IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) -- The city of Imperial Beach voted to create a committee to take a look at their contract with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and the department’s use of force policies. During a city council meeting Wednesday night, the council also passed a Black Lives Matter proclamation.The committee will be tasked with looking to see if there are any necessary changes that should or could potentially be made when it comes to spending, looking at the possibility of redirecting funds to other community services. The council agreed that this committee should also make sure the sheriff’s department can still ensure public safety.The vote also came with the condition that the city will hire a consultant to advise them and help with the review.The council agreed to come back with their findings and any recommended changes in 90 days. 877

Hurricane Sally made landfall near Gulf Shores, Alabama, Wednesday morning, bringing with it Category 2-strength winds and life-threatening storm surge.The National Hurricane Center reports that the slow-moving storm made landfall at 5:45 a.m. ET with maximum sustained wind speeds of 105 mph.In an update published less than an hour before landfall, the NHC warned that "significant flash and urban flooding" was likely into inland Alabama and central Georgia.The storm is currently projected to slowly move eastward, carving through Alabama and central Georgia before reaching South Carolina by Friday afternoon. 622

Hurricane Hunters have been flying in and out of Hurricane Laura continuously for days, getting a close-up look as the hurricane has rapidly intensified.In less than two days, Laura went from a tropical storm to a high-end Category 4. The storm is set to strike the Louisiana coast early Thursday morning.There are two Air Force Reserve groups that fly into hurricanes to send back data to the National Hurricane Center.In total, the Air Force Reserve utilizes 20 WC-130J aircraft that are equipped with palletized meteorological data-gathering instruments.According to the Hurricane Hunters, “The navigator keeps track of the aircraft's position and movement and monitors radar to avoid tornadic activity. The flight meteorologist acts as flight director and observes and records meteorological data at flight level using a computer that encodes weather data every 30 seconds. The weather reconnaissance loadmaster collects and records vertical meteorological data using a parachute-borne sensor known as a dropsonde. After being captured and detained, all 52 people are now seeking asylum. A local Youtuber who goes by the username, "Mexican Andy" live-streamed the video of the migrants rushing the border. At around 4 PM, Thursday, he witnessed a man, using what looks to be a knife to slice through the fence and razor wires. The moment it was wide enough for an adult to crawl through, the rush began. US Border Patrol agents said they now have 52 people in custody, including 23 men, 12 women, and 17 children, for illegally crossing the border. This includes 27 families, 24 single adults, and one unaccompanied child, hailing from Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala. All of them have since filed for asylum. This kind of breach is hardly a rarity for Border Patrol. Last November, just after the installation of Concertina wire on top of the border wall, two women and a child appeared to squeeze through the fence and walk into the United States.Days later, thermal cameras captured a man, attempting to kick the same razor wire at the San Diego border. Later that same month was the largest caravan rush in recent years, which shut down the San Ysidro border crossing, freeways, and surrounding businesses. With so many more incidents of asylum seekers trying to cross into the United States illegally, it is unclear if Border Patrol has any plans of adding extra security. 10News also asked if this latest group will be sent back to Mexico while their asylum claims are processed, as instructed by President Trump.
