SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Friday, a San Diego woman recounted how she was sexually abused by her priest at St. Jude when she was young, hoping it would encourage others to come forward.Walking up to the church to speak she said she felt a wave of emotions, "My chest was heavy, my stomach was sick. I was catching my breath." She told 10News her name is Cynthia Ann Doe, keeping her last name private, wearing a scarf over her head and dark sunglasses, concealing part of her identity for fear of retaliation. She said she could still see the rectory, where Monsignor Gregory Sheridan lived, next to the church. In it's place is a parking lot.She depicted what her life was like when she was just five-years-old, "I had no one to protect me, my mother and my father divorced when I was four, my brother died months before that." She said they lived inside a brightly painted yellow apartment building, sitting just across the street. Ann Doe said she clung to her faith and her family was honored when Monsignor Sheridan took favor in their company. Alone in his bedroom, her lawyer said he violated her with his fingers. She said at that age she couldn't process what happened, "that you are worthless dirty, a bad person, so bad that even God must not love you, because your priest hurt you and made you feel nasty.""I'm asking anyone male or female who may be struggling with what happened to them by Father Sheridan to come forward and be heard," she said. That call growing louder as more cases arise across the country. Pope Francis issued the first law for officials worldwide Thursday, requiring them to report abuse to their superiors. The local Catholic Church also proactive, publishing a list of priests with credible allegations against them. Monsignor Sheridan listed at the bottom of page seven. The statute of limitations ran out for Cynthia decades ago, but she has one request of the Diocese, asking them to pay for her years of therapy, "I would like to be reimbursed, I can give them every bill from 1981." 2023

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dozens of people came out to see a country music concert at Moonshine Beach in Pacific Beach Thursday night. The concert was scheduled before the Borderline Bar and Grill shooting in Thousand Oaks Thursday night.  Brodie Stewart was opening for Colt Ford.Country Music Stewart told 10News ahead of the show he would hold a moment of silence for the victims of Borderline during his show. He also said proceeds from his merchandise sales would also be donated to victim’s families.“It’s hard to talk about because it’s so close for our friends and the country music community,” Stewart said. “It’s been devastating.”Becky Williams, a long-time country music fan, said it’s unfortunate that it was the second attack in a country music venue in just a little over a year.  The Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas in October 2017, was the deadliest attack by a lone gunman in America.  Despite the repeated attacks, Williams said that she didn’t think twice about attending the concert Thursday night.“Heck no, country music is my life,” Williams told 10News.Survivors from the Las Vegas shooting said the Borderline shooting reopened old wounds and churned up former emotions.“I still haven’t been able to really cope with it, and it brought that back up to the surface,” said Kyle Hurd, who survived the Las Vegas shooting.Others shared the same sentiment, saying it was the best place anyone part of the country music could be.“We love that we can get together and mourn together and we understand each other,” Kimberly Burroughs said. 1578

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For the first time, the hunting license suspected Poway Synagogue shooter John Earnest presented to buy the rifle used in the alleged attack has been made public. The dates on the license show it was invalid at the time Earnest purchased the gun from a dealer in San Diego.Earnest, 19 years old at the time of purchase, needed a valid state-issued hunting license to get around a new California law that raised the age limit to buy a firearm to 21. RELATED: Poway synagogue shooting suspect returns to court for hearingAt a preliminary hearing Thursday, prosecutors shared an image of the hunting license, showing it was valid from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- From termite infestations to leaky pipes and AC units, some students at San Diego State University say their on-campus housing complex is “abysmal” even though it costs hundreds of dollars more per month than newer apartments just steps away.Shortly after moving into Aztec Corner, sophomores Hanna Bengard and Kalie Slivkoff said they had issues with electricity, a leaky A/C unit and spiders. A few weeks ago, they found termites in a roommate’s bed. They each pay ,285 a month for a four-person apartment in the on-campus housing complex, even though there’s another complex less than 20 yards away that charges 5 a month.RELATED: Thousands of students move into campus housing ahead of Fall 2019 semesterThe students say they have no other options because a new SDSU policy requires all non-local sophomores to live in on-campus housing.“It’s really frustrating,” said Bengard.Slivkoff added, “I get their point. Better GPAs, closer to campus. I get that kind of stuff, but raising the prices by nearly half, I just don’t agree with that.”SDSU took over the complex this semester with a master lease. Last year, rents were 4, according to the Daily Aztec.RELATED: Residents against SDSU 'mega-dorm' in their community“They’re forcing people to live in these apartments and that’s given them the ability to drastically upcharge the price,” said another resident, Connor Dreher.A Change.org petition demanding refunds had more than 560 signatures as of Friday afternoon.“The rent rate is a reflection of the property manager's market rate, plus SDSU’s residential education cost, which is embedded within the rent rate,” said SDSU spokeswoman La Monica Everett-Haynes. “Prior to the master lease agreement, rent was paid in 12 monthly payments. Today, SDSU’s rent on a license agreement are on a 10 installment payment agreement to accommodate student financial aid scheduling.”Everett-Haynes said the university does not own the property or directly respond to maintenance requests, but SDSU does track the requests to ensure they’re handled promptly.RELATED: SDSU Christian sorority sisters speak out over plans to demolish their house“The offices of Housing Administration and Residential Education has been actively working with residents to ensure that issues are being properly reported so that they may be addressed,” she said in a statement. As of noon Friday, there were only two outstanding service requests in the 602-bed complex, she said.Students acknowledged most service requests are handled promptly. But they said the problems just don’t seem to stop.“We’re all just fed up,” Dreher said. 2641
