SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Drone video of a Pacific Beach man's search and rescue of his blind pet chameleon plays out like the perfect Hollywood action sequence.Vince Kay Vera says his pet chameleon, "Pete," is temporarily blind due to an infection. "He doesn't normally act like this. He's usually hunting, and hiding, and cruising, but right now he's just roaming aimlessly because he can't see," Vera says.RELATED: Blind San Diego puppy, guide sibling capture hearts around the globeBut that temporary struggle didn't stop the sly Pete from escaping his outdoor enclosure and ending up on the roof of Vera's Pacific Beach condo."So that's all he wants to do all day long, just go straight up," Vera laughed.When Vera noticed Pete was gone, he grabbed his drone and checked the few places he thought Pete could go.RELATED: Coronado gym creates 'March Madness' acts of kindness challenge"I thought it was gonna be hard to find him, but he was just blind wandering around up there you know," Vera said.Video shows Pete perched on the roof, in all his bright neon green splendor. Since there was no roof access, Vera enacted a daring rescue using his drone and some rope. Video shows the rope dangling over Pete, before the chameleon latches on a becomes the Tom Cruise of chameleons.Vera was able to hoist Pete off the roof and safely lower his pet to the ground.Vera's excitement was also caught on video: "Greatest day of my life!" 1434
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- High surf is creating dangerous conditions for swimmers hitting the beach throughout San Diego County. A High Surf Advisory is in effect San Diego coastal cities from Monday morning at 8 A.M. until Tuesday night at 10 P.M.Just before 10 A.M. Monday, SDFD Lifeguards shut down the Ocean Beach Pier.They are also cautioning any swimmers and surfers who are not advanced to stay out of the water until the advisory expires.Many advanced surfers tell 10News they have been looking forward to this day for a long time. Those who hit the water Monday took advantage of the seven to 11 foot waves along the coast, saying it’s not just the swell and the direction but the time between the waves and the decreased winds that make for great surf conditions. "The quality and the length its just a great day a great day for everybody,” one surfer tells 10 News.One group of surfers found out first-hand how dangerous these conditions are. They were taking a boat to surf off of Point Loma when the waves flipped in Monday afternoon. The surfers escaped without injury, but the boat had to be towed back to shore. 1130

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Even though many local businesses have struggled amid the pandemic and San Diego County saw an unprecedented spike in unemployment in the second quarter, there has not been a significant jump in the number of empty retail storefronts -- at least not yet.The vacancy rate in San Diego County ticked up slightly to 5.6 percent in the second quarter, according to an analysis by commercial real estate firm CBRE.Vacancies tend to be a lagging indicator. Large national chains like 24 Hour Fitness and Pier 1 Imports have announced closures in recent weeks, but the businesses are still occupying their commercial spaces. 24 Hour Fitness is closing four clubs in San Diego County. Pier 1 Imports is closing all 11 of its local stores; four of those locations have already closed.While vacancies take time, the pandemic has slowed the region’s commercial real estate market in other ways, said CBRE Associate Field Research Director Michael Combs.New leasing activity in the retail sector dropped to nearly a 10-year low in the second quarter, down nearly 50 percent from the first three months of 2020.“There just haven't been a lot of new deals as tenants especially in retail are waiting to see how this situation plays out,” he said.The slowdown in new leasing activity may be a sign that companies are holding off on plans to expand operations, since new leases with larger footprints are typically signed far in advance. 1448
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Following a heated battle over new regulations for short-term vacation rentals Wednesday, the San Diego City Council approved new regulations in a 6-2 vote.The new rules will go into effect July 2019.The rules, which were based on a plan by Mayor Kevin Faulconer, adopt the city’s first license-based system to manage the rentals, charge cost-recoverable fees to administer licenses and enforce code violations, establish a “Good Neighbor” policy to preserve neighborhood quality of life, hire additional staff to respond to complaints about nuisance properties, and implement a per-night fee that would generate funding for affordable housing projects.RELATED: San Diego City Council approves new rules on short-term rentalsAlthough the plan initially called for homeowners to be allowed two licenses for a primary and secondary home, the council later amended the provision before the plan passed its first vote in July.Faulconer’s proposal was changed to allow a host to be issued a license for a primary residence and a dwelling on the same land as the primary residence.Faulconer also had a provision in his plan allowing no limitations on the number of licenses available to hosts within Mission Beach when it was introduced in June. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of Clairemont neighbors attended a public hearing Wednesday to learn why their neighborhood was picked for a new homeless housing project.A developer wants to convert former office space on 5858 Mt. Alifan Drive into roughly 50 apartments for the homeless. The location is near the Vons shopping plaza.“It’s just not acceptable. I’m not against homeless shelters by any means but this is not the proper location,” said Mark Bromley. He believes the site is too close to homes and schools.San Diego City Councilman Chris Cate said the developer has not yet applied for a permit to start the project. Cate told 10News he can’t give his opinion on the project in case the issue goes before the Council.Organizers shut down the planned open house after more than 200 people attended due to possible fire code violations given the size of the crowd.Another informational meeting is tentatively scheduled for next Tuesday at a larger location. 973
