More transgender and gender-nonconforming people have been killed this year than any other year prior since data has been tracked.According to the Human Rights Campaign, which has been tracking the deaths since 2013, at least 33 trans or gender non-conforming people have been killed in the United States in 2020.“There’s a loud minority of folks who feel it is their place to punish people who have different beliefs than they do,” said Tori Cooper, a transgender woman herself who works with the HRC. “It is difficult to sometimes articulate how each death feels, like a little part of your spirit is being taken away.”Cooper says as LGBTQ issues get more exposure, more risk is taken on by the community. She also says each year the reporting gets more accurate, which could be why the trend has gone the way it has.“There [are] so many things that you find in common; so many commonalities with these people who have been murdered that it feels each time a little closer to home,” said Cooper.For Cooper, that feeling was never more pronounced than after 33-year old Felycya Harris, another trans woman, was killed on October 8 by a man she was in a romantic relationship with. Both live in Georgia, and both can identify with the fact that most of these deaths have come at the hands of those closest to the victim.“When someone says something under their breath you have to think to yourself is this person going to kill me,” said Cooper. “That may sound, to folks outside the community, hyperbolic, but the truth is it isn’t.”Cooper says the way forward is in education, empathy, and working through any discomfort about transgender issues that may be different than our own.“If folks who in our same social circles are killing us, then if we can’t trust people who we know then who is it that we can trust,” said Cooper.She says only then can we work towards reversing a trend that has Cooper and others apprehensive about something inherent to all of us: connection.“Provide folks with the love, support, and encouragement that we, as trans people, need because that provides a modicum of safety,” she said. 2124

NASHVILLE, Tennessee — Sometimes people suffering with opioid addiction turn to others for help. But sadly professionals listening may need help of their own. After a local addiction treatment consultant died from an overdose, people in his community are asking others who are battling the disease to come forward.Jeremiah Jackson died on Nov. 10. He worked as a treatment consultant at American Addiction Centers in Brentwood helping others with their addictions. People who knew him said he was loved, and called his death a shock. Chris Boutte said Jackson was dedicated to his work."I know that was helping him so much, when we get to help others that helps us so much," Boutte said.  The two first met when Boutte became an Alumni Coordinator and consultant. "We just met and he helped me out with a lot of early struggles. Just dealing with clients who had relapsed and calling me and needing help and people passing away," he said.Boutte spoke to Jackson last month and was surprised to hear of his passing."Jeremiah was just a great example like he is somebody I needed in my life and he was also laughing and joking around and he would freestyle rap and like sing and break dance. He could just...everybody loved the dude," he said.Jackson had been clean for more than four years and shared his heroin addiction story with WTVF TV station in Nashville in December 2017. While working at AAC, Jackson attended a separate recovery program. He was clean for more than four years but last weekend he died from an overdose.Cindy Spelta has worked at Cumberland Heights helping others with their drug and alcohol addictions for more than 15 years. She said people in her field may sometimes need even more help than those they are treating.She said she has been sober from cocaine usage and alcohol for 17 years and also participates in a recovery program. Spelta said Jackson's passing is devastating and is possibly an example of what professionals call "compassion fatigue." "You're dealing with people whose lives have been destroyed and whose families' lives have been destroyed and all that is coming at you every day," she said. She also said each day the tolerance level for people in recovery drops while the chances of a fatal relapse go up. EDEN, the Bronx — Police arrested three people Thursday in connection with the shooting death of a dad gunned down as he crossed a Bronx street with his daughter.Davon Delks, 21, Laquan Heyward, 25 and Devon Vines, 27, were all arrested on murder charges.Anthony Robinson, 29, was holding his 6-year-old daughter's hand when he was fatally shot on July 6.
