SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family and friends of a disabled Clairemont woman are making a plea for the arrest of a hit-and-run driver who left her with serious injuries.Last week, a beaming Delores Odom appeared at a surprise party for her 59th birthday. One of the attendees was her friend and neighbor Maritza Gates. "She was so happy that day. It breaks my heart to see her in the hospital now in so much pain," said Gates. On Saturday just before 6:30 p.m., Odom decided to take a walk to grab dinner. She was crossing westbound on Genesee Avenue in the south crosswalk when she was hit by a vehicle that had been going westbound on Derrick Drive and made a left turn to southbound Genesee Avenue, according to police.Odom's daughter Brianna says her mother broke her back in two places. Odom has feeling in her toes, but still faces possible paralysis and requires complicated back surgery. Her recovery and rehabilitation is made more challenging because of a decades-old diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. "There's a special place for people like that. I don't understand how you could hurt someone and then leave them. My mom is one of the nicest people ever. You don't know someone's story when you leave them to die on the street," she said.Police say there is no description of the vehicle and are looking for witnesses. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Democrat Ammar-Campa Najjar and Republican Darrell Issa have emerged as the favorites to represent East County's 50th Congressional District, according to a scientific poll released Tuesday. The 10News/Union-Tribune scientific poll comes one week before the March primary, in which voters will head to the polls for the first time since Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter resigned in January after pleading guilty to one count of felony campaign fraud. The poll, of 552 likely voters, shows Campa-Najjar, the lone household Democrat, leading the field with 35 percent of the vote. Former Congressman Issa, a Republican, comes in second with 21 percent, with former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio at 15 percent. The poll had 12 percent undecided and State Sen. Brian Jones, a Republican, at 7 percent. 837

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Despite the pandemic, Veterans Village of San Diego held its annual Stand Down event that helps hundreds of veterans facing homelessness every year.From a glance, this year’s event may seem different. Not as many people were there and stations were more spaced out than normal. But the mission remained the same, reaching out to veterans who are at risk or homeless.Darcy Pavich, the Stand Down director, says the goal is to provide Veterans with the resources they need. Whether it’s housing services, medical referrals, or employment services."It’s difficult for them right now to connect with the services because so many doors are closed," says Pavich.What is also different this year is making sure COVID-19 health guidelines are followed. From requiring masks, to hand sanitizing, and making sure everyone practiced social distancing.This took a lot more planning and preparation to make sure Veterans and Volunteers stayed safe.But even with the changes, Pavich says the simple gesture of reaching out to Veterans made a big impact on those that showed up. "It brings a smile to them and they may not have a lot to smile about right now," she said. Alifan Drive into roughly 50 apartments for the homeless. The location is near the Vons shopping plaza.“It’s just not acceptable. I’m not against homeless shelters by any means but this is not the proper location,” said Mark Bromley. He believes the site is too close to homes and schools.San Diego City Councilman Chris Cate said the developer has not yet applied for a permit to start the project. Cate told 10News he can’t give his opinion on the project in case the issue goes before the Council.Organizers shut down the planned open house after more than 200 people attended due to possible fire code violations given the size of the crowd.Another informational meeting is tentatively scheduled for next Tuesday at a larger location. 973
