Steven Bochco, a producer whose boundary-pushing series like "Hill Street Blues" and "NYPD Blue" helped define the modern TV drama, died Sunday after a battle with leukemia. He was 74.Bochco died Sunday morning at home, surrounded by family, according to Phillip Arnold, Bochco's personal assistant.Bochco co-created several of TV's most popular programs, while his large ensemble casts and ambitious storytelling set a benchmark beginning in the early 1980s that he refined and built upon for more than 30 years. TAMPA, Fla. — Air conditioning units may be contributing to the spread of COVID-19, especially in the southern part of the United States, according to a Harvard epidemiologist.Dr. Edward Nardell is a professor in the Departments of Environmental Health and Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He's done in-depth research on how air conditioning units contribute to the spread of airborne infections.Nardell said air conditioning can help airborne viruses spread in three ways.First, people go inside to cool down, when you are much safer outdoors, Nardell said. Now, we're seeing more people indoors because of the high heat and humidity, specifically in the southern states like Florida.The second problem is that air conditioning brings in very little outside air, according to Nardell. While this isn't a major problem inside your own home, it can be especially problematic in corporate settings."It just isn't economically possible to bring in outside air, recirculate it and dehumidify it," he said.Lastly, he said when people are indoors, you're often not spaced out safely as you would be outdoors."You are not socially distanced as much, but you're re-breathing the same air that someone else just exhaled," Nardell said. "We call it rebreathed air fraction, and if someone is infectious, often asymptomatic, you're going to be rebreathing their small particles."Nardell also said air conditioning units can generate air currents that can carry large particles even further, similar to what researchers found contributed to the spread of the novel coronavirus disease in an air-conditioned restaurant in Guangzhou, China, involving three family clusters.On the Department of Homeland Security's website, this tool can be used to estimate how long the virus would be expected to remain stable while airborne.Now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending restaurants increasing the distance between tables and improving ventilation.The use of germicidal lamps, a technology that Nardell said is almost 100 years old, has been proven effective in protecting against tuberculosis infection and is already in use in some settings to fight COVID-19.The lamps are set up to shine horizontally, high in the room where sterilization is needed. Students in at the Arizona College Prepatory Academy will walk out of class Wednesday to show their support for the Second Amendment.The event is called Stand for the Second and is happening in at least 39 other states across the U.S.The walkout comes after students around the country staged a walkout aimed at stopping gun violence and honoring the students killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. In February, protesters nationwide left their classrooms and remained outside for 17 minutes to honor the 17 people gunned down.Will Riley, an 18 year old from New Mexico, started this event to support the lives saved by firearms.“Every year an estimated 1.5 million Americans use a firearm to defend themselves,” Riley said. “During a 16-minute walkout, that breaks down to 91 American lives saved during the walkout. We want Americans to know that firearms are overwhelmingly used for good in our country.”The participating students here in Tucson plan to walk out at 10 a.m. 1044

The Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) has confirmed that a soldier who was wanted in connection with the disappearance with Pfc. Vanessa Guillen shot and killed himself during an interaction with police Wednesday morning.In their statement, CID also confirmed that a civilian suspect had been taken into custody by the Texas Rangers in connection with Guillen's disappearance. The civilian, an estranged wife of a former Fort Hood soldier, is currently being held in the Bell County jail.The Army did not identify either suspect in their statement.The announcement came as Guillen's family delivered a powerful press conference in Washington, calling on Congress to investigate her disappearance and sexual harassment in the military.During that press conference, the family said they believe that remains that were found in Texas on Tuesday were Guillen's.Family members also said her superior officers sexually harassed Guillen before her disappearance. They said that before her disappearance, Guillen told family members and other soldiers that she was being harassed by her superiors. However, she did not report the abuse to her superior officers because she feared retribution.Guillen's sister gave an impassioned speech in which she accused Army officials of "lying to her face" throughout the investigation into Guillen's disappearance.Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, appeared at the press conference along with the family and echoed calls for a Congressional investigation."We need to know why she did not get the help when she needed it," Gabbard said.Guillen, 20, was last seen around 11:30 am in the Regimental Engineer Squadron Headquarters' parking lot at Fort Hood on April 22.It wasn't until late June that the Army said it suspected foul play in connection with Guillen's death. CID now says it is investigating claims that Guillen was sexually harassed prior to her disappearance.According to a statement from the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID), partial human remains were found during a search of an area of interest close to the Leon River in Bell County on Tuesday.
