ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man died after falling off a cliff in Escondido Thursday afternoon. Emergency crews were called to the 16000 block of Highland Valley Road late Thursday afternoon after reports of the man dangling more than 50 feet off the side of a cliff. The man was identified Friday as 75-year-old John David Bittner of Julian.Cal Fire says Bittner was working to replace batteries on wildlife cameras when the accident occurred. He was with a friend rappelling down a cliff in Brady Canyon with suffered a fall and yelled for help to his friend.RELATED: Local ill woman among those claiming they were misled by hydrogen water companyCrews were able to recover Bittner using a helicopter, but he enterted cardiopulmonary arrest and died at the scene, Cal Fire and the county Medical Examiner said.CalFire attempted to rescue a climber in remote Escondido who was replacing batteries on wildlife cameras. FALLBROOK (KGTV) - One person is dead after she was hit by a vehicle while walking along the shoulder of a road in Fallbrook with her husband.CHP officers say the 60-year-old woman was walking with her husband just after 5 p.m. northbound on the east shoulder in the 2700 block of Gird Road north of Laketree Drive. An approaching pickup truck heading northbound left the roadway and struck the woman. The truck stopped for a moment before fleeing the scene northbound on Gird Rd.North County Fire Protection District and CHP responded and crews began life saving measures at the scene, but the woman was pronounced dead. Her 60-year-old husband was not injured.The truck involved in the crash is described as an older model pickup truck that's dark in color. The truck will likely have damage to the right front side.Investigators were reviewing surveillance footage from the area to learn more about what happened.Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspected vehicle or information about the crash is asked to call CHP at 858-637-3800. 1060

(KGTV) - The dramatic collapse of a tree in front of an Escondido family’s home was caught on camera during a Red Flag Warning Tuesday.Mike and Selene Neumann woke up to howling winds early Tuesday morning at their home on Pico de la Loma.Selene walked out to record video and saw a 60-foot tall tree laying across the yard and the top of their 1997 BMW Z3 Roadster.The tree, an Italian Cypress, mangled the convertible top, shattered the windows, and bent the door.When the Neumanns saw the video from their Ring camera, they were “astounded”.The fallen tree had been in place since the home was built in 1979.Experts checked out other trees on the Neumann’s property and removed a similar Italian Cypress near the uprooted tree. 756

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The man accused of hitting and killing an Escondido bicyclist appeared in court Wednesday on unrelated charges. Jamison Connor, 41, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment. The charges were unrelated to the deadly hit-and-run and were instead a result of parole violations in which Connor was found with a bag of methamphetamine and a loaded gun during a traffic stop. Also in the truck at the time of the stop was Connor's young son, prosecutors say. The District Attorney's office went into detail outside the courtroom about the arrest. "During their investigation, police noted several signs and symptoms the defendant was under the effect of controlled substances and alcohol," said Assistant DA Chris Campbell. "When they took the defendant out, law enforcement searched the truck. They found a bag of meth in passenger side door and loaded 25 caliber firearm in glove compartment."After his arrest, police announced Connor as the suspect in a hit-and-run crash that killed 36-year-old Kevin Lentz. Lentz was cycling with a group along La Honda Road north of El Norte Parkway when he was hit head-on November 23. “The driver of the car was on the wrong side of the road, traveling at high speed on a blind curve when he hit Kevin head-on, killing him instantly,” wrote Devin Rickey on a GoFundMe page set up for Lentz’ family.RELATED: Friends mourn bicyclist killed in hit-and-run crashOfficers later found a dark Toyota sedan abandoned about a half-mile away from the crash on the 600 block of Aster Street. Police say the vehicle had significant damage to the windshield and roof.
