There's a new push to acknowledge the greater impact of racism on health.Three Democratic lawmakers created the Anti-Racism and Public Health Act, which would create two new programs within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).One is a National Center for Anti-Racism to research health disparities and develop policies to close the divide. The other is a new program within the CDC’s Center for Injury Prevention and Control that would be focused on preventing law enforcement violence.The bill also calls on the federal government to declare racism a public health crisis. Meanwhile, many state and local governments have already done that.The American Public Health Association says federal action would identify racism as an issue of national importance.“I think the goal is to get us to take our heads of the sand and not be afraid to call racism for what it is,” said Dr. Georges Benjamin, Executive Director at the American Public Health Association.Benjamin says the pandemic has shown the extent of racism as a health issue, pointing to matters that prevent people of color from getting tested and the apprehension Black men face when it comes to putting on a mask, because it can be seen as threatening.He says the stress can raise blood pressure and cause health issues.“If you actually go in and understand their life experiences, they have higher degrees of stress,” said Benjamin. “Stress, it changes a whole range of bodily hormones that have negative impacts on the body.”The American Public Health Association declared systemic racism a public health crisis in June, shortly after George Floyd’s death.A U.S. Senate version of the bill has been referred to committee. 1708

TIJUANA, Mexico (KGTV) — Health conditions continue deteriorating Friday in Tijuana where thousands of migrants are camping, contributing to the opening of a second shelter 45 minutes away.The new shelter in an area known as El Barretal has a roof, dry floor and can house 3,000 migrants, Rodolfo Olimpo, a representative from Baja California State's Special Committee on Migration Issues said. Friday, about a thousand were shuttled by bus to the new shelter. There are no lighting fixtures, but migrants are using portable lights as well as flashlights.In the first shelter, the floor is mud, puddles everywhere and the entire area is littered with junk. One man brushed his teeth over a muddy puddle.10News Reporter Laura Acevedo went to Tijuana Thursday and spoke with the migrants living in squalor. One woman from Honduras, Leida Reyes, told her she thinks this is better than what they lived with back home.She said she couldn't walk around freely without fear, her children never attended school because it was too dangerous.When asked about the President's hard stance on migrants, she said she thinks he'll have a change of heart when he understands they're coming from a country that they can no longer live in safely.Reyes has been in TJ for about 20 days and is waiting for her number to be called so her case for asylum can be processed.No one has stated how long either shelter will be in place. 1418

Top senators eager to target Saudi Arabia over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi?plan to meet Thursday to try to cut a bipartisan deal curtailing US involvement in the war in Yemen, suspend arms sales with the Saudi kingdom and rebuke the crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman.The goal of the senators is to reach bipartisan consensus on a deal that could be on the floor as soon as Monday, according to members involved in the effort."There's a consensus among a lot of us that we want to suspend arms sales and stop support for the war -- how do you best do that?" said Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican who is directly involved in the effort.Asked if he's spoken to the White House about the push, Graham said bluntly: "They know where I'm at.""It'll have teeth," said Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker, a Tennessee Republican, who added that the senators are trying to piece together various proposals into one plan to achieve bipartisan consensus. "We're trying to get everything together so we do something constructive."The move would amount to a rebuke not just to Saudi Arabia -- but also to Trump, who has downplayed the murder of Khashoggi and cast doubt on the crown prince's role?in the murder while also promoting economic ties of the US and Saudi Arabia. Among the ideas: Formally halt arms sales between the kingdom and the US, a top Trump priority, while also limiting the US involvement in the Saudi-led war in Yemen, which the Trump administration supports. Because of the unusual process, bringing up the Sanders-Lee-Murphy measure -- without a bipartisan deal to consider amendments -- could open up the floor to a session known as a "vote-a-rama" that could open up the bill to a wide-range of unrelated issues."The conundrum is if we get on it without an agreement on amendments then we've got a vote-a-rama," said Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, a Texas Republican. "And so there's no germaneness requirement, so everything from criminal justice reform to repeal-and-replace Obamacare to Medicare-for-all are all fair game. According to WCPO television station in Cincinnati, video shows another passenger aiding the woman throughout the entire flight.The passenger in the video is being hailed as a hero as he helped keep the other passengers calm during the incident, which lasted for more than two hours.Republic Airlines operating as United issued a statement saying the passenger was transported to the hospital once the flight landed, and those offering her care in the air were assisted by an on-call medical service crew members.United has not been without its share of headlines this year. In May 2018, a lawsuit was filed on behalf of a Nigerian woman who was kicked off a flight from Houston to San Francisco after a white man complained she was "pungent." THORNTON, Colo. – Police in Wyoming have arrested a Thornton, Colo. man after he walked into their station and told them he had killed his girlfriend in Colorado and driven her body across state lines to Wyoming.Thornton police said Jonathan Eugene Akin, 22, was in custody of the Powell (Wyo.) Police Department after being arrested for investigation on a first-degree murder charge on Tuesday. Jail records indicate he also faces a felony charge of mutilation of a dead body.Thornton police say they were called by Powell police just before noon Tuesday and asked to conduct a welfare check on a woman at an apartment at the Champion’s Park Apartments. Powell police told Thornton police that Akin had come into their department claiming his dead girlfriend was in his vehicle.While Thornton officers were checking the apartment, Powell police confirmed the woman’s body was found inside Akin’s vehicle. Thornton police confirmed the apartment was a crime scene, Sgt. Ernie Lucero said in a news release.Akin is being held at the Park County (Wyo.) Sheriff’s Office while he awaits a hearing to be extradited back to Colorado to face charges.
