus is a good ol’ fashioned handwashing – scrubbing your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, which is about the time it takes you to sing “Happy Birthday” twice.Back at the dentist's office, Hughes says the super high demand for masks is creating all kinds of challenges.“Coronavirus isn’t the only thing hoping to protect from,” he said. “We’ve got the flu, colds, stuff like that.”He added if the concerns continue to grow and supplies continue to shrink, they may have to take drastic measures to stay safe“Long term if this thing blows up then, yeah, you could see offices not opening here and there if it did spread and get worse,” he said. 2625
China's National Health Commission says the number of cases of a new respiratory virus has risen to 830 with 25 deaths. The update Friday morning also confirmed the first death outside the central province of Hubei. The health commission in Hebei, a northern province bordering Beijing, said an 80-year-old man died after showing symptoms upon his return from a two-month stay in Wuhan to see relatives. Wuhan is the capital of Hubei and has been the epicenter of the outbreak of the coronavirus first detected last month. 534
DENVER, Colorado — The body of the 7-year-old boy found dead inside a Denver storage shed last month was encased in concrete, two law enforcement sources have confirmed to KMGH television station. The state of Caden McWilliams’ body when it was found was first reported by The Denver Post and confirmed by KMGH via law enforcement sources from different agencies who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing. The coroner’s office has not formally identified the boy as McWilliams, but law enforcement authorities did so last week when they announced the arrest of his mother, 43-year-old Elisha Pankey, in the case.Pankey was charged Monday morning with child abuse resulting in death and abuse of a corpse in the case. She turned herself in to police last Wednesday. The boy’s body was discovered in a storage unit in the 5000 block of E. Evans Avenue in Denver on Dec. 23, but court documents and police have said the boy could have died as early as last May. Police and Denver Public Schools have indicated the boy missed the last week of school in May.The boy’s body was discovered inside the storage unit after Aurora police asked Denver police to help in a missing persons case involving McWilliams on Dec. 23. Aurora officers had arrested Pankey a day earlier on suspicion of drug possession charges.Pankey’s husband, Leland Pankey, was in court last week on charges that he strangled his wife in 2017. Leland Pankey was arrested on Dec. 21 – about a year after that original incident allegedly occurred. 1557
Dr. Deborah Birx, a member of the White House's task force leading the effort to fight the spread of COVID-19, said on Tuesday that anyone who has recently been in New York City should self-quarantine for 14 days. New York City has become the epicenter of coronavirus cases in the United States in recent days. Mayor Bill DeBlasio said that 131 have died in New York City from the coronavirus, warning that many more fatalities are to come. Birx said she has particular concern for those living in and coming from the New York City metro area."To everyone who has left New York over the last few days, because of the rate of the number of cases, you may have been exposed before you left New York and I, like governor DeSantis has put out today, everybody who was in New York should be self-quarantining for the next 14 days an make sure the virus does not spread to others," Birx said. Dr. Anthony Fauci, also a member of the White House's coronavirus task force, echoed Birx's comments. "It's a very serious situation," Fauci said. "They've suffered terribly through no fault of their own. But what we're seeing now is that understandably, people want to get out of New York. They're going to Florida. They're going to Long Island. They're going to different places. "The idea, if you look at the statistics, it's disturbing. About one per thousand of these individuals are infected. That's about eight to ten times more than in other areas, which means when they go to another place, for their own safety, they've got to be careful and monitor themselves. If they get sick, bring it to the attention of a physician, get tested. Also, the idea about self-isolating for two weeks will be very important because we don't want that to be another seeding point to the rest of the country, wherever they go."Earlier on Tuesday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that the state is expecting a sudden surge in the need of respirators. He said that he expects to receive 400 respirators from FEMA, but said that the state is in need of 30,000 units. "FEMA says 'we are sending 400 ventilators.' Really? What am I going to do with 400 ventilators when I need 30,000?" Cuomo said. "You pick the 26,000 people who are gonna die because you sent 400 ventilators!"In New York City, the coronavirus is affecting a large number of people, including more than 200 members of NYPD. Also, a 36-year-old school principal died from coronavirus-related symptoms on Monday. 2463
