CHENGDU, Nov. 12 (Xinhua)-- The reconstruction of the Erwang Temple, which was damaged in the Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008, is expected to finish on Nov. 18 in southwest China's Sichuan Province, according to local heritage protection authorities on Friday.Sitting in the Yulei Mountains in Dujiangyan City, Erwang Temple was built over 2,000 years ago to commemorate Li Bing and his son, the two engineers who built the Dujiangyan irrigation system, which was listed as a World Heritage site in 2000.The temple will soon be partially open for visitors and the final touches are being added to the water supply, drainage system and lavatories in these areas, said Fan Tuoyu, deputy chief of the Dujiangyan Cultural Relics Administration.The entire temple will be opened after the Chinese Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 3, 2011, said Fan.The reconstruction project kicked off in June, 2008 with an investment of 126 million yuan (19 million U.S. dollars) from the central budget.The temple was seriously damaged in the Wenchuan earthquake with almost all the ancient buildings having collapsed.
BEIJING, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- During the 11th Five-Year Plan period (2006-2010), China spent 3.26 trillion yuan on social security, an annual increase of 17.6 percent, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) told Xinhua Friday.Wang Jun, vice minister of the MOF, said in the 2006-2010 period, the social security expenditure from the central government stood at 1.4 trillion yuan (210.19 billion U.S. dollars), which was 2.1 times the expenditure in the previous five years.As the improvement of civil welfare is a crucial component of the harmonious society China is pursuing, financial authorities at all levels should continue to raise investments in social security when making the 2011 fiscal budget and plans for the 12th Five-Year Plan starting from 2011, Wang said.
BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- With a series of measures being adopted to curb price spikes, the Chinese government is confident of keeping prices at a reasonable level, Premier Wen Jiabao said Sunday morning."Inflation expectations are more dire than inflation itself," Wen said, urging people to remain confident and government agencies to act to stabilize prices.The premier made the remarks while answering a listener's question during a radio broadcast by China National Radio.The consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, rose to a 28-month high of 5.1 percent year on year in November, according to government statistics.Food price rises contributed to 74 percent of the CPI growth for the month.Wen said the country had a good agricultural supply base which gave the government confidence that it could stabilize prices.In a bid to control inflation, the government has also increased the bank reserve requirement ratio six times and lifted interest rates twice this year, he added.Further, authorities have introduced a package of measures including cutting fees for transportation of agriculture products and intensifying the crackdown on food price speculation.The overall price level, especially of major consumer goods, has now begun to drop, Wen said.
