DENVER — A Muslim civil rights organization is calling for an investigation after they say a Muslim-American woman was told to remove her hijab in order to enter a local arena.The Colorado chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) says Gazella Bensreiti was told by an employee at the Pepsi Center that she needed to remove her headscarf in order to be allowed into the arena.Bensreiti, a mother of three, was trying to enter the arena to watch her daughter perform the national anthem. An employee at Will Call allegedly told her "take that thing off" or not be allowed entrance, according to CAIR officials.When Bensreiti asked if she could remove her hijab in private and in front of a woman, but the employee allegedly refused. CAIR then says she was "subjected to public humiliation in front of staff, students and other parents, until her daughter became distraught, believing her mom would not be allowed in to see her perform." At a news conference scheduled for Wednesday morning, CAIR will also call on Pepsi Center officials to change their policy regarding religious attire of event attendees.Pepsi Center officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.The civil rights organization said they have reported, "an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president." 1415

Denali Brehmer began planning how to kill her "best friend" after a man she met online said he would pay her several million dollars for evidence of the killing, Alaska authorities say.The 18-year-old from Anchorage, Alaska, had developed an online relationship with Darin Schilmiller, 21, of Indiana, who posed as a millionaire named "Tyler," and offered her at least million to kill Cynthia Hoffman and send him "videos and photographs of the murder," according to the Alaska Department of Law.The two began discussing "a plan to rape and murder someone in Alaska," several weeks before Hoffman's murder, according to court documents.Hoffman, 19, and Brehmer are described in the documents as "best friends."Hoffman was bound with duct tape, shot in the back of the head, and pushed into a river near a hiking trail outside Anchorage on June 2, the department said in a statement.Anchorage Police officers discovered her body along the Eklutna River bank on June 4.Brehmer recruited Kayden McIntosh, 16, Caleb Leyland, 19, and two juveniles to help her carry out the killing, and in exchange, "all of them would receive a significant sum of money for their part in the planning and/or execution of the murder," according to the department's statement.CNN has reached out to Brehmer's attorney, Emily Cooper, but a request for comment has not been answered.Federal officials are in the process of seeing Schilmiller transferred to Anchorage, US Department of Justice spokeswoman Chloe Martin said. DETROIT — A Michigan mother claims her 15-year-old daughter was booted from a Spirit Airlines flight from Tampa to Detroit without notice.Now, she's taking action and suing the airline.The alleged incident happened in April 2018 when the family was returning from Ft. Lauderdale and had to switch planes in Tampa.Stacy Giordano had a seat with her son in the back of the plane, and her daughter was reportedly assigned to a seat in the front of the aircraft. That's when Giordano's attorney Jerry Thurswell claims Giordano's daughter was suddenly removed from the plane to make room for another passenger due to overbooking.“They didn’t want to hear anything. They just pulled her off the plane," Thurswell said.Thurswell said the teenager attempted to reach her mother by phone, but was unable to do so because of the airline's mandatory "airplane mode" policy on cell phones. Giordano's phone was not receiving messages. The girl was put on another flight back to Detroit hours later. Giordano didn't realize her daughter was gone until mid-flight.“You don’t just separate a child from their mother," Thurswell said.“The safety and security of our Guests is our top priority,” Spirit Airlines said in a statement.Thurswell said the airline refunded Giordano a ticket and offered her extra flight miles.The family is suing for more than ,000 in damages. 1369
