BARNEGAT LIGHTHOUSE STATE PARK, N.J. — A dead whale is sitting on a New Jersey state park beach after a Christmas storm blew through the northeast.The humpback whale is near Barnegat Lighthouse State Park in Ocean County. It is unclear at this time how the roughly 20-foot-long whale died, according to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, a marine animal focused organization that responded to the whale Saturday. They said it could have been hit by a boat or something else during the storm, or died from contracting a disease. In addition to coming ashore on a holiday weekend, when few state employees are working, the below-freezing temperatures are also delaying the whale’s removal.“The whale’s too frozen,” Bob Schoelkopf, the director of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center said. “We can’t even cut into the blubber, it’s too thick and frozen.”Schoelkopf believes the dead whale was washed ashore on Christmas Eve, then taken back out to sea on Christmas as a large storm came through, and then came back ashore Saturday.Anyone visiting the area should stay clear, Schoelkopf said, because of the possibility for diseases to be in the carcass.Whale watching boats had spotted the whale alive earlier this year in Sandy Hook bay, where it had been photographed feeding, Schoelkopf said.In September, a different humpback whale was found dead off the Jersey Shore after being entangled. "They say that their belongings mean nothing without their lives."Back in October, ICE officials announced they were releasing an increased number of families amid a surge of them showing up at the border and a limit to how long they can detain families. "You hear the stories; you hear the pain," Campos said. An unknown number of Phoenix-area churches are temporarily taking in the families upon their release from ICE as they work to connect with other relatives across the country. The families are equipped with ankle monitors and still have to go through the immigration court process.Statistics show the number of "family units" that are apprehended along the Southwest border has surged in recent months. Campos says he reached out to ICE to offer up his church to help with this process. He says he is surprised by how many people have shown up in buses, estimating more than 800 people have come through his church since early October, with the most recent group of people arriving this past Thursday. Campos said nearly everyone from that group has since left the church. "We have to be strong, not to fall in love with them so much that it hurts you when they leave," Campos said. Campos said donations, including clothes and bottled water, are welcome.  1692

BANNING, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a malfunctioning diesel vehicle sparked the first big Southern California wildfire of the year, which has forced thousands of people from their homes east of Los Angeles. State fire officials say the vehicle's exhaust system spewed burning carbon Friday in Cherry Valley in Riverside County, although it hasn't been found. The blaze is raging for a fourth day and has burned one home. It's one of several burning around the state amid sweltering temperatures. Evacuations were ordered for a blaze in Colusa County in Northern California. Another fire in San Luis Obispo County is 60% contained. 641
