DENVER -- The administration of a Denver charter school has been suspended after disturbing video of a playground fight went public. Now, Denver police are investigating the teacher who appears to encourage the girls to throw punches. The April 20 video shows a group of girls at Wyatt Academy in an argument that escalated quickly. The restorative justice officer in the video appears to be smiling and laughing and can be heard at one point in the video saying, "Is anyone, like, going to hit anyone or is this just going to be a…"To which, a child yelled, "people are going to start hitting," before the violence escalated.Community activists said the real story isn't the fight, but the fact that three little girls received Denver Police citations for public fighting, while the school took no action against the teacher for a month — until the video went public."This whole time this is escalating, he never calls for anybody," said H Soul Ashemu, with Our Voice Our Schools, which released the video to try to initiate action from the school or the Denver Public School District.Denver Public School released a statement Friday afternoon saying it is investigating and that they are "deeply troubled by the video." 1248

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) — Shine your ruby red slippers and prepare for a walk down the yellow brick road to Emerald City — well, Del Mar.The San Diego County Fair's 2019 theme of "Oz-some" will encompass the iconic books and films surrounding L. Frank Baum's classic "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.""The Fair's theme is quite special to San Diegans, because Oz author L. Frank Baum is thought to have found inspiration for at least 3 of his 14 Oz books during his extended stays in Coronado," Katie Mueller, deputy general manager of fair time operations, said. "Though most people know Oz only through the famous movie, the Fair has chosen to bring the books to life, including a few differences that will be a surprise to most. For instance, Dorothy's famous slippers are silver, not ruby."SAN DIEGO FAIR 2018: BY THE NUMBERSThe fair will run from May 31, 2019, to July 4, 2019, and be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays in June.Fair officials say San Diegans will get to journey to Emerald City and enjoy education exhibits, wicked carnival rides, and more fair fun they've come to know and love. The Toyota Summer Concert Series will also return with 27 nights of entertainment already announced for the fair's Corona Grandstand Stage. Justin Moore, Jim Gaffigan, Mariachi Sol de Mexico, truTV's Impractical Jokers, Smokey Robinson, Grupo Intocable, and Brad Upton are slated to take the stage.Season passes are now on sale for and passport books are also available for before the fair kicks off. More ticketing information can be found on the fair's website here. 1594

DENVER – Colorado has joined a lawsuit involving 18 states, several cities and counties and the U.S. Conference of Mayors aiming to block the Trump administration from putting a citizenship question on the 2020 U.S. Census. But the state is doing so without the representation of its attorney general’s office and will have the governor’s chief legal counsel, Jacqueline Cooper Melmed, represent the state in the proceedings.Gov. John Hickenlooper’s office signed on to the first amended complaint in the lawsuit on Monday. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and a host of other states originally filed the lawsuit last month in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.Hickenlooper, a Democrat, broke with Colorado Attorney General Cynthia Coffman, a Republican, in filing the suit.Coffman in early April announced that she and the attorneys general for Oklahoma and Louisiana supported the new citizenship question, saying that U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross was “within his authority to find that the need for accurate citizenship information outweighed the fears of a lower response rate.”But in joining the suit, the governor’s office argued otherwise.“We have a responsibility to Colorado to see that every person is counted,” Hickenlooper said in a statement. “Our action seeks to ensure the census is being used for its intended purpose under the Constitution. An accurate census count protects federal funding and our representation in Congress.”Annie Skinner, the spokesperson for the attorney general's office, outlined the differences in opinion between Hickenlooper and Coffman and explained the process by which Colorado joined the lawsuit: 1699

DENVER, Colorado — A gunman did not go to Arapahoe High School "this past Friday" with the intention of killing people.According to a post that's been circulating on Facbook for awhile, the shooter was "the only one dead" after an "armed school resource officer confronted him." That post has been recirculating following a deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida on Feb. 14, 2018, which has spurred a bigger national conversation about arming teachers and about gun control. There was not a school shooting incident in Arapahoe recently, nor on Dec. 11, 2015. There was a shooting at the school Dec. 13, 2013 in which a shooter, an 18-year-old senior and debate club member, did shoot another student, who died several days later. The gunman also attempted to start a fire in the school and eventually shot himself in the head.According to fact-checker website Snopes.com, a school custodian saw the shooter and alerted security personnel. Those security professionals were joined by a deputy, but none shot the gunman. They did help minimize casualties by directing civilians at the scene and racing to confront the shooter.CNN reports the entire incident was over in 80 seconds. DALLAS, Ga. — A Georgia high school plans to start the week with all classes shifting online after nine students and staff tested positive for the coronavirus as the school year opened with in-person classes last week.News outlets report all students at North Paulding High School west of Atlanta will take online classes Monday and Tuesday.Paulding County Schools Superintendent Brian Ott sent a letter to parents Sunday saying those two days will be used to clean and disinfect the school.Ott disclosed Saturday that six students and three staff had tested positive for the virus. The school made headlines last week with photos posted to social media that showed hallways crowded with students who weren't wearing masks.Hannah Watters, a student who posted photos of the school’s crowded halls, was suspended for her actions, but the punishment was later lifted.Since posting the photos and making headlines, Watters says she has received threats. The sophomore told CNN that she and her loved ones have been sent screenshots of group chats with threatening language against her.Watters believes much of the school’s staff supports her actions, but some of her fellow students don’t."I feel like a lot of teachers have my back because they know how dangerous it is going to school,” she told CNN. “But I know that a lot of the kids I go to school with, I've already gotten backlash for it. I've gotten threats and things like that, but I know that I'm doing the right thing and I, and it's not going to stop me from continuing doing it, but it is concerning, especially since it's a lot of the people I go to school with, people I've known for years now, that are threatening me now." 1694
