BEIJING, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- A Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader Tuesday said government and Party officials should make more effort to deal with petitions and resolve public grievances.Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks at a meeting in Beijing, where officials discussed work on petitions this year.Despite a drop in petition numbers last year, China would still face a lot public petitions this year since some people still had living difficulties while there were still too many social management problems, Zhou said.Government officials and Party cadres, particularly those at city and county levels, should meet petitioners in person and handle their appeals on a one-on-one basis, he said.Greater efforts must be paid to address unresolved petitions within a time limit, and to prevent more petitions at root by avoiding risks to stability in making policies, said Zhou, who is also the secretary of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC Central Committee.Zhou said the government must not simply reject public petitions and should instead meet people's legitimate demands in petitions.Petitioners who disrupt public order should be handled in accordance with the law, he said.

ISLAMABAD, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Acting President and Senate Chairman Farooq Hamid Naek and National Assembly Speaker Fehmida Mirza visited the newly-launched Pakistan-China Friendship Center in Islamabad on Thursday.Naek and Mirza, with the company of Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Liu Jian, visited the friendship hall, conference rooms and other facilities in the center.They also toured a photography exhibition highlighting the history of the bilateral ties and an exhibition of masterpieces of the Chinese brush painting.In a message left on a guestbook, Naek viewed the friendship center as a symbol of the close friendly brotherly ties between the two countries. CHANGSHA, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in a fireworks blast in central China' s Hunan Province rose from an earlier announced nine to 12 after DNA tests results were completed , local authorities said Sunday night.Another two people were believed to be missing, police said, adding that three of the 12 victims were still to be identified.The blast, which also injured nine others, occurred in Ningxiang County of Changsha, the provincial capital, at about 9:30 p.m. Friday when a truck loaded with fireworks fuses hit a power pole and sparks from fallen cables ignited the fuses.The blast destroyed the truck and nearby houses, shattering windows and cracking walls hundreds of meters away.Rescue work and clean-up at the site ended on Sunday, a local government spokesman said.The nine injured, who are being treated in hospital, are in stable conditions, according to the spokesman.However, the whereabouts of the truck driver remains unknown.Police continue investigating the accident.

BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- China said it will make greater efforts to start six-party emergency consultations because tensions on the Korean Peninsula have not eased."The six-party talks are a very important way to advance the denuclearization process on the Korean Peninsula and maintain peace and stability in northeast Asia. We, the concerned parties, should make full use of the talks," Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said in an interview in Beijing Friday.Launched in 2003 and stalled since the end of 2008, the six-party talks involve China, Russia, the United States, Japan, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the Republic of Korea (ROK)."While the talks have yet to be resumed, we think it is the proper time for emergency consultations between the heads of the delegations of the six parties," said the foreign minister.Tensions remain high on the Korean Peninsula after the DPRK and the ROK exchanged artillery fire on Nov. 23. China proposed emergency consultations among the chief negotiators in December.Amid the international community's repeated calls for restraint and calm, the United States held separate large-scale naval drills with the ROK and Japan in waters near the peninsula."We will continue to make patient efforts to persuade the parties to engage in consultations," Yang said.He said the tensions on the peninsular will ease "only if all the parties show their sincerity and make joint efforts.""Stability on the Korean Peninsula is good for all. Chaos there is detrimental for all," he added.During the interview, the foreign minister reiterated China's policy to be a good neighbor and partner in Asia while continuing to make contributions to the rise of the region.Yang said China suggests a new security concept that features "mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality and coordination," be fostered, adding that countries in the region should step up cooperation in anti-terrorism and non-proliferation work."China welcomes other relevant countries playing a constructive role in regional cooperation to help shape an open, inclusive, and win-win cooperative framework in the region," he added.
