SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Association of Governments and Caltrans will begin three nights of overnight closures of northbound Interstate 5 Tuesday night after completing overnight work along southbound I-5 ahead of schedule. Work crews will close northbound I-5 from state Route 52 to Genesee Avenue from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night though Thursday, according to SANDAG. The closures are necessary to remove wooden structures that supported the recently completed construction of a trolley overpass at Voigt Drive Neither agency expected to begin closures of northbound I-5 until later this month or early July due to similar work on a trolley overpass spanning southbound I-5 at Nobel Drive, which began June 9. Those closures were expected to last until June 28 but concluded early last Tuesday morning. SANDAG expects to conduct additional closures of northbound I-5 June 23-27. The closures are part of the .17 billion Mid-Coast Trolley Blue Line Extension, which includes a planned 11-mile extension of trolley service by San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System from Santa Fe Depot in downtown San Diego to University City. The extension will add trolley stops in Mission Bay Park, UC San Diego and Westfield UTC. SANDAG is receiving .04 billion in funding from the Federal Transit Administration to complete the project. The extension and related projects are intended to reduce traffic congestion as the county's population increases. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council received a handful of presentations Tuesday intended to help the city address homelessness as well as the lack of transitional and permanent affordable housing.Entities presenting to the council included the Regional Task Force on the Homeless, San Diego County, Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office, the San Diego Housing Commission, San Diego State University's Institute for Public Health and the council's Select Committee on Homelessness.Representatives from each office discussed challenges and successes fighting homelessness in San Diego last year. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The driver of a minivan was sought this morning for leaving the scene of a Middletown hit-and-run that left a 66-year-old bicyclist hospitalized with a life-threatening head injury, police said.The victim was riding near the intersection of India and West Washington streets at 1:30 p.m. Friday when he was struck by a blue or gray 2005 Dodge Caravan, Georgia license number RRJ7004. The vehicle may have a shattered windshield or front-end damage, according to San Diego police.Following the collision, the driver of the minivan fled, possibly back toward Interstate 5, police said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - SeaWorld San Diego announced Friday that it reached a milestone in the construction of its ``dive'' roller coaster by installing the ride's highest section of track 153 feet above ground. The ``topping-out'' ceremony included a crane placing an American flag at the ride's highest section. The ride, slated to open next summer, is being built adjacent to the Journey to Atlantis attraction, on what had previously been a parking lot. Construction on the ride, advertised as the tallest, fastest and longest such coaster in the state, began in August. The park originally announced the ride in January with the name ``Mako'' after the endangered shark species, which is considered the fastest shark in the world. Park officials announced its new name, Emperor, last month, saying it would reflect the ability of emperor penguins to dive to depths of 1,800 feet in the waters of their native Antarctica. After the 153-foot climb, Emperor will plunge back down 143 feet while reaching speeds of more than 60 mph, according to SeaWorld. The ride will include nearly 2,500 feet of track, ``floorless'' cars that will hold 18 riders in three six-person rows and penguin conservation and awareness elements through a partnership with Penguins International. The ride is being built by Swiss roller coaster manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard Consulting Engineers. The company has built four other roller coasters for SeaWorld since 1997, one in San Antonio and the other three at SeaWorld Orlando. 1518

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County schools are allowed to reopen for in-person teaching starting Tuesday, a day after a flurry of businesses throughout the county resumed indoor operations.Tuesday marks two weeks since San Diego County was removed from the state's COVID-19 watch list and nearly three weeks that the county's case rate has remained under 100 cases per 100,000 people.Remaining below that metric has paved the way for K-12 schools to reopen for in-person teaching, but many districts are expected to take a cautious approach to reopening.Schools that choose to reopen must follow state guidance, including mandatory face covering usage for students in third grade through high school, increased cleaning and disinfecting practices and implementing a six-foot distance requirement, where possible, in classrooms and non-classroom spaces.On Monday, San Diego County businesses including movie theaters, gyms, museums and hair and nail salons resumed indoor operations, with modifications, under newly issued state guidance. Restaurants, places of worship and movie theaters are only allowed up to 25% occupancy or 100 people -- whichever is less. Museums, zoos and aquariums are also required not to exceed 25% occupancy.Monday night, the county implemented a new policy that restaurant patrons sitting indoors must wear masks at all times, except when eating or drinking. Outdoor patrons may still remove masks while not consuming food or beverages.Gyms, dance studios, yoga studios and fitness centers may operate with 10% occupancy. Hair salons, barbershops, tattoo parlors, piercing shops, skin care and cosmetology services and nail salons may operate indoors with normal capacity, but a new policy states they must keep an appointment book with names and contact information for customers to track potential future outbreaks.San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox thanked San Diegans for working hard to bring the case rate down but offered a word of caution on Monday."This is not a green light, this is a yellow light," he said.
